Let me tell you a story: My two friends Katherine and Shay saved up enough money to go to their first con and cosplay for all 4 days. They were excited to see all the people and get the opportunity to hang out with people they didn’t get to see often and people that enjoyed the same things they did. About a week after announcing they were going to con, a girl started messaging them, telling them that their cosplay was for faggots, telling them they’d be made fun of, telling them they’d get beat up for wearing it. The girl started harassing Katherine for cosplaying the same character as she was, and telling Shay she was too flat-chested to be an anime girl. Not too long after that, Katherine heard this (the above photo) while talking to a mutual friend.
Not only are feelings extremely hurt and self-esteem crushed but now they’re scared to go to their first con.
I’m sharing this because it seems like there is a LOT of cosplay-bashing lately. I’m not attacking anyone here, but this is an announcement:
COSPLAY IS FOR FUN.
You don’t have to look “amazing" to enjoy it - sure looking the part is great and people do love seeing accurate costumes BUT IT DOESN’T MATTER. Don’t tell anyone and don’t let anyone tell you you aren’t good enough. This is a form of bullying and it needs to stop.
Me and a few others tried talking to con staff and moderators of the facebook group about this girl’s behavior and they did nothing, even taking down the post telling everyone that cosplay bullying is not okay.
Now we’re told if we bring it up again, we’ll be banned from the group.
I’m not gonna say “Reblog this or else," and I’m not gonna say that you’re a bad person if you don’t - but If you’re against bullying - cosplay or otherwise, then I think this might belong on your blog.
