This is Melqart’s final design, because the “sailor” looking outfit is cute. If I had the decency to put him in a white tunic, his outfit would officially come together.

Melqart is basically my off-brand version of both Mike Goutokuji and Chimata if you blended them into a blender along with Tyrian purple dye. (personality wise. It wouldn’t makes sense for them to have similar backstories). Actually I based Melqart more loosely off of Chimata personality wise, but only in the sense that they’re both haughty and deeply value laws of the marketplace, commerce is their lifeblood. But that would be about it honestly, they both come from completely different cultures with differing values, stigmas, and laws. Melqart is more entrepreneurial and would turn a profit any chance he gets, which conflicts with Chimata’s standards and such.

Thinking about my interpretation of Melqart being sort of based off of Chimata made me think of Eshmun taking the part of Megumu (personality and relationship wise because Eshmun isn’t a bird, he’s a tree.)

Nonbinary people are the biggest hypocrites when it comes to gender theory. Aside from the fact that it's mostly women who are trying to escape oppressive gender stereotypes, nonbinary people frequently complain about how restrictive gender norms are, and these restrictions are what made them want to be nonbinary in the first place.

However, if you are implying to be outside of the binary, doesn't that imply everyone else is within the binary? Doesn't that push gender norms further onto everyone around you, assuming that they want to fall into the mold and oppression, while you do not?

Gender ideology is all wrong at it's core, but I decided to make this post especially about nonbinary people's hypocrisy, because you're not about to go around complaining about the very system that helps you continue being who you are.

Pagan solidarity is cringe since most pagans are ultra nationalists who only care about aesthetics (Assyrians and Greeks from what I’ve seen). Hannibal’s personal patron god was Melqart, yet in the Latin books Punica, Hannibal assaults herculess, Melqart’s roman equivalent, with a rock. This is because the roman god holds contempt for Hannibal due to his aspirations to destroy rome, despite Hannibal having a dream where he was visited by Melqart and was told to annihilate rome under the wishes of his patron. If syncretism had any validity and these are the same gods just with a different name, then why is Melqart contradicting what he told Hannibal in his dream, and choosing to hold contempt for Hannibal in favor of kissing foreign ass? Hannibal assaulting herculess is basically him rejecting a false foreign god and remaining loyal to his true god.

Too bad there are no actual Semitic pagans that actually exist out there. Nergal/Erra RKGK because I got distracted when drawing Resheph

Erra and Nergal have been cemented in my mind as being the same god, since a lot of annotations and analyses of the Erra epic make the comparison between them and creating two separate designs for functionally the same war/plague god from the same general area won’t be fun. (My very early Nergal design is now my design for Šimut.)

Plus, while reading the Erra Epic I’ve come to notice how Nergal (like every other Mesopotamian god) is incredibly mischaracterized and flanderized. Apart from Erra/Nergal being seen only as “basic war plague god” despite being war god who is actually tired of fighting in the first half of his myth and has to be dragged out of bed by Ishum. I’ll never understand the idea of Nergal and Ereshkigal being a cute and wholesome couple who rule the underworld together as a lovebirds. It’s confusing to me because in the version of the Ereshkigal and Nergal myth I read, Nergal clearly doesn’t care about Ereshkigal and only agreed to stay with her because she gave him dibs over the underworld, which she only did because Nergal was threatening to decapitate her for being obsessive. There’s two versions of this myth and in both versions Nergal is an asshole who doesn’t give a rats ass about Ereshkigal and only stays with her in one version for her status, though by mythology standards that’s probably the most lovey dovey two gods can get.

Just like JJK and Undertale fans, mythology fans are incapable of reading.

Eshmun was actually posed nude on his coin, but I’m burnt out drawing so much Baals. Not to say I haven’t tried illustrating it.

Thinking about Shadrapa and Horon but can only draw Melqart and Eshmun. I have a lot of fully finished Eshmun-Melqart illustrations that I don’t feel like posting. So I’ll just wait till next year to get around to posting.

But I’m still working on the Phoenician doujin where Ashur(God emperor of the Universe) asphyxiates Melqart.

Samemroumos and Ushu. The founders of Saida.

Ushu is actually the name of a mainland city that was responsible for providing Tyre water and serving as burial grounds for the deceased. In the myth, the brothers are called Samemroumos and Ousoos, but I opted for the name Ushu instead because It’s theorized that the name Ousoos is derived from Ushu, and plus Ousoos sounds ugly.

In Sanchuniathons Phoenician history, Samemroumos and Ushu were two brothers who became dubbed as the founding fathers of Sidon and Tyre. They taught people how to hunt and tailor clothes from animal skin. Eventually Ushu got up one day and sailed out of sea on his little makeshift boat because his brother was pissing him off or something, later creating Tyre. I stumbled upon a history forum where they were attributing Ushu to Melqart. I believe they even theorized that Baal Shamayim, the God from Palmyra, was supposed to be the divinized version of Samemroumos, because they’re names both have the same word in it and that’s it. (Most of this syncretism stuff boils down to that.)

But I guess Melqart being Ushu has more validity since Melqart was already credited for founding Tyre in the cities lore. And Melqart has connections as this royal underworld God, likely being the King of the deceased. As you can see, the “validity” isn’t much, but it’s still a very interesting interpretation nonetheless. So that’s why Ushu (The one being eaten by a lion) bares a resemblance to Melqart. Because Melqart being a Rephiate is my favorite interpretation. Unlike Eshmun, who’s just a victim of eheumerizing(don’t care if it’s misspelled) Melqart being a human feels natural given the whole mythology surrounding the Rephiam, and their roles as deceased ancestors who were highly respected. It’s like Melqart is a symbol of human integrity and innovation. Plus it’s fitting for the Melqart festival thing.

(Side note, I wish we had an authentic and accurate translation of Phoenician history that wasn’t hellenized and translated/ censored by a woke Christian Lolcowlizer. Philo of Byblos was well meaning in his efforts to preserve the work, but all he did was project a bunch of garbage greek gods and their STDs into the Sanchuniathon writings. And then Eusebius came and just spat on history and art. If Eusebius was alive today he’d definitely be one of those sensitive english localizers going around and censoring jrpgs for portraying the church as evil and not being progressive to his western standards.)

Melqart-Eshmun

Daily funfact: *long sigh* Melqart was regarded as the protective patron deity of Tyre, who appeared in worship since the city’s earliest days during the 3rd millennium BC, while Eshmun was venerated as Sidons male chief deity all the way back to the 2nd millennium BC. Melqart’s true origins remain a bit scattered, as many speculate that Melqart as a figure existed way before the advent of Tyre in the midst of the 14th century, and that King Hiram reintroduced Melqart’s worship to the region which allowed it to become much more widespread as Tyre expanded. Though this theory isn’t taken too serious considering that this theory can only be plausible if you syncretize Melqart with an Ammonite deity bearing the same kingly title as him, along with a similar “chthonic nature”. It’s not too far fetched to believe, however the theory just has a bit too many gaps in it due to the limited knowledge on the region in the first place.

Eshmun and Melqart are often linked together as vegetative deities who fit the archetype of a “Rising and Dying God”, a common trope in the ANE. The death and eventual resurrection of deities like Melqart were believed to be vital to the agricultural cycle ancient civilizations relied so heavily upon. This grand importance placed upon such Gods is what inspires the celebrations of these deities to take place in cultic calendars that mark the New Years and shifting seasons.

The Festival of Melqart was a spring festival that took main priority in the city of Tyre. The Gods focal place of worship. Its said that the festival lived on for three days either in February or March, with the main premise of the Festival revolving around the death and rebirth of Melqart, while also insuring the kingship of the current Tyrian sovereign. Making the Festival a political one as well. The dying and rising aspect of these festivals mainly centered on an effigy, that was meant to be a direct depiction of the God Melqart, being tied on a pyre and burned as it was sent off into sea. Very poetic.

During festivals, the temple of Melqart held strict rules as to what was acceptable and what was considered offensive. Offering pork was disrespectful, women were prohibited from entering the temple, and foreigners/ tourists were kicked out of the city during the festival days. Also known as ancient gatekeeping. Melqart probably just hated tourists because even foreign people weren’t allowed to make offerings to him in his own temple. Which is why this guy named Alexander had a hissy fit and slaughtered the people of Tyre.

I wanted to get the Melqart stuff done in February but I was bogged down by exams + procrastination. But I’ll try to get these out for Melqart and Eshmun.
