Ok but what if Olruggio never confess to Qifrey because he thinks they are already dating since they exchanged tessels. He is living his best life having a beautiful house with his beautiful partner who cooks for him every day and together they' raising four adorable girls.

Qifrey (post deforestation): I have something to confess you. I have feelings for you

Olruggio: what

Qifrey: I know, it must be unexpected. I have been keeping this secret from you for so long because I could'n tell you

Olruggio: I can't believe it

Qifrey: I understand if you don't feel the same way

Olruggio: Are you telling me...

Olruggiio: THAT WE WERE NEVER DATING?

I can't say he knows for sure exactly what this choice meant, but considering that Iguin seems to know Qifrey to some degree and chose to use water in particular is FUCKED

Yeah I don't think I'll ever get over this POV shift:

How once Coco is starting to figure out about the silverwood, Qifrey suddenly looks so young and small in her eyes. Like compare the above panel to this one from what I would say is a more neutral POV just 2 pages earlier:

This is more how we're used to seeing him, even in moments of distress. But seen though Coco's eyes after she comes out of the Healing Spire, Qifrey looks so soft and sad and young. Without his hat and his glasses and his liar's smile he just looks like a hurt child again.

In a lot of these panels the perspective is from a high angle, slightly above him, and we get these super intimate close-ups of face, eye and hands, where it feels like we are looking at him through Coco's eyes much more as an equal than as a teacher and mentor to look up to.

And of course, there's The Big One:

We've seen this subtle POV effect before. Qifrey in the hospital bed in the Great Hall--both injured and suddenly back in his childhood home--looks very young. And of course there's that panel in chapter 40 of Olruggio holding out his hand, and I think some more subtle effects in that scene where it seems like Qifrey is remembering the younger version of him.

But in this scene it's not about invoking the memory of a character's younger self; Coco never knew Qifrey as a child. It's about the role reversal. It's the shock of realizing a trusted adult is just a person with pain and vulnerabilities like you, and they might not have any more answers about the world than you do.

Thinking Orufrey thoughts and I'm just like. you know how Olruggio was called "Ghodrey's shining star" because he was a witch prodigy. And everyone was glazing over him and how well he does magic and stuff.

And when he only saved two people in Nauz, it didn't look like anyone actually realized that what hurt him was that he couldn't save more people. When the village chief brought him to the Great Hall, he told Olruggio that he had "nothing to worry about" as if it was the beasts themselves that was the problem. And then kids at the Great Hall were more interested in hearing about what the outside world is like than actually getting to know him.

Like, it didn't look like people actually recognized him for anything that was him.

And then came one Qifrey. Olruggio saved him from drowning, Qifrey pulled away, Olruggio learned about his missing eye and went like "Okay you stupid idiot prepare to be cared for!"

And well, knowing Qifrey at this point, it took a while, but he eventually acknowledged that. He didn't care about Olruggio's accomplishments. He didn't care about where he's from and what he's done. He just cared that he's a good kid.

Like when everyone else went like "You are so good at this and that!" Qifrey just said "You are good." To Qifrey he's not a "shining star" because of his accomplishments and talents. He's the most kind and radiant one simply because of what he chooses to be.

if we get a current day olufrey hug that mirrors this one but qifrey can actually hug him back this time it's gonna be over for me. I'll never be able to recover
