It makes me so, so angry when I see those posts that are like "HORRIFYING EARLY PLASTIC SURGERY RESULTS FROM WW2," because all of those lists are full of images that aren't the final result and are used for pure shock value. Harold Gillies, who performed most of those surgeries, was an incredibly talented surgeon. Here are some images of the full results of his surgeries.

I need to emphasize that I can't post the "before" pictures that go with these because the men did not have faces. The injuries were so extensive that these men were missing nearly all of their facial features, and through cutting-edge techniques that "looked scary" at the time (e.g. extensive skin grafts), Gillies saved these men from a medical nightmare.

Gillies performed the world's first ftm bottom surgery for trans man Michael Dillon and pioneered mtf bottom surgery! Respect his legacy.

The problem isn't fur, the problem is factory farming. That's always the problem. Buying fur and bones and shells from Indigenous folks who know how to get them correctly and respectfully is the best practise.

But you know what kind of winter coat eventually decomposes and doesn't cause pollution and doesn't contain microplastics? FUR. You know what kind of fabric stays warm even when wet? WOOL. You know what kinds of shoes last forever? LEATHER ONES.

Plastic is bad for the environment. Are you going to kill a thousand animals or one? Those are your choices at this point, there is no zero. You have to square with the idea that you cannot get the blood off your hands, and you shouldn't feel you have to. We all depend on one another, and it's possible to want an animal to have the best life it can before you kill it for food and whatever else. Domesticity is a good deal for most animals when it's done properly--they get protection from predators, free food, and medical care that they wouldn't get in the wild, and a longer life and a painless death.

Pleather is plastic. Faux fur is plastic. Vegan leather is plastic. It's all plastic and it all releases microplastics into the water supply every time you wash it. It is not 'cruelty free' that is a lie advertising is selling you. You have got to stop thinking with your disgust reaction.

Tony and I went to the utilitarian universalist church on Allen avenue in Portland last Sunday, October 9th. We had an appointment to be there. Actually I was under the impression that I had forced us upon them. When we had called the minister, Robert E. Wolf, about his advertised sermon, “Is it ok to be gay!?”, he said, when asked if he wanted our presence, that of course anyone was welcome at his church, but that he would be the speaker. After a while in our discussion he correctly perceived me to be an irate justifiably paranoid lesbian on a high horse, and he invited us to come and participate in the discussion following the sermon. “Hey! That’s all it takes with me!” From there on, it was “rapport.”

As I was saying, we went there and listened to the sermon and reading and even sang a hymn! Well, I gotta tell you, the sermon was all right! No, it’s true! It wasn’t radical, mind you, but I hadn’t expected such rational understanding of the human rights issues, certainly not with the depth and conviction with which they were presented. We buttonwore and spoke up to individual members of the congregation at the coffee-serving after the service. Some said that they were surprised that so many had come. Those who spoke with us were all polite. Nobody, however, gathered in the designated area for the discussion. I kept wondering down the hall and standing in front of the door, but nobody followed. Ah, well. It’s good to know that here and there across the face of our land, liberal people are aware their necks are in a noose, too, and that it can be - and maybe is - happening here.
