Obsession (2026) - DISCUSSION SPOILERS

I know a lot of people were shocked to learn that Ian and Nikki were hooking up but one, Ian actually seems like a funny and sweet guy who understands social cues pretty well. He told Bear that before he could ask Nikki out he needed to "invite romance into [their] conversations". He knew that there was no way Nikki was going to reciprocate Bear's feelings and he wanted to find a way to let him down easy.

And two: he told Bear to call her "Freaky Nikki" as a neg. That kind of thing only works when you have a solid rapport OR when you've invited in a specific mood. Bear seems to be dogshit at reading a room and obviously floundered when he called Nikki that. He wanted a reaction from her, anything to let him know that he was on the right path. But was this Ian sabotaging his chances at getting with her? No not necessarily. Ian was giving him advice based on what had worked for him. Which is what clued Nikki in on how Bear felt. That name had only ever been used on her in two contexts: bullying (which she knows Bear would never do considering he was there to see it) and flirting (something someone once used as an "invitation of romance").

So she called him out on it. She didn't want to lead him on or ruin their friendship she just wanted honesty. But instead of having any ounce of courage, instead of owning up to anything he felt or wanted: he just copied some other guy and forced his fuckass feelings on her.

Varang and Eywa (mommy issues duh)

I've seen some people online talk about how Varang is an atheist but I raise the idea that she's agnostic. It's an adamant rejection of faith.

Her lack of belief in Eywa stems from finding out that not only is god real but god doesn't choose her. Like a child realizing not only are they not the favorite but they were never been a contender. Her god protects the balance of life but regularly interferes when it comes to defending against the Sky People. And while I'm definitely not excusing her actions, I can also see how hard that is to differentiate between that and a Volcanic eruption that nearly wipes out your clan. But where's the balance in that? In her eyes, how can you justify protecting against one type of catastrophe over another?

Agnosticism is a broader spectrum, there are those who identify with it and acknowledge some form of a higher power but not under a pre-established monotheistic religion. Fire is pure to her because it does what it says it will do. It consumes. It burns. It cleanses. In her eyes it clears away the frivolity and reveals the truth.

AFAA Needed to be a character study

Another hot take I have is that the AFAA movie could have been darker emotionally. I felt like too many arguments were settled too quickly, Lo'ak's moment was also resolved too quickly and I'll talk about that in another post.

Right now I want to talk about Neytiri's journey. Her journey is one of significant loss and sacrifice. She's made choices that have directly impacted her ability to live a peaceful life.

- falling in love and mating with Jake

This seems to be the catalyst for everything that happens to her and she seems to consistently turn to place the blame on him. (To be fair it is usually somehow his fault, but like only because he exists as a symbol of the rebellion)

-having children with Jake

This was a decision made in a time of peace and neither one of them had any way of knowing it would come back to haunt them.

I really liked that Jake and Neytiri had that conversation. But I wish it had dragged out a little more. I wish it hadn't been brushed under the rug like that. Those types of resentments only fester and she only really seemed to change her mind when she saw the metaphorical blood on her hands. She saw the guilt but not the fallacy in her decision.

I just really needed to see just how far Neytiri was willing to go in terms of letting her grief consume her. I know she exists as a foil for Varang and that her faith had to be enough for her but what if it wasn't? What if she also felt abandoned by it? Belief in a higher power is a decision. It's a choice. You have to say yes even when you aren't sure anymore. I needed to see her pushed to that point and it just wasn't there. It wasn't brought up in the second movie and then it was glossed over in this one.

And I say all of this as someone who has felt that loss and guilt. I needed to see her putting out an extra plate when they sit down to eat as a family. I needed to see them stumble over the names when they call for their children. So many details of the grieving process that weren't included.

I just could've done with less action in this one (although it was beautiful and I did enjoy it).

"We can't keep living like this in hate" -Jake

SPOILERS FOR AFAA

I saw a post just now from someone talking about how excited they are to see the Neytiri's continued descent into madness and it led me back to the quote above.

Jake has such a soft spot for the Sky People because he sees himself in them. He sees the fear driving their decisions, he understands their greed and consequential destruction of Pandora. It doesn't mean he supports it. But when he said that I felt like he had missed the point entirely.

Is hatred all consuming? Yes.

Is it unhealthy to obsess over the object of your hatred? Yes, in some cases it is better to walk away.

But in this case? When you are actively being hunted down by the thing that killed your child? No.

So when people talk about Neytiri's madness, I feel like they aren't seeing her utter lack of support. Her child is gone, she can't go home because his soul is tied to this strangers home. And worst of all her husband won't hurry up to end all of their suffering and tells her to let go of the hatred she holds against him. Jake even keeps Spider around, the object of her Quaritch's desire and the reason her child died.

My point is, I think it's crazy for Jake to ask Neytiri to just let go of her feelings surrounding this. I think she's allowed some grace during this very insanely trying time.

Also Neytiri accepting Spider at the end felt forced in my opinion. I was honestly hoping to see someone find out that he saved Quaritch and blow up on him. But who knows. Maybe there's hope in the next one

I can't believe I never considered this. I've seen these movies and I've made countless edits for this franchise but I completely missed this.

Avatar reminds me of the bible (I will talk more about this in another post) in that it's cyclical. The major themes and arcs are used as calling cards for future characters and their respective journeys.

So why wasn't this shown in the movie? Why wasn't grief and loss shown as a way to bridge that divide? I understand that grief is irrational, I know that it changes you as a person and it's difficult to maintain your relationships without proper support (Neytiri is a great example of this).

But Jake? Jake has been through loss. Yeah he wasn't the closest with his brother, but losing your twin is like losing half your soul. This is what I've been saying AFAA needed in terms of emotional depth. It needed to show us the connections that the characters are building amidst the battles and the losses and the grief. That family of any make can persevere through the toughest of hardships because they have each other and they choose to reach for each other time and time again. Family isn't just about duty to the blood connection, it's about choosing to be there no matter what and this was such a missed opportunity.

I just want to talk about the mastery behind the color choices and the scene it's referencing for a minute

Gun safety / one finger on the trigger, but a full hand pushing the gun away from him

The line of yellow up the length of his body and through his head tracing the line of the bullet but instead of it being red, instead of the blood he'd be spilling its almost like a spark. A lightbulb moment where he's realizing what he's about to do and he's pushing it away.

I'm honestly just in awe of this piece and I really love the choices that were made here

Headcanon that HumanAU! Jake is a minivan/soccer dad and HumanAU! Neytiri is a motorcycle mom. She taught him how to drive one (he bought his own after 2 months there's gen no way he waited any longer) and they go on day trips every other weekend and full weekends every other month.

Neteyam was still learning (he was scared that Lo'ak would copy him too young). He preferred a quiet morning ride where he could enjoy the sunrise and feel like he was starting his day off with appreciation. He wanted to compete the same way Lo'ak did but he didn't want to add more energy to his already reckless style through brotherly competition (he just liked having a shared interest)

Kiri has a Vespa or maybe an electric bike. Nothing too fancy she just wants to wander around in the city or the quiet side roads of the towns she and her friends travel to

Lo'ak was a dirt biking champ and has been competing since he was 7. Fully modded with bigger pipes and every neon color under the sun. He even managed to stick a Bluetooth speaker inside it so he can keep blasting music while he competes (gets deducted a lot for this but he doesn't care, says that silence "ruins the vibe"

Tuk has the exact same bike just in her size. Modifications and everything. She's too small to control it well and the family has a running gag where they set a timer to see how long before she flips it/falls off. The current record is 32s

I genuinely thought that AFAA was going to be a divorce/separation film. Maybe it's my own experiences influencing this but I couldn't see how Jaytiri was going to come out of losing a first born without blaming each other to some degree.

And while I was right and they did, I wish it had been a little more dragged out. I feel like that level of resentment doesn't just go away that simply.

Maybe it was one of those fights you just brush under the rug because you know there's no coming back from what you'll eventually say. What you really feel.

I think if I were to write a fanfic it would center around that

The Jake Sully we see as a Father is one in an active War. Yes. That is correct but I would also like to raise Jake Sully as a Father who struggles with his kids becoming autonomous and not needing him anymore. And War certainly isn't helping.

PTSD is so difficult to manage and it manifests as so many different things but I see it in Jake as his inability to let his kids get too close to him. He's seen countless people die just for being close to him or being related to him and he's tired. He's just a tired tired guy and he can't muster up anything outside of making sure his family lives beyond him.

And this is different from my usual Jake criticism but I just want to acknowledge that he really does struggle.

It's almost like the cycle of narration is forcing him to relive everything from the first movie. The adaptation to a new life, the hunts, the threats, the loss of a brother. The loss of a mother. The responsibilities of the adults falling prematurely onto the shoulders of the young.

And in all of this he's losing his mind begging someone to listen to him, to hear him call out the warning signs but no one understands. They can't. They bore no witness to his war. Maybe they'll listen next time. I hope they never need to.

The sonic boom that heralds Superman’s arrival is terrifying at an instinctive level. It’s like getting buzzed by fighter jets but ten times worse. You can hear him coming, but only for the briefest of moments. The earth shakes. Windows ripple and shattered. Wind gusts through the street and if you’re lucky — he won’t land hard, too. He’ll lower himself down, slowly, while the kickback from his arrival shatters through the atmosphere above you.

I also like the parallel this has with Batman. Like imagine being a criminal just minding your own business and all of a sudden you just sense something is wrong. You don't hear anything out of the ordinary, if anything, you hear even less, like the room has been muted and the air around suddenly feels heavy. Something compels you to turn around, whilst another part of you is telling you to run and not look back. You turn and there he is, this shadow shaped man watching you and then that silence is suddenly broken by a burst of movement so sudden it roars in your ears and then he's there, right in front of you, moving so quick you could never be convinced he was human.
