24082018 -ย One day, youโre 17 and youโre planning for someday. And then quietly, without you ever really noticing, someday is today. And then someday is yesterday. And this is your life.
For someone who claims to love books I spend a heck of a lot of time not reading them
how to win at college
this also applies to high school in a lot of ways, esp in organization and involvement
I read this book by cal newport calledย โhow to win at collegeโ in prep for my freshman year & u should definitely read it yourself because there are lots of important points i donโt cover in this post, but if you donโt want to, this is my summary of what I think were the most important points he made.ย
STUDY HARD, BUT YOUR GRADES DONโT MEAN AS MUCH AS WHAT YOU LEARN OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM. he prioritizes getting vital experiences such as
- joining a club and eventually taking responsibility in it and becoming a leader
- apply for scholarships every year (he said 10 a year)ย
- volunteer, but not for your resume. do it to learn and become a better person.ย
- get involved in research, and get involved in your major department (like go to the events and lectures, even if they arenโt mandatory)
- write outside of class regularly because writing is super important (example- submit to your school newspaper)ย
STAY ORGANIZED AND ON TOP OF YOUR SHIT
- he really really REALLY emphasizes not procrastinating and studying / starting papers well in advance of deadlines. his rules are toย
- - >start long term projects immediately after they are assigned and continue to work on them by following a reasonable schedule (he says to finish early, revise, then finish again),ย
- - > take 3 days to write shorter papers (aka you have abt 2 weeks to work on them and they range from 2-15ish pages) (aka make preparations pre writing, then write a rough draft on the first day, revise and focus your writing on the second day (make sure your arguments are very clear!), and polish your paper on the third day), and
- - >take 2 weeks to study for an exam. study in shorter blocks during the first week, like maybe an hour or so each day. over the weekend, add more hours. the few days before the test, study in 2-3 hour chunks to really cement the already familiar information.ย
- get a filing cabinet for your papers instead of just piling them on your desk and having to search for them later.ย
- have a HIGH QUALITY notebook and a folder for each class (or whatever stationery keeps you organized) and keep all your folders/notebooks/binders neat and organized.ย
- empty your inbox and organize your emailsย
- schedule your free time- aka have specific times that you choose to relax and spend with friends rather than unintentionally relaxing during work time, or worrying about work during relaxation time.ย
TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF
- you NEED sleep, you NEED healthy food, and you NEED exercise. you really shouldnโt put anything ahead of these things.ย
- NEVER pull an all nighter. if youโre studying ahead of time, this should be easy. all nighters arenโt glamorous, theyโre unproductive, really stressful, and unhealthy
- keep in touch with old friends, and remember to call your mom
- make sure to spend time with new friends and take care of them. be there for your friends.ย
- keep your room neat and make your bed!!ย
like i said, there is a lot of important stuff that I didnโt cover so i recommend reading the book how to win at college by cal newport, and take what you need to from it. good luck!!!
I ship myself with academic success and contentment
Iโm really going crazy but the preview looks pretty (?). Exam in 2 days ๐ฑ

Reasons why university and kindergarten are basically the same:
-you cry a lot
-youโre always sleepy
-you have no idea whatโs going on
Itโs sad how much of what is taught in school is useless to over 99% of the population.
There are literally math concepts taught in high school and middle school that are only used in extremely specialized fields or that are even so outdated they arenโt used anymore!
I took calculus my senior year of high school, and I really liked the way our teacher framed this on the first day of class.
He asked somebody to raise their hand and ask him when we would use calculus in our everyday life. So one student rose their hand and asked, โWhen are we going to use this in our everyday life?โ
โNEVER!!โ the teacher exclaimed. โYou will never use calculus in your normal, everyday life. In fact, very few of you will use it in your professional careers either.โ Then he paused. โSo would you like to know why should care?โ
Several us nodded.
He picked out one of the varsity football players in the class. โYou practice football a lot during the week, right Tim?โ asked the teacher.
โYeah,โ replied Tim. โAlmost every day.โ
โDo you and your teammates ever lift weights during practice?โ
โYeah. Tuesdays and Thursdays we spend a lot of practice in the weight room.โ
โBut why?โ asked the teacher. โIs there ever going to be a play your coach tells you use during a game that requires you to bench press the other team?โ
โNo, of course not.โ
โThen why lift weights?โ
โBecause it makes us stronger,โ said Tim.
โBingo!!โ said the teacher. โItโs the same thing with calculus. Youโre not here because youโre going to use calculus in your everyday life. Youโre here because calculus is weightlifting for your brain.โ
And Iโve never forgotten that.
Going back to uni for some exams! The song seemed very fitting... I hate trains but music and coffee keep me going!
