Movie - Cloverfield.

History - Cloverfield is the very first kaiju film to be shot it the style famously made patent by The Blair Witch Project, Cloverfield brings viewers a new perspective in the midst of a monster invasion. Blending perfectly executed CGI scenes of destruction and chaos with a realistic military response that brings a chill down some of the strongest movie-goers spines.

Plot - During a party to celebrate the leaving of a dear friend, video taper Hud finds himself tasks with filming goodbyes. Rob, the man of celebration finds himself staying in his home town of New York a bit longer then anticipated when a garbage pier boat explodes off the bay. Its only after leaving the apartment that the terror is beyond an isolated explosion. A giant monster is terrorizing the city while release hungry and rampant parasites that feed on any moving thing. Determined to rescue his girlfriend, Rob finds himself with his closest friends running through a war torn city losing more and more hope at every turn.

Personal Rating - 7 OUT OF 10 = The stereotype of not enough monster in a monster movie is almost the definition of this film. However, the new perspective in a world full of monsters brings us something almost never before seen. With flawless CGI and intense and swift moments of fear and terror. Bringing dangerous moments and moments of intense of hopelessness, Cloverfield is a unique film that fills a different role in the Kaiju genre.

Movie - Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

History - Noted as one of the best films of 1956 and one of the top ten science fiction movies of all time. Originally a book, Invasion of the Body Snatchers is a film that holds an underlying tone that holds relevance during the time period. When the RED SCARE was in full bloom, this film held the underlying tone of theoretical communism and the fear losing ones individuality give this film a fearsome undertone.

Plot - A psychiatrist is called in late to the hospital as per request for a disgruntled and horrified patient is accepted into the hospital. The patient identifies himself as Dr. Miles Bennell who finds himself at a loss for words over his own experience. He recalls a horrifying tale of identity and terror upon his return from a European trip. He returns under order from the overflowing amount of request from his patients however as he comes back, almost all of the patients cancelled their appointment deeming it to be a “nothing situation”. As he becomes re-situated into his home, he begins to hear claims of individuals not being their selves and that they have “replaced”. These claims have been pouring in one by one but eventually then disregarded by those who have made the claims.  As he tries to disregard that strange occurrences, he decides to let his suspicions subside as he goes to dance with his long known lover. Upon reaching the diner, he receives a call demanding his services. Cutting his dinner and his date short, he rushes to his friends house Jack to see what his issue is. Together they find a body, a strange corpse without an distinct characteristic or fingerprint. Confused and concerned,  Miles heads over to his loves house only to find another simple like body deep in the basement. In due time, Miles, Jack, Becky (Miles love interest) and Jacks wife decide to stick together only to find strange and disturbing pods that eject and grow these strange surrogate bodies. The mystery unfolds further upon finding that individuals have been replaced with disturbed and emotionless creatures. Miles finds himself within a battle against a race of creatures who have replaced his friends and family and even more disturbing, a struggle against a ever closing sleep that would mean then end of his life.

Personal Rating - 10 OUT OF 10 = This film brings a horrifying aura of lonliness and dread. Making a great effort on the horror of the unknown and the unseen. Invasion of the Body Snatchers is a real horror film that deserves the respect of any horror fan. Brought together with the wonderful acting of Kevin McCarthy, the film gives us one of the most recognizable soundtracks and quotes in all movie history. “They’re here already! You’re next!”.

History - KRONOS! is a strange and different film for the time. Historically filmed in a little more then 2 weeks. KRONOS! features an alien machine that represents in a symbolic sense, the over consumption of man the rampant deforestation of the world. The idea and concept of the machine was later adapted in the original Star Trek series as The Dooms Day Machine.

Plot - As a flashing UFO sends itself towards space, it emits a small flashing orb that hurdles to earth and lands in a small desert street. After seeing the strange light, a man pulls over only to have the ball of light become absorbed into him. Clearly now controlled by this strange extraterrestrial force, he then heads towards the army base nearby and then sends the controlling force into the Chief of Sciences body and drops dead. The Chief now in control observes the scientist in their attempts to stop the UFO but finds itself able to continue its observation as the UFO lands in Pacific ocean near Mexico. Arises a large world terraforming and taking every single resource it can without sympathy! Only the combined might of the worlds scientist can possibly stop the horrors of KRONOS!

Personal Rating - 7 OUT OF 10 = Sound effects that are as iconic as “War of the Worlds”, KRONOS! is an invasion film that bears a heavy symbolic gesture towards the over indulgence of the world. With strange special effects that are added to the amazing sensations of the film. Jeff Morrows brings some rather seriousness fake tension to the film but the star of the movie is not him, its the humongous robot that absorbs the world and no one can ever say otherwise.

History - Known for its intense military scenes and sub-par puppeteer work, Reptilicus made its mark in cult film history by bringing together some of the most iconic special effects together for the big screen. With such a massive cult following, scenes from the movie were occasionally aired in the popular TV series “The Monkees”.

Plot - While in Lapland, miners pull up a massive drill only to find it soaked in blood and flesh. Horrified beyond belief, the miners dig up what seems to be a large and old at best. Taken to a laboratory in Copenhagen to be analyzed by Professor Martins. However one night, the freezer in which the tail is housed in is compromised by the overworked professor. However it is discovered the the tail had began to regenerate once the temperature got to the optimal point. Dubbed Reptilicus by the doctor, this creature begins to regenerate beyond housing capabilities and grows to a destructive size eating cattle and killing! only the might of science and the danish military can bring the creature to eats knees… or so it seems. When it is found out to be capable of regeneration and splicing, the military finds themselves stuck in a rock and a hard place in this retro-riffic sci-fi thriller!

Personal Rating - 8 OUT OF 10 = The puppeteer work is sub-par at best and falls short of being one of a skilled coordinator, however this movie still finds itself housed in a special and admirable spot in my heart. The live action shots of the military and city people is one that breathes life into this film and gives it the thrilling sensation it so deserves.

Movie - The Giant Gila Monster.

History - About as low budget and low budget can get, The Giant Gila Monster only had a roughly estimated 138,000 dollar budget to film. This film was also widely known as the film that was being made along side another film by the same director called The Killer Shrews. The Giant Gila Monster was made famous by its use of a real live Gila Lizard in a miniature set.

Plot - With no real reason for the monsters creation, the monster emerges from the gloomy desert town hungry for meat. Left and right across the town and speed hungry teenagers whose only solace in the dry town is race cars and hot rods. Chase Winstead a local teen who is a savant at tuning cars grows a bond with the local sheriff as they help to find the missing teens. However their search grows grim as only pushed aside cars litter the streets. Some slight evidence relating the crash to a creature explodes when suddenly the monster attacks a train leaving the evidence of the few survivors to tell the tale. With a 70 ft long poisonous reptile being the culprit, only the luck of the towns people, some crappy pop songs and an un likely bond between a teen and a sheriff can possibly bring down the beast.

Personal Rating - 6.5 OUT OF 10 = A bunch of dumb teenagers and an easy going cop gather round for some poorly made special effect action. Shitty songs about Jesus and god are sung that in no way represent anything that is happening. All this and yet this movie is pure fun. Nothing makes any sense and you’ll be saying “Awe how cute” instead of “Oh God that’s scary.”

Movie - The Monster that Challenged the World.

History - The Monster that Challenged the World was a strange film that was given a strangely well off review. Being deemed a monster movie with special effects that move the movie along well with  intense life size monster mayhem.  The Monster that Challenged the World is also noted as being swiftly filmed. Taking only 16 days to film including all on land and under water filming.

Plot - While training for parachute pick up procedures, a navy crew discovers their simply training exercise takes a turn for the worst as the paratrooper is missing. Their quick search ends with a mysterious death that leaves the troops baffled. Cmdr John Twill and a small search team find the boat vacant and coated with a strange slime when out of the water emerges the lifeless body of one of the missing men. Totally drained all blood and fluids, the man is beyond saving. After taking the strange slime back to a lab to be analyzed, it is discovered to belong a mutated mollusk that was released from is ancient entombment during an earthquake. As all beaches are shut down as a safety measure, its found that they are traveling through irrigation tunnels and rivers. their mobility not only threaten this city, but the entire world!

Personal Rating - 7.5 OUT OF 10 = While the under water shots seem lengthy and a bit on the under-dramatic side, their is no denying the fact that the life size models of the monsters bring the worst of chills to your spine. Expertly crafted and puppeteered, the creature give the movie a breath of life that creates an ambiance of suspense and horror.

Movie - 20 Million Miles to Earth.

History - Reaching a new height in special effects, 20 million Miles to Earth is one of Ray Harryhausen’s master pieces. The creature being one of the most recognizable of his monsters, the films brings the voyages and dangers of other planets and monsters to the screen in a way that his never been done before. Becoming what would be the new standard in american monster movies, 20 Million Miles to Earth redefines the genre with its masterful presence.

Plot - As the sky lights up with a terrifying glow,  two fishermen off the coast Italy spot a spaceship falling from the sky and crashing into the sea. The brave men set foot inside finding all but two spacemen alive and the rest dead. Fortunately the crew escapes with the space adventurers just before the ship sinks to the ocean floor. In Washington, the report of the missing ship reaches Major A.D McIntosh and takes a crew with him. While investigating the wreck, Major McIntosh meets a troublesome wrong boy named Pepe who’s antics have led to the discovery of a metal capsule. Inside a strange gel like substance. Pepe reports to the major that he had delivered the strange discovery to a traveling Zoologist in the mainland. Under all conditions, the strange substance hatches in a bizarre turn of events. A small bipedal creature emerges with bizarre features. While the Zoologist keeps the creature in a cage for safety reasons, it is discovered the fate of the space explorers. While on the planet, the harsh atmosphere had altered the theories of the government. The capsule held the unborn child of the inhabitants of the strange world. It is soon discovered that the weak atmosphere alters the creature causing to grow at an unnatural rate that not only baffles the scientist, but pits the military and their might against a monster that can only begin to understand.

Personal Rating - 9 OUT OF 10 = This movie holds more the retro-age scifi action and thrills. It holds a hidden message, a bizarre interpretation of what it means to be a monster and questions the fine line between good and evil. there is no right and wrong in this movie, only the stance of the military and the instincts of the monster. While the ending seems to end with a solid foundation, a haunting question remains in the aftermath if whether the men you have been routing for truly understand that nature of their conflict.

Movie - The Giant Claw.  The Mark of the Claw.

History - Taking imagery from the TOHO classic RODAN, and a French-Canadian folklore story, The Giant Claw made a name for itself in two ways. The first being in its later years as being recognized as a cult classic, with an incredibly cheap budget and bizarre puppeteer work, The Giant Claw has found a cozy home in creature feature history. However, The Giant Claw was initially a huge flop. Actor Jeff Morrow (KRONOS. This Island Earth) was present during the first showing of the film and left in embarrassment before anyone could recognize him and drank the night away. Along with the laughing crowd over the face of the creature and the sub-par special effects, The Giant Claw fell terribly upon critics.

Plot - While conducting tests at the north pole, Civil aerospace scientist Mitch MacAfee spots a strange UFO. In an attempt to identify the object, three jet fighters are deployed to intercept the UFO. During the encounter, one jet fighter pilot goes missing and MacAfee is blamed for the initial disappearance. Faced with shame, MacAfee heads back to New York but finds himself under attack by the same UFO, with the pilot dead, Mitch retreats into the Canadian wilderness with his mathematician girlfriend Sally Caldwell when they are fortunately found by a French Canadian farmer. While on call with the Military the the farmers house, Mitch finds that his claim may not be as crazy as fist thought for multiple other jets have gone dark from radar and radio. The calls coming in of a giant bird as big as a battle ship start flooding in. As test after test is placed before the world, the apparent extraterrestrial bird made of anti-matter starts tightening its grip around the world as civilization begins to panic and wonder what could possibly destroy this terror from another dimension. 

Personal Rating - 6.5 OUT OF 10 = While I do not find the special effects nearly as bad as the past claims, the creature does appear somewhat hilarious. The bugging eyes give the bird a somewhat puzzled and surprised look throughout the movie. Jeff Morrow is the actor in the film that tries to hold any sense of drama afloat regardless of the bizarre monster. With the film being as retro b-movie as possible, it is hard to dislike. The saying goes as “This film is so bad, that it is good.”

Movie - It Came From Beneath the Sea!

History - It Came From Beneath the Sea is one of Ray Harryhausen’s iconic films. With the special affects being one of Harryhausen’s trademark shots, It Came From Beneath the Sea exposes the trademark talent of one of America’s greatest scifi special effects artists. With a minimal budget, the film still manages to become as iconic as ever, going down in history as one of the most recognizable creature feature films ever.

Plot - While on a simple a simple patrol of the ocean, Commander Pete Matthews, commander of a nuclear powered submarine, finds himself with a strange problem. A massive sonar response comes back with titanic readings. Obviously not another submarine, the crew attempts to discover the identity of the response until its discovered it is getting closer. Before the crew can go to red alert, the submarine is halted by the mysterious entity. Only by a miracle of chance is the vessel able to shift loose and return back to harbor. Upon reaching land, a massive hunk of animal tissue is found in the propeller blades. A team of biologist come to the sight in order to identify the sample. Upon testing, the sample shows to be that of an octopus, a massive species that was unnaturally evicted due to the testing of the hydrogen bomb. After several incidents involving shipping bots and other sea transports, its only in due time that the creature makes landfall in the predicted zone of the San Francisco Bay. With a deadly wake left in the monsters tracks, its predicted that only a strategic hit of a torpedo can destroy the monster. Simple as it may sound, the beast does not make anything easy for mankind and will not rest until is destructive hunger and brutality is met with satisfaction!

Personal Rating - 6.5 OUT OF 10 = The special effects are a wondrous spectacle. With gorgeously executed shots and almost flawless stop motion action moments, its earned its title as on of Ray Harryhausen’s best. However, the almost laughable acting and drama-less essence destroys any strong tension. Still beyond that is the first sequence inside the submarine, being one of the greatest suspense scenes in creature feature history, it is a shame that the same acting strength isn’t continued throughout the film.

Movie - THEM!

History - THEM! marks the first ever “bug creature” monster film. Released in 1954, THEM! was the american anti-nuclear film that brought the subject of nuclear detonation to the table. THEM! is renowned as “The B-movie that isn't” in that its expectations were completely destroyed. THEM! still today holds its grown as one of the most fearsome and renowned american horror scifi films in history. THEM! was originally intended to be in color and to also be in 3-D, however the budget was reduced last minute only leaving the title intro in color and 3-D. 

Plot - While on standard patrol around New Mexico, Officer Peterson and Officer Blackburn are called to search a girl reported missing. Spotted by aerial supported, the officers find the girl traumatized and in shock walking with a doll in hands. As the bring her into the car, the call of a trailer is reported just ahead of their location. Upon investigation, the trailer is nearly destroyed and pulled upon from the outside with the only evidence being a fired gun, sugar, and a footprint never before seen.  Before heading back and ensuring the girls safety in the ambulance, a high pitch screech fills the air. Causing confusion and the horrified reaction of the girl, it is disregarded as soon as the sound ceases. Now night time, Peterson and Blackburn head to a convenience store before punching out only to see a hole torn from the outside and the store a disaster zone. After quick searching, the body of the owner is found bloody and in a head in the basement with a twisted and bent Winchester rifle.  Peterson leaves in order to make a report while Blackburn stands on sentry duty. However Blackburn does not survive the night for the screech returns prompting Blackburn to go and investigate before meeting a mysterious fate. The mystery finds it way to the government and thus send the FBI Agent Graham, who along with Peterson learn the fate of the convenience store worker. With his body crushed, skull fractured and torn, the report was more shocking upon learning that the man was filled with deadly formic acid. Baffled, Graham and Peterson await the arrival of Dr. Medford and Medford Sr, doctors from the department of agriculture. As the Officer and the Agent follow along with the Doctors, it is soon found that the culprit is beyond anything that was expected for while investigating the field, an 8 foot long foraging ant with aggressive anger finds itself attacking the crew but is soon killed after an entire magazine of a Thompson machine gun is fired into the torso. These ants and their soon to be found Queen bring a threat to the entire world as their reproduction and destructive nature spreads like wild fire with time bring the world to a deadly threat!

Personal Rating - 10 OUT OF 10 = Horrifying and disturbing, THEM! is a thrilling horror film that finds itself in one of the most iconic horror movie slots of all time. With a well rounded cast and horrifyingly realistic models, them brings terror and suspense to a new level. Upon my first viewing at the age of 12, I found myself cowering behind a pillow as the monster from the atomic age threatened the existence of mankind. A must see for any creature feature enthusiast. The suspense is unreal for the time and is one that has yet to be matched.

Movie - The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms.

History - Deemed as “The start of an American genre”, The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms was a monster film that brought moviegoers to the edge of their seats as Ray Harryhausen brings clay to life to form a monster of unimaginable horror. The first of many films to send off the atomic age, The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms was the film that heavily supported the plot line for the film The Deadly Mantis, and the Japanese film Gamera. The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms finds itself grafting from a short story written by the master of Science Fiction, Ray Bradbury. The story of chilly proportions called The Fog Horn, depicts a horrid tail of a nameless creature of monstrous proportions haunts a lone man inside a lighthouse. Together with the magnificent talent of Ray Harryhausen and the disturbing writing of Ray Bradbury, a movie for the ages is created to terrify for decades.

Plot - In the northern arctic circle rest a group of men whose long struggle of atomic testing takes off without a hitch. The atomic bomb detonated without flaw but in its scorching carnage, a prehistoric beast is revived from its frozen prison. The only one seeing it, Thomas Nesbitt (an atomic physicist) falls backwards in shock over the monsters mammoth size and is knocked out. With no one believing him, he soon doubts himself till incident after incident brings Thomas closer and closer to the disturbing conclusion. Seeking aid, he comes across an aged and caring paleontologist Dr. Elson, Eventually believing him and unfortunately falling victim to the demon, Thomas is left with only the aid of the late doctors assistant Dr. Hunter who can only stand in horror as the beast finally makes landfall and unleashes its unholy terror!

Personal Rating - 9 out of 10 = One would be a fool to go into this movie expecting a tacky claymation retro film. The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms is a hauntingly dark and disturbing film of horrors that haunt the past. Holding themes such as brutal mutilation and even the never before conceived plot of disease. The threat of a virulent prehistoric contagion is unique unto its own and is one that leaves a haunting scar in the course of the film. Synced together are skillfully crafted monster effects and destruction moments that bring the horror to life in a movie that will never be forgotten.

However its one ability (Its spear tongue) seems to have monumental power, even able to break through Gamera’s shell.

POWER LEVEL SCALE - 9 OUT OF 10 = Irys holds a strong power that only Gamera has displayed so far. Being able to merge its own power to the fury and anger of a damaged girl, Irys has been able to amplify its strength to the point that Gamera was left panting on the ground close to death. Only through the miracle of a sacred dagger that was fabled to stop the demon in its tracks was able to begin the decent of Irys’s defeat.

POWER LEVEL SCALE - 9 OUR OF 10 = Legion is the Queen on the world destroying force. Named after the arch-angel, Legion is a Kaiju who’s purpose is simply to reproduce by any means necessary. Packing layered silicon plating and an arsonal or weapons, Legion boasts considerable fire power. Able to blast through Gamera’s shell and level Oil Refineries with ease, Legion was only able to be put down by the collective souls of the world to power one final destructive blast, fired by none other then Gamera.

Powers - Agile Swimmer. Can walk on land. Sharp bladed tail and nose. Paralyzing beam fired from the gem between his beak and nose.

First Reported Sighting - 1971.

First Reported Death - 1971 = Killed by Gamera’s flamethrower breath.

POWER LEVEL SCALE - 7 OUT OF 10 = Zigra posses more of an agile menace then one that boast strength. However, what is more powerful then Zigra’s paralyzing ray is Zigra’s intelligence. Being one of the most intelligent monsters in all of Kaiju history, Zigra holds tangible world dominating skills and tactics.

First Reported Death - 1969 =Ancient Relic was thrown through Jiger’s head by Gamera.

POWER LEVEL SCALE - 7.5 OUT OF 10 = Packing an extensive arsonal, Jiger brings it all together with a bizarre weapon. Capable of planting a parasite egg into an enemy, Jiger can completely immobilize her opponents and leave them to spawn a new kaiju. Along with its intense strength and rather sadistic nature, Jiger proves to be one of the strongest Kaiju Gamera has ever faced.

Powers - Blade shaped head. Blade has energy reflective properties. Mind controlled shurieken ninja star blades hidden in head. Excellent jumper.

First Reported Sighting - 1969.

First Reported Death - 1969 = Killed by being pierced by a missile that was soon detonated by Gamera’s flame breath.

POWER LEVEL SCALE - 7 OUT OF 10 = Gamera almost met his match against Guiron. While equipped with a deadly melee based arsenal, Guiron boast incredible strength alone, being able to shake the ground beneath him and bring able to generate enough momentum to slice through the bodies of other kaiju with ease. Only with the luck of two young children is Gamera able to defeat Guiron.
