World’s Smallest Scale Can Measure the Mass of a Single Molecule
This new nanomolecular scale is less than one micron wide at its center. By detecting how vibrations in the central arm change when a single molecule hits it, one solitary group of atoms can be accurately weighed.

Awesome
Mammoth and Mastodon, by Raul Martin.
Interesting sidenote, 'Mastodon', the latin name for a mammoth, literally means 'nipple teeth' due, obviously, to the shape of the animal's teeth. Soooo the thrash metal band Mastodon who I'm sure think of themselves as the baddest of asses, are going around under the title 'NIPPLE TEETH'.
Also I am sorry for my recent lack of activity, I discovered Minecraft, and have thus spent the last few days chopping at blocks with a pickaxe and making houses out of virtual lego. If people are interested I'll post pictures when it's done, it's so awesome I need no excuse to show anybody and everybody.
To make up for my laxity in posting humorous visual information of late, here's a whole bunch.
This crazy looking bastard is called a Barreleye. Living in the deep waters of the Pacific Ocean it has developed a couple of rather ingenius specialisations for dealing with its environment. Looking at the above picture, it may seem that the two dark spots on the front of its head are eyes. In fact, they're olfactory (smell) organs. The barreleye's eyes are the green-blue hemispheres encased in the fighter cockpit-esque transparent dome.
In most species of barreleye the barrel-shaped eyes (if you didn't get the name before, you do now) point directly upwards, protruding from the skull of the fish. They have extremely high concentrations of rod cells, which are the photoreceptor (light-sensitive) cells in eyes which are sensitive to differences in light intensity (cone cells detect colour). The upward-facing eyes are used to detect the sillhouettes of potential prey swimming above the fish. The dome itself is presumed to allow a maximised amount of light to enter the eyes, as well as protecting them from the stinging cells of the jellyfish and medusae which the barreleye steals food from. More awesomely (it's a word shut up) the dome may also act as a second lens, being controlled by muscles in the skull.
Even more fantastic (and this made my day when I read it) is the Brownsnout Spookfish, or Brownsnout Barreleye. This fish (get ready for it) employs a MIRROR in its eyes. A MIRROR. AN ANIMAL. USES A MIRROR. IN ITS EYES. FUCKING. EVOLUTION. I LOVE IT.
The main barrel-shaped eye (on the right) has a supplementary organ called a diverticulum. Whilst the main eye utilises a lens (c) to focus light coming from above onto the retina (d) as we're used to in biology, the diverticulum uses a curved mirror made from layers of reflective cells (b) to reflect light coming from below onto the second retina (a). This effectively allows the fish to see both up and down at the same time.
That's it. I'm done. The world is too cool for me to be a part of it. I'm going to chill in Gale Crater with Curiosity.
