Mind your "yeah, but"s. Don't unnecessarily crush someone with negativity when they're excited about something or trying to be positive.
Someone in your friend group is REALLY excited that a popular artist just release a new song or album? Now's not the time to crush them by telling them how much you think that artist is overrated and that anyone who listens to them just doesn't know any real music. They're not hurting anyone, why make them feel bad or dumb just for being happy and excited?
Your co-worker tries to share something positive they read in the news, such whatever country you live in now has lower rates of alcoholism, or more trees than ever were planted last year in re-forestation efforts? Ask if yourself if it's necessary to "yeah, but" their positive news with a spin on making it negative. Is that helping at all or serving any purpose? In a lot of cases it's not helpful or necessary.
What do you really have to gain from crushing someone's excitement or attempts at being positive? Ask yourself what your real intentions are. Ask yourself if you actually have anything worthwhile to gain outside of crushing someone who was excited or trying to be positive.
And in the future, be more considerate of people who are excited about something harmless, or trying to be positive. You never know what inner pain or turmoil they could have in their personal life that they haven't shared with you, which they're just trying to get through with excitement and positivity. Consider being more supportive of their excitement or attempts at positivity in the future.
An invaluable skill I learned from the book How to Talk So Kids Will Listen And Listen So Kids Will Talk (the single greatest relationship/communication book I've ever read, BTW) is to respond with a "you" statement in situations like this.
Basically, if someone is all fired up about something that you don't care about, don't understand, actively dislike, whatever, you can still be considerate and just make a fairly neutral observation like "you really love _____" or "you must be so excited about _____" instead of dumping on their mood with your own negative opinions.

kill la kill is one of those things where it's just like. yeah ok there's things to be said about the sexualization of high school girls and the rampant imagery of such a thing in otaku culture and that's probably not a good thing, i get it. i am not going to act like the show was made out of pure benevolent feminism either; there are a lot of bits where trigger very clearly tried to have their cake and eat it too, and while i don't think this is necessarily a bad thing because sexualized art and horny design is just as artistically valid as more strait-laced storytelling, i could not tell someone they're wrong for being made uncomfortable by all of the gratuitous ass shots of satsuki.
but if you change basically any single "problematic" facet of the show i just feel like all the intended themes don't work nearly as well. you can't make the characters not high-schoolers (the fascist imagery of japanese school uniforms is brought up by satsuki herself in the second episode) and you can't make senketsu and junketsu more modest (proud bodily autonomy and free-spirited nudity is thematic empowerment against the fascist antagonistic forces that want to garb themselves in clothing and only use sex as a nonconsensual means of humiliation and control). like it's so embarrassing to say "no dude you don't get it they look like that because of the story" but in kill la kill's case that's entirely it. they can't not look like that or else it's a completely different show thematically! ryuuko and satsuki are some of the best characters ever and are so refreshing for women in any sort of action fiction. please watch kill la kill.
having an academic idiot 10 years older than me confidently say “you’re too young to remember Hurricane Katrina. you were just a baby!” and then having to inform them that 6 years old is plenty old enough to form memories and that I literally stood in the fucking eye of it and it killed people I knew and destroyed everything I knew. but yeah. I was just a baby probably and you know everything cause you watched it on the news from the comfort of your couch in your living room. my bad man.
when I was attending as an undergraduate at UNM I had to drop a class over this exact issue. my professor ARGUED WITH ME over specific events that occurred during Katrina, and then insisted it was in 2002 (it was in 2005) and that I was too young to know better and needed to shut up.
I lived off of MREs and bottled water being dropped by the coast guard in pallets. I lost my kindergarten teacher. I lost my entire childhood. and you…. “won” an argument.
this is escaping containment so I just want to clarify: this is the exception and not the rule with most people in the humanities.
this dickhead professor had several other issues and was pretty young. I was not the only student who had issues with him
most (over 90%) of people in these areas of study above a certain maturity level react to the information that I was in Katrina with nothing but sympathy, and sadness, and grace and understanding. ESPECIALLY if they are a poc or they lived in the south.
unlike a trauma like 9/11 which has become an unreal surreal meme over time to the general populace, Katrina is still a name that invokes horror and outrage amongst the educated. and for a very good reason.
Hurricane season starts in 2 months. we are less prepared than ever. that is intentional.
Fellow Katrina survivor. I turned 10 four days before the storm and had my birthday party on the beach the day before because we couldn't evacuate (household member would have needed air evac, had no access to such).
Take hurricane season seriously. El Niño years can cause people to let their guard down expecting a milder season. Even a mild season can produce major, life-threatening storms.
Keep a supply box, stock up on flashlights, consider evacuation routes if able and things like cooling during power loss (battery operated portable fans, misters, more water than you think you need).
It's almost bed for me or I'd have more to say, but just please prepare, and remember compassion.

giggled at something and my coworker comes out of the break room and goes "I just heard like, a haunted child laugh... so weird." and I'm like okay so it was a normal regular alive adult laugh actually
Yeah Kuaidul straight up shouted that he hitched a ride on Zwijo's ship and it's amazing no one noticed.

Found my 53yo very-much-not-online father in the kitchen today meticulously arranging cutlery on the countertop and i was like 'what are you doing' and he looked up at me with the world's most shit-eating grin and said "Your mother told me this is how you rick-roll the Youth" and i looked over and it was fucking. Loss.jpg.
i must stress that he's never seen the original comic. My mother simply showed him the shorthand symbol and he memorized it. As far as he is aware this is just a fucking hieroglyph that deals instant psychic damage to everyone under the age of 30
"Are people just now realizing-" we are being inundated by 1000000000 pieces of information on a daily basis + it is very difficult to keep track much less remember everything we read + have read over the past week, much less info we may have come across almost 10 years ago + hadn't committed to memory, especially w/ our shortening attention spans due to screen overexposure. cut us some fucking slack
