Thinking about Amy and how she spent her 4th driving to get Whitaker. You're telling me NONE of her friends invited her out?? NONE of her friends offered to help her watch Theo?? Dude, if my friend had recently lost their spouse, there is no way in hell I'm not inviting them out or kicking it back with them for a party holiday. Dennis having a husband that died of cancer before season one makes far too much sense. The fuggly hair cut is growing back from the solidarity shave to match his husband, he’s broke not only due to medschool but also the medical bills, his husband had been the main breadwinner so when he became terminal and then died dennis could keep up with their house payments. He had gotten his theology degree, but watching his husband’s sickness continue to worsen his belief in godd wanned. And he turned all that devotion towards the people that were trying their damnedest to save the love of his life and decided to pivote careers.

After watching Amy drop Dennis off at work. Jack tries to say something about developing a relationship with the greiving widow of a patient wasn’t healthy for either of them, dennis kind of snaps a bit, because no matter how many times he keeps saying they’re just friends and he likes the farm no one is actually listening to him.

“Didn’t you get lonely after the love of your life died? I know I fucking did.” (and for drama lets say this is also the anniversary of his husband’s death) and Dennis starts crying… not loud or even dramatic, but in the way that its clear he still thinks he’s got a stiff upper lip and is saving face until he feels the first tear drop from his chin.

Jack practically abducts dennis from work and both widowers have a very sad, but also cathartic day of being able to talk to someone that understands. They start a Widor club and Amy is inducted into it pretty soon and they each help the other when no one else really understands. Jack finds himself as some kind of Widower-Elder making sure these two kids don’t drown in their grief at their more recent losses.

Mm imagine Dennis on call with his folks. His mom is going on and on about how she saw this obscene album cover today. She rants about how it proves that rock music is sinful. In her retelling she can barely describe the album but Dennis knows exactly what she’s talking about from the little details she gives.

He supports her with fake "yeah" and "uh-huh"’s knowing damn well he's the sinner on the cover. He's the secret face of such suggestive art and the inspiration behind the lewd lyrics.

One thing I think about a lot is classifying Robby's outbursts as a potential symptom of his PTSD. I see a lot of posts about how Robby's outbursts throughout season two are indications of him holding intentional bias against his coworkers. Most notably, his outburst at Dr. Mohan. While mean, I don't believe these outbursts occur out of hatred or dislike for those around him. I believe them to be a potential symptom of PTSD.

Robby's PTSD is in the forefront of season two. Debatably, it's the central issue of the season. The first scene is him purposefully engaging in reckless behavior by not wearing a helmet. The show repeatedly brings up this reckless behavior up by giving us dialogue about his sabbatical and motorcycle. The camera returns to his motorcycle throughout the season. Multiple characters blatantly describe his recent behavior as reckless. I don't think it's far-fetched to imply that this increase in reckless behavior is a reaction to prolonged and repetitive exposure to the ER. Every day that he goes into work, Robby is being exposed to the scene where his trauma occurred. In his discussion with Abbot at the end of the season he admits how repeated exposure to death has impacted him. He communicates that repeated exposure to the ER and death in general has decreased his ability to function both at home and work.

In comparison to season one, Robby's negative views about himself and the world around him have increased. When Dana is the recipient of his outbursts, he shares negative views about the capability of himself and others.

All to say, we're frequently shown that Robby's PTSD has become detrimental to his occupational functioning. I believe his outbursts of anger are intended to communicate the same message as his reckless behavior. Robby doesn’t hate any of his coworkers and he certainly isn’t intending to bully/target anybody. Result doesn't equal intention. Robby is lashing out at the people around him because his mental wellbeing has severely decreased. He isn’t just stressed out. There is more to PTSD than flashbacks. It isn't convenient. It isn't pretty. It isn’t kind. When analyzing Robby’s behavior, I think his PTSD gives a lot of context to his actions.

This is a little outside my usual but imagine Robby letting Dennis plan a week long vacation. Dennis is so enthusiastic about taking Robby to see his favorite spots in Nebraska. He shows off his ideas to Robby with a big smile and Robby doesn’t know how to tell him that it’s all a little too much for his body. Everything, aside from restaurants and fishing, are outdoor activities that require some moderate form of exercise.

"Baby, how old do you think I am?" Robby jokes, hoping that a light hearted approach won’t hurt Dennis' feelings. Dennis tilts his head and gives him a perplexed glare. It takes a few seconds to click but when it does Dennis' eyes go wide and he doesn’t say anything in return.

Immediately, Robby begins to internally panic.

"Baby, I’m sorry. I want to do these things with you, I promise. I just need a break sprinkled in here somewhere." He rushes to explain his perspective.

Dennis only continues to stare. He doesn’t know what to do in this situation. Dennis is desperately hoping that Robby’s eyes don’t leave his face. Hesitantly, he grabs the list of activities back and nods. "Okay." Dennis whispers lowly.

As Dennis walks away, Robby thinks he's completely fucked up. He thinks he's hurt Dennis' feelings. Dennis, however, is relieved that Robby didn’t see how hard that original comment made him.

Can’t stop thinking about DogHybrid!Dennis who herds and guards Robby at night. He doesn’t even realize he's doing it. 10pm sharp he's following the man around the house until Robby goes to bed. He'll start making comments about the time. Sometimes he'll just give Robby an exhausted stare. If Robby is on the couch he'll start bringing Robby blankets and pillows. He refuses to sleep until Robby is settled. Dennis will stare at the door for an hour before he's finally able to join Robby in sleep.
