What did you do this summer? This summer I came back from a year abroad in Florence and spent some time getting reacquainted with Northampton and Smith! I worked as a Senior Interviewer for the Admissions Office, got back into the habit of going to the gym, dined at Northampton restaurants, and read and watched a bunch of books and films. My favorite movie this summer was Infernal Affairs, a Hong Kong cop thriller, and my favorite read was a tie between Lies My Teacher Told Me and Chop Suey: A Cultural History of Chinese Food in America!
Have you gone abroad? Where/when? I went to Greece the summer of 2014 to travel with some professors as part of a seminar! I spent three weeks going around the islands, and six weeks doing an archaeological dig in Athens. I hopped over to Los Angeles for a few weeks to visit home, then got back on a plane to spend my Junior year in Florence, Italy.
Where did you meet most of your friends? I have found friends in such a wide variety of places here at Smith. A lot of them of from my house, Park Complex, especially because Iâm super involved in my house community. However, I have a great deal of friends outside the house, too, including students in my year that I met during Orientation, in my classes, from my jobs, during my study abroad programs (Greece and Italy), from Crapapella⊠Itâs easy to make friends at Smith because weâre all in it together, and Iâve had friends from all class years every year Iâve been at Smith!
What jobs have you had at Smith? My first year at Smith I worked at the Chase-Duckett dining hall (am Iâm still tight with the staff there - one still gives me Choco Tacos when he sees me!). I didnât think Iâd like washing dishes all too much, and aspects of the job are mildly unpleasant, but I got used to it quick and I got to meet a lot of other students on Work-Study, which was nice. Sophomore year I worked at Hillyer Art Library, shelf-reading stacks of books and checking out materials to patrons. This year Iâm continuing that job, as well as picking up some extra shifts as a Senior Interviewer at the Admissions Office, the job I had over the summer.
Tell me about your best friend at Smith. I can name a million and one. My first-year roommate, Linnea, through whom Iâve been through thick and thin and learned a lot from, and with whom Iâve had entirely too many 2 AM conversations about ~life~. My sophomore year roommate, Brady, who is sweet and caring and today taught me how to pot plants and also makes guacamole and ants-on-a-log on the regular! Isabella and Michaela, who are vastly different but with whom Iâve traveled the Europe and had amazing conversations about where weâve come from. Yuka, Kait, Khadejeh, none of whom Iâve ever had a class with or anything but who Iâve befriended in an effort to be half as cool and fashionable and interesting as they naturally seem to be. Emily, Yiwen, Ellie⊠I could name names until the cows come home, and these are just the ones who are in my year and doesnât include the people I want to get to know better! I can say without a single doubt that Smith women are the most amazing women Iâve met.
Whatâs your favorite study spot? Iâm inside my room quite a lot when it comes time to study, but I also venture to other places when I need to get stuff done! I like the Reading Room in Neilson, BUT the super comfy sofas WILL lure you to sleep, so go armed with coffee and not past dark! I went into Forbes, the local library, to read this summer and it makes a great study space! I work at Hillyer, the art library on campus, and itâs a bit smaller than Neilson and makes for a great alternative study space! Occasionally Iâll venture into my houseâs common spaces, my friendâs rooms, or cafes downtown to study, but the bulk of my work gets done in my room or in a library!
Favorite place to eat downtown? Noooooooooo I cannot choose!!! Okay, well, Amanouz has great couscous and sandwich-type things, plus their mint tea is super great. Banh Mi Saigon is the best for Asian food in NoHo, and I love their pho! Tart has great pastries and itâs my goal to go there more often this year. Local Burger is a surefire winner, their Capân Crunch corn dog is different, plus I adore their veggie burgers. Woodstar is a very cute cafe, as is The Roost, although the latter is farther from campus. Shout-out to Herrelâs for great ice cream and LimeRed for having boba!
