I do not "count my carbs." I do not think CARB CONSCIOUS. I don't even monitor my TYPE of carb intake. I GUESS my carbs, and if I go hyperglycemic, I RAGE BOLUS AND I KILL MYSELF.

they've gotta come up with a version of the "instead of hating your body, try to appreciate it for all it does for you" advice that doesn't collapse in the context of disability/chronic illness. three of my organs flat out do not work so forgive if i'm maybe not all that appreciative
"you know what my diabetic patient needs? a surprise and a headache and a bunch of additional bureaucracy to wade through to fix my little oopsie" - my doctor

also want to add I was hoping that jumping rope would help bring down a high blood sugar and instead it... removed my source of insulin 👍🤦♂️

Holy shit.
hey, if you have a sensor lodged in your arm, read this and make sure it's working OK

I felt like this article had more information and the product name, FreeStyle Libre 3, is right there in the link to maybe alleviate some anxiety or find the right users.
I think if providers laugh at us while we’re explaining our concerns we should be able to turn them into piñatas for precisely 40.3 seconds
Let’s learn the meaning of that funny word that everyone else uses before adding it to our daily vocabulary <3
diabetic good luck charm!!
eating sugar is not a primary cause of diabetes. eating junk food is not a primary cause of diabetes. when you make jokes about "getting diabetes" over sugary, junk filled food, you are enforcing stereotypes that end with diabetics developing deadly eating disorders or experiencing medical abuse and neglect. Yes, it is that deep. Stop making diabetes jokes, you look like an uneducated bigot
Health insurance is infuriating for so many reasons but one thing I really hate is how they can change what medications they'll cover (and therefore allow you to take) at any moment, completely independent of what you or your doctor wants. And not only does this cause disruptions to care, sometimes being forced onto an inferior product or one that straight up doesn't work, there's also no guarantee that it won't change again in a few months. I used the same brand of test strips for about 16 years and then my insurance abruptly switched to another. I then used that one for a few years, until about 4 months ago when my (new) insurance switched me back to the brand I'd grown up on. Okay, fine, I guess, at least I still have the meters that go with that brand. But now they're switching it AGAIN and they'll only cover a brand of test strips that I've never used in my life, meaning I also have to go buy a new meter. And how long is that going to last before they change their minds again?? You don't think it's hard enough to be diabetic already without being yanked around like this?
So in a person without adrenal problems, the physiological stress response triggers a flood of cortisol. In someone with adrenal insufficiency, what takes its place? I mean I know we’re supposed to manually substitute cortisol when stressed by updosing, but physiologically what’s happening to us without that system activating properly? Does adrenaline spike instead? We know the effects of chronically activated stress response is very hard on the body and sets you up for various medical problems; what happens to someone with adrenal insufficiency who’s chronically stressed? Can’t be good but it wouldn’t be driven by excess cortisol production
Just because someone else who has the same illness as you can work full time or do more than you can, doesn’t mean you can or should do more. Even people with the same chronic illness have different symptoms and severity levels. Try not to view other chronically ill people’s lifestyles as “proof” that you should be doing more. Don’t feel guilty for doing what’s right for your body.
man sometimes I think back to the early days of covid when so many people at least made a show of caring about each other’s health and taking basic precautions. and I did think wow if one good thing comes of this maybe it’ll be greater awareness of disease transmission and public health issues. as a rly wild fantasy maybe even somewhat better disability awareness / inclusion / accessibility. and instead it seems like between the rampant misinformation conspiracy theories and official policies of ‘back to normal’ giving carte blanche to apathy we’ve ended up worse than we started off. not just with public health infrastructure shredded (which it is) and its credibility in the gutter (which it is) but also with ppl acting like no one ever taught them to cover their fucking cough or even try to avoid sharing their every infection. sure, ppl have always been going places while sick but it used to be considered kind of, idk, gauche? rude? risky? this epi joke has been around for ages - “how far can a sneeze travel? thousands of miles if it’s on a plane!” - but it’s incredibly galling to go through a global crisis in which we DID learn and practice, if briefly, if grudgingly, some of the ways that we could be less sick, and then to have seemingly most ppl decide actually that was annoying and inconvenient and they don’t rly care anyway. and don’t start with ‘aw well some ppl Have to go out when they’re sick—’ you and I both know I’m not talking abt low wage workers with absolutely no other option. the callousness toward illness and the fatalism in not even trying to avoid it actually makes me want to throttle ppl. and then I’m like well of course it went this way. how could it be different. what was I thinking

Gov. Gavin Newsom said Thursday that California will begin selling affordable insulin under its own label on Jan. 1, nearly three years after he first announced a partnership to sell state-branded generic drugs at lower prices.
But California won’t be the only state making lower-cost insulin available. The nonprofit Civica said it will also distribute its economical diabetes medication to pharmacies nationwide. California began partnering with Civica in 2023 for its “CalRx” brand of insulin and put $50 million toward its development, the company said.
