i think "[sic]" is one of the funniest things of literature. like yeah this guy really wrote it out like that
For the uninitiated, you write [sic]—literally "this" or "so" in latin—to indicate that you haven't altered the wording or spelling. While it can be used to preserve a joke misspelling (aminals) or indicate that you know it looks weird (the Toronto Maple Leafs), it is also the most biting three letters that you can throw at a motherfucker who should know better.

it’s very special to me how colopale made mizuki trans and then they narratively paired her up with ena, a certified misandrist lesbian (to me). in a way i think the mere fact that ena loves mizuki so much and she feels so comfortable around her is in and of itself a dismissal of the misreading of mizuki as a just another “otokonoko”. ena’s clear disinterest in men (see sanrio comment) and antagonism towards them (she legit very very rarely interacts with a man who isn’t her father, and we all know what their relationship is like, or her brothers, whose head she chews off 24/7) are narratively poignant for both ena’s character (her art is put down by a man who believes her weak, she objectifies herself in an attempt to achieve agency etc.) but also her relationship with mizuki. tbh we can even imagine that ena’s dislike for / disinterest in men might have also had a role in mizuki’s fear of things changing if she came out. there’s some angst potential there. but the truth is mizuki is a woman and ena sees her as such and loves her the most so jot that down
like especially when you consider that ena is inspired by the jirai kei fashion subculture and she IS a landmine girl (mentally ill, emotionally unstable, posting herself on social media etc.) it would have been soo easy to write her as interested in men (landmine girls’ struggles are often portrayed through their destructive and toxic romantic relationships with men in jaanese media). just make her drop a few comments about her noticing a hot guy. but no she fucking never talks about nor acknowledges men 😭 you only ever see her comment on how pretty girls are… she starts babbling pathetically sparkles everywhere when in front of beautiful girls… kuromi says “your brother and his friend are so hot!” and ena has no idea what she’s on about. she closed her dm’s on her selfie account to avoid (mostly) men interacting with her. she pushed her father in a river and has hated his guts for a long time and she finds her little brother annoying and they always fight and she never speaks to other male characters unless necessary. she has no male friends. her whole narrative is about being a woman in the arts and being put down by men and fighting back against the idea that she should only be a passive recipient of art (in her selfies) instead than an active creator of it (by painting). idk they could have easily given he some male friends or made her struggles less dependent on her fighting back against the misogyny perpetrated even by the men close to you (her father) so like. that’s a choice. and how beautiful is it that her best friend is a trans woman. the person she loves the most and feels herself around and for whom she fought tooth and nail. poetic if you ask me. oh i could write novels on this

This is a really fantastic return to form for this genre of post. In recent years there's been less and less effort put into this vital aspect of internet culture, it's nice to see a return to the truly artisanal work of the late 00s.
the yuri demons in my head made me do it
looking at the way mizuena started out as individuals, they could've easily devolved into another avoidant x anxious attachment train wreck. and they would have, except that they're both too kind to each other, even back then.
their own fears and insecurities always take a back seat when it comes to helping the other. mizuki, who was determined to keep niigo at arm's length, planned the mystery tour to get to know them better so insatiable wouldn't happen again. then the picnic event, where she's running through the woods with all kinds of worries in her head, but she silences them because saving ena is "what matters most."
seriously, let's all appreciate that THIS card came straight out of her maximum distance era:
that shit was never gonna last. not only is her "selfish" desire for true connection too strong, but she's also too much of a good person and a good friend.
and seeing this only strengthens ena's resolve to be there for her in return, as evidenced by the TWO times she flashes back to that moment in the last episode of picnic alone. then in footsteps, ena might hate the feeling of being iced out, but she decides she cares about and trusts mizuki enough to give her the space she needs. she fights her own impulsive, persistent nature with a promise to simply wait. and that's just arc 1.
loving each other has always brought out the best in them both.
