I feel like I'm about to die. My intro to my annotations is killing me. I asked my teacher for help, he gave me pointers then I did that and I came back to him and he was like do the opposite. And I'm like but you told me to do this!!!! Well do the opposite now. Done. No thank you.
Oh my god.
I ended up having to go to two different libraries. Since my book is so new (published in 1997), it's hard to find good criticisms on it. I've went through 6 "criticisms" with Mr. Kreinbring. I barely got three.
Competitive Nature
Becoming a Geisha is very competitive. There are awards based on which apprentice makes the most money. Especially if a Geisha takes up more than one apprentice. She will pit them against eachother. See which will work the hardest and do the most. Even if the apprentices don't have the same Geisha sister, they will still have to Duke it out for their "mother of okiya." The "ultimate honor" for a Geisha is to get adopted by their okiya. If two apprentices are under the same roof, only one gets adopted. The adoption is important because they will inherit the okiya. They will have a steady future.
Life
It was quite common for a young girl to be sold into prostitution or to be a Geisha. Especially if her parents would die very soon. If she was sold they would know that she would have a future and someone to look after them. As a Geisha they would go to school and learn many forms of arts. She would be educated and made to act like a proper lady. She would be better off, even though her virtue will be stolen from her. The girls even become envious of eachother. As maids they watch as the Geisha in their okiya have a purpose. They watch them become beautiful every day. They watch as the Geisha women wear the most beautiful clothes and hair styles.
Superstitions
Geisha are very very superstitious. Before they do anything the consult an almanac, then they go to a fortune teller. Before they leave their home they spark a geishas back for good luck. Even when a girl becomes a Geisha, her older sister consults a fortune teller and picks the new Geisha's name. Geisha must be very prim and proper and avoid all things that the almanac says to avoid for that day. If it says stay in, they stay in.
Ownership.
The mother of the okiya (home for Geisha) owns a young Geisha until all her “debts” are repaied. Debts like the amount of money she bought the girl for, Medical bills, anything she breaks/ruins as a maid like a cup, schooling to become a Geisha, registration fees, etc. Until she pays off all these debts (by working as a Geisha) she is owned by the okiya. But it’s most likely that if the girl becomes a famous Geisha the “mother” will adopt her because all of the money she makes afterward will go straight to the okiya.
Interesting Fact.
What is really interesting about this book is that it gives you the history and the facts about the differences of a prostitute and a Geisha. Satsu (main characters older sister) was sold into prostitution. They just jump into it. Whereas her younger sister Chiyo was sold to become a Geisha. In order to become a Geisha, one must be a maid to show her work ethic. Then they can start classes. Then another Geisha must accept her as "her little sister" (apprentice). Then her virginity is sold to the highest bidder. Then if she is destined to make a lot of money her home will adopt her. Geisha wear their bows in the back, prostitutes wear theirs in the front because they have to keep retying it.
Motherly Child
Though this child is 9 years old, she has always been told that she looks like her mother. She has her mother's gray eyes and water-like personality. Her older sister, though more grown, seems to be acting like a child in the situation they see themselves in. She has dirt smudged on her cheek, charcoal on her hands, with her hair matted in her face. Where as the little girl is the one to try and wipe off the smudge on her face. But the funny part is that the older sister knows what is going to happen, when the little one has no clue.
Eco Criticism
Many times through out the book, there are several references to the elements. Japanese culture (by this book) is all about nature, superstition, and money. But the most references are to nature, and money. The kimonos that the Geisha, maids, and mistresses all wear have some type of naturalistic embroidery. They even talk about how much water, wood, air, fire, etc. that is in a persons personality. They even use goose poop in their face makeup. Everything is so natural. The descriptions of the settings are always beautiful in some kind of way. Weather it’s the smell, the scenery, or the feel it’s always beautiful in it’s own way. The writer always finds something good about the scene or smell. Giving way to the hopeful girl that is the main character.
“Memoirs of a Geisha”
This book is amazing. The way it’s written is phenomenal. The writing is poised and articulate but it’s told in such a way that you learn things with the 9y/o girl. There are several realizations and oh no/ oh wow moments that just mess you up. My book is filled with sticky notes and I've only read the first 126 pages out of 428. I don’t have enough words to describe how well this book is written.
Tribe
Many of us walk down the halls feeling the need to explode. So much pressure is placed on us all. Our Chiefs keep changing forcing us to adapt year after year to new leadership. Our individualized ring leaders disappear from time to time or completely. Not only does our leadership change but the way things that a run are changed. We are forced to adapt to different oppressive leaders, in order to please them, we must hold the spear the way they want us to hold it. If we do not walk correctly, talk correctly, or wear our clothes correctly we could get removed from the tribe.
It’s not just our leaders that pressure us. We are make mind numbed robots that travel through life doing what we are told to do. Apply to college, and scholarships. Get great grades and keep your GPA up high. Take this test, and this test. All of these numbers define you as who you are. Even as a baby you are born with a high hope from your leader that you will be a high number. “The bigger the baby’s head the smarter they will be.”
Those of us that learn differently or cant control their emotions are condemned from the beginning. “The runt will just die any way,” Charlotte's Web. But the underdogs aren’t paid attention to. They are ignored and put aside, their potential is nothing to them because it doesn’t show in the present. But if our leaders took the time to realized that, like in Charlotte's Web, the runt of the litter could become something even bigger and better than anything one could imagine, if they gave it a bit of attention and help. We all are different in every way. We are not high or low numbers. We are human beings and we all learn on a different pace.
My second time writing this because it didnt post. 😡 My querencia is the "company." Though the company is continuously changing it always has a feeling of home. It isn't just the place that make it home it's the people. We act like a regular family. We fight and stir the pot but when it comes down to it we all come together to make something great. If one person is struggling in their daily life we work together to help them, no matter what it is. We mentor and teach eachother. We watch eachother grow.
I didn't like the book. I was interested by the book, but I struggled with it far too much. I enjoyed the poems and the stories but the way it flipped made it hard to understand. One second you would get a "ohhh" moment then next you would get a "what is happening????? " moment. Though that is probably a writer's technique, it is made for certain audiences. It was an interesting book and I like the idea of death and new beginning. It just wasn't for me.
The Ceremony starts with a poem and ends with a poem. But the beginning of the “poem” seems like a speaker or narrator. A quote from the beginning, “I’m telling you the story she is thinking. Ceremony.” She– the writer. A quote from the end, “It is dead for now.” Ceremony is an offering.
An interesting thought, each poem connects to the beginning and end.
I really struggled getting half way through this book. I couldn't stand how it swapped settings in the middle of the paragraph. It was so confusing and I never understood what was real. Maybe that was a writer's technique to confuse the audience and put them in the view of the Tyao. I'm not quite sure what it's purpose was. I understand he has PTSD but ???? What is happening???
Being the reader I am. I hate hate hate hate hate!!!! Prefaces. But what I hate more than anything is both a preface and an introduction. When I read a book I feel like they should just include the background in the book. I never read a preface or an introduction. Because sometimes they spoil the book. I'm just really frustrated with it because not only is there two but they're so boring.
Question.
Is the ending a choice for women to make? The entire book is a slippery slope. They went from freedom to this society that sucks. But it's not real. For us anyway. But the purpose of Atwood's slippery slope is to get women to ask themselves questions (her second ending). The first ending is a choice. Do we want to end in light or darkness. Depending on the choices we make in life, if we treat each other like dirt or lift eachother up, we will either end in darkness or light. There will be no in-between. But we won't know until that time comes.
