It's Behcet's Disease awareness day! So you all get to hear a bit about Behcet's and some of my struggle with it. - Behcet's (Beh-Shets) Disease is a rare autoimmune disease that causes chronic inflammation in the blood vessels throughout the body. This disease can turn very serious & even deadly in the blink of an eye. It's a disabling & debilitating disease. The treatment is steroids, immunosuppressants & chemotherapy. - This disease has literally changed my life. I got sick when i was 13 years old. I eventually dropped out of high school (I decided to go back and finish not that long ago, and I have since graduated) because I was just too sick. I've dealt with blood clots, MRSA, frequent infections, etc. My immune system is compromised. Every week I give myself an injection of a drug called Methotrexate. Soon i'll be having a port placed and I'll start Remicade. The goal is to achieve remission. I'm almost 20 & still struggle daily. It's hard living with an illness that's so unpredictable. Every day you wake up not knowing what might happen today, if you might end up in the hospital, what symptoms are going to flare, etc. There's the never ending pain this disease causes, debilitating symptoms, and harsh treatments. There isn't a cure, it's a lifelong illness. It's something i'll deal with for the rest of my life.
