Chrissy was my first formal Illustrated Interview, and I was really lucky to have her for the project. When we spoke, I immediately noticed a gorgeous drafting desk in the background. I learned it was made of pure oak and that her father had refinished it for her. She wore a comics shirt, so incredibly perfect for our conversation, and we talked. I never met a storyboard artist before.

From a young age, Chrissy knew she wanted to work in animation. Her parents were supportive of her pursuit from a young age, educating her in the fact that animation was a thing you could do. She later went to Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) and holds a degree in sequential art. She now freelances and has quite a bit of commissioned work with Warner Bros. 

I wish I had recorded our talk. I saw a lot of myself in Chrissy: incredibly driven and passionate with a work ethic that’s absolutely bonkers. We talked about impostor syndrome, burnout, and the separation of work from identity; the importance of networking and the challenges of nepotism; the struggle of working within “glamorous” industries when it’s anything but. It was almost like I had a glimpse of myself in an alternate universe, where I decided that comics and storyboarding was what I wanted to do with my professional life. There were points where it felt a little surreal. This could have been me. I could be doing these things.

I thought about our conversation for a long time after we talked. I admire Chrissy for recognizing limits and letting go. That’s something I’m still working on. I think we can all stand to let go once in a while.

Animatic treatment of what is arguably the climax of Taggerung (a Redwall book by Brian Jacques)! So if you’re planning on reading it and haven’t, maybe do that first. ;)

This one has been on the backburner for years, spending most of that time as a series of written story/dialogue beats with timecodes corresponding to where in this song they would fall. For the past couple months I’ve been slowly picking at finally turning it into something people could watch.

Yo, it’s Tuesday and now I have a webcomic: MAQ! 

Grand total of two pages and a functional website.  It begins.

So, uh, this is where I’ve been for the last six weeks. Sixteen pages of pencils! It’s not going as fast as I’d like, but I’m doing boards full-time all week so I’m trying to bang out two to three pages a weekend.

I’m right about halfway to my goal at this point: I want to post the opening sequence (thirteen pages) as one big chunk, then have twenty pages of buffer.  Califata is happening! Or, at least, I’m making an honest go at it. I think I’ve spent the past few years stewing about long term goals and existential fears and idea debt etc etc and something finally just gave. 

Anyway, I hope you’ll forgive me for disappearing for a little while longer. <3 (Sorry about the pixelation, I just want to keep those pages a surprise.)

Hi! I love you're Avatar/Gurren Lagann Sienfeild storyboards. I'm curious about you're process. Do you hand draw you're boards and then lay them out on a storyboard template? Or do you just draw it straight on the template?

Awww, thanks! They were some of my first board for a class at Concept Design Academy. I basically did it old school boarding a la paper (except I cleaned up with pencil, not ink). I thumbnailed out the entire scene on scrap paper, so I knew how many panels each scene would be and could make sure my setups worked throughout.  

I drew the boards directly on paper templates for storyboards. They were vertical layout and either 11x17 or letter size, I’m afraid I don’t recall. I used 3x5 inch sticky notes to lightboxed faces/scenes when I needed to copy a panel on the same page.  They 3x5″ sticky notes were just slightly bigger than the panels. If I had a Truck-In or Pan, I just used a separate sheet of paper and taped it in place.

Later for showing them off online, I scanned them in and typed in my action notes (because, ugh my handwriting). Photoshop is great, because you can’t tell which ones were drawn on yellow post-its. Much much later, I cut the panels up, added them to sound and created an animatic in storyboard pro. I could have done that in premiere, or probably some other video editing software.

These days I board all digital, and it’s really usefully to be able to see it play out in front of me, and be able to add scenes and poses and delete with ease. But boards were done by hand for years! A well staged scene and well acted scene still shows.

I love this assignment! And it’s a great exercise (and can be a portfolio piece as well) to take character designs from one thing and audio from another and mash them together. I hope that helps. :D

Sherlock Hound style nurses! Example of incidental  character design for my class.

Not really an easy style for me and it’s fairly impossible to get character sheets.  I confess. I just really wanted to draw my dog, Ginger as a happy nurse. She’s way too tall, because I also really really needed to draw a pug nurse.
