love when I'm watching Leverage and I can tell it's gonna be a Working Class Solidarity Eliot episode immediately. like oh?? we're in the field of a vineyard in the cold open? a worker just collapsed and the conditions are shitty?? Eliot is gonna be working that field within the next 2 scenes, I know it. and you know what? he was.
Leverage is not a "drama" or a "crime show." Its genre is actually "Columbo-like," wherein every episode a rich asshole that you already know Did It gets not just caught but absolutely lit the fuck up by our hero(es) at the end of it
Ever think about how Eliot is known - widely known, globally known - for violence? That he's killed and maimed countless people, sometimes with his bare hands? That hardened criminals, assassins, hear his name and are afraid? Ever think about how it must feel to have someone like Parker, who is fully aware of his past and everything he's capable of, get in his space and physically tease him and put stupid hats on his head like he's her own giant dress-up doll, with zero fear, zero hesitation? To be on the receiving end of that bone-deep trust, where it never even seems to occur to her that poking the beast could be dangerous?
I think about it a lot.
#i also think about the way Eliot yells at Parker and Hardison sometimes#because! he's so controlled! so soft-spoken! with everyone#because he knows he IS scary and dangerous. he keeps his demeanor so mild to put people at ease#but when Parker and Hardison get under his skin he shouts at them and shows his irritation#as if HE is trusting THEM to know that his anger will never ever come with violence. that he is never a threat to them.#he can let his guard down. he can be human. and cranky. and imperfect. he can be teased like a regular person.#i just wonder how it feels. to be seen as lovable and funny and playful and safe.#to be seen as a man after so many years of only being a weapon. Look, I have nothing against my older gifs still gaining notes - I honestly love it! BUT, this was my second ever leverage gif, and lets just say that it's just not up to par when compared to my current stuff. So, here you all are, a new improved version of this gif!
I love that Leverage really goes out of it’s way to show us that just because you break the ‘rules’, it doesn’t mean you’re breaking the rules. Rules and laws and society are all made up, at the end of the day, and all you really have is your own moral compass and sense of justice; is this just to you? Is it right? Should it be OK for companies to put people in insurmountable debt for the rest of their lives just because our medical care is so expensive in this modern day and age? No law or rule should change what you know in your heart is right and wrong, and I think that’s the key thing that makes someone a good person in my eyes.

Leverage hands down has the best character development I’ve ever seen.
This scene hit me like a brick. My parents were hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt when I was 16 bc I’d had cancer the year before (my treatment ended up being free but the initial ER bills and such were not).
But somewhere along the line they just… Disappeared. My mom says they’re not being paid and they’re not in collections. It’s almost as if someone out there did…exactly what Parker did.
Ever since I saw this the first time, I’ve imagined it was Parker doing it. That she and Hardison had a free weekend and decided to take it out on a collections agency. That I was one of the lucky ones who got a little Leverage.
Okay but like yeah, that is actually a thing that happens, albeit not exactly like this. I don’t remember the exact process but basically there’s a booming industry to sell peoples debt - the business you owe money to sells it to someone else for a fraction of the money owed, wipes their hands of the whole affair, and now whoever bought your debt is riding your ass to get you to give the money to the. But it’s also entirely possible for people to just… buy up massive amounts of debt for pennies on the dollar, and then just. Forgive it. Because capitalism is a living nightmare, but the system is broken enough that it’s possible to exploit it for good sometimes.
Like, the main reason I know about this is because John Oliver did a piece on debt buying a few years ago, and ended it by revealing that he’d bought 15 million dollars worth of medical debt just so he could forgive all of it. Both to expose how broken the system was because some random fucker like him could buy millions of dollars in peoples debt with zero regulations, and also just to take the record for biggest TV giveaway in history.

I've seen a few posts going, "Ohhhh, Eliot Spencer used to torture/kill children when he worked for Damien Moreau. That's gotta be the 'worst thing he ever did!'"

That's a regular thing that whole crew did—something the show was willing to explicitly tell us about
Which has to make the real worst thing about 10 times more unimaginable and abhorrent
Huh, see I always read it as the show was TELLING us what he did without having him say it out loud to the crew. We hear him say there’s a specific terrible thing he did, and then practically in the next scene we’re told — but the crew is NOT — about a terrible thing he did. With that shot of the kid and her dad to drive it home. I never thought it was meant to be ambiguous, I thought that was some pretty clear storytelling.
#in my head #ive never necessarily believed that it even went as far as killing a child or physically harming one #because i think theres a level of objectivity vs subjectivity and logic vs emotions with it #and also theres a dichotomy between what you are willing to do and what the people around you can do without you walking away from them
#like i think theres a possibility that when eliot was at his worst his logic was ''yeah but im not killing children i haven't hurt a child'' #and then at some point he might be with someone else working for moreau and he might not stop that person from killing a child #and suddenly youre confronted with the reality that even if you didnt do it yourself you were complicit in it
#and in that moment he realises he COULD HAVE saved that child and he DIDNT and really he might as well had killed the kid himself #or the worst thing he did could have been killing someone in front of their child #and that could have been the moment when he started to realise the effects of his actions because how many more children did he make orphans #you know?
#i dont think the worst thing he did necessarily has to be THAT bad #i think it just had to be that bad FOR him
#personally i like the idea that the worst thing he did isnt even something he did. its something he didnt do #as in he didnt save a child #as in he didn't stop any of damiens men from doing the worst things when he could have #as in he let someone else suffer terribly because that outcome benefited him more #i think the worst thing eliot did being something he didnt do is a good reflection of who he becomes as he starts to become a better person
#because eliot wont ever stay down. he wont let something go. he will keep fighting until he physically cannot fight anymore. #i think thats best exemplified in the order 23 job and the carnival job #where eliot goes out of his way and behind the teams back to help a child who is being abused and does not let it go until he sees that the #kid will be okay. #and where eliot shows that he is very clearly willing to fight through hell itself to rescue a child in need #he gets knocked out and he gets back up and carries on fighting
