The Hug

No, you don't understand. Harlan in the discord responded to all the "Why doesn't Arthur say I love you back?" with "He was just really scared" and it's completely changed the way I view the hug scene forever. People are drawing Arthur and John both smiling during it. I can only see it from two POVs now of John being grateful and loved and Arthur being horrified because he's allowing himself this moment where John is out of his head and unable to see his face to allow himself to feel the fear and consequence of never seeing his family, friends, and home ever again.

So I'm really fucked right now.

Arthur is dreaming. His words are quiet and mumbled, vowels stumbling over each other as they escape his lips. His body contracts in on itself, held in a tight ball. John can feel his hand crushed against Arthur's chest frozen in a state of pressure. It doesn't cause him pain aside from the ache he feels for Arthur's torment. Arthur's arm spasms against the tension yet it doesn't ease. Softly John presses outwards his hand slowly escaping Arthur's gravity. He reaches up fingertips finding Arthur's elbow. He closes his palm around Arthur's arm, thumb swirling gently, Arthur's shirt catching on his clammy skin.

“Arthur” he hushes, the timber of his voice a warm shadow in the darkness “Easy Arthur Easy.”

He continues smoothing over Arthur's arm muscles finally feeling the tension begin to melt away.

Amongst the mess of quieting mumbles he thinks he hears his name.

“Sleep…sleep. It's just a dream”
