Two years ago, Sasuke would have said the exact same words. They are ones the 19-year-old understands far too well. His face becomes distant as memories of the past play in his head. He tried to kill his own heart to achieve revenge against his elder brother and, eventually, Konoha itself. Human emotions and bonds were a weakness that held him back from killing Itachi. Sasuke would have burnt the whole world down to achieve total revenge against the system that hurt him so terribly. If it wasn’t for Naruto dragging out of the darkness, Sasuke would have embraced the totality of darkness within his blackened heart.

The Uchiha snaps back to reality, processing this young woman’s words. Part of him wonders what would make her feel in such a way. The other part of him knows not to pry into such things. He pauses, and then chooses his words carefully, “The human heart is what separates us from becoming monsters. It also transforms us into them, should we give into the pain of a broken heart.” Sasuke spoke from personal experience. The evidence was written on his gaunt face.
