Description
Broad, slashing strokes give powerful shape to this defiant female figure standing with parted legs, a pose more athletic - even pugilistic - than seductive. Her oppositional posturing matched the painter’s contrary aesthetic sensibilities. The Realist painter Henri sought a provocative and timely subject in Salome, the biblical figure who served as her mother’s dutiful pawn in facilitating King Herod’s assassination of John the Baptist. By the late nineteenth century Salome had evolved into a far more aggressive and decadent creature, as witnessed in Oscar Wilde’s notorious play of 1891. That Henri adopted the theme in 1909 suggests his desire to capitalize on Salome’s high currency for controversy, which had been confirmed by the New York Metropolitan Opera’s scandal-provoking performance of Richard Strauss’s Salome (based on Wilde’s play) in 1907. The gleam of amusement that enhances Salome’s haughty expression slyly evokes her complicity in constructing Henri’s own reputation as a radical painter.

gounod's roméo et juliette; leroux only says christine sings some excerpts from it on her first night covering for carlotta and he doesn't clarify further, i like to think she also sang the poison aria at some point (especially considering later in the novel christine tries to kill herself in erik's lair)
the prison scene and final trio from gounod's faust, the piece that makes the parisian audience fall in love with christine as raoul and erik watch. it was also used in the 1990 miniseries!
when christine isn't covering for carlotta, she's playing siebel en travesti, and faites-lui mes aveux is the aria she's singing on the night the chandelier falls when she makes eye contact with raoul and her voice falters - while he starts sobbing violently to everyone else's confusion
the jewel aria is the aria that makes the audience go mad for carlotta
during that same performance of faust, while singing act 3's last duet il se fait tard, carlotta croaks at the end of the line that starts at 2.20
erik sings nuit d'hyménée from gounod's roméo et juliette, the wedding night duet (he gives her a ring that night), as raoul watches christine walk through the mirror after the masked ball
la romanza di desdemona from rossini's othello, which erik (!) sings to christine after bringing her to the lair for the first time
othello and desdemona's duet from rossini's othello, which erik and christine are singing together when she unmasks him (now this is me being pedant, but the masks probably comes off at around 9.18 in this recording, considering leroux has christine react by saying "horror! horror!" which is what desdemona is repeating here, and immediately after erik phisically attacks her in anger much like othello does)
So according to Guillermo del Toro, this scene of encounter between Elizabeth & the Creature is a single soul in separate bodies that finally meet and complete each other.
And the moment when the Creature removes Elizabeth's glove is both romantic and erotic... Both at once. And that, apparently according to Jacob Elordi, is the purest definition of love...
Really, there's no secret that Elizabeth & the Creature have a romantic relationship.
