The day had already been planned out, moment by moment, condensed in a mental schedule that Jeanie plans to follow as closely as possible. Strict upbringing aside, she would tell whoever questions why someone would possibly plot out a date by the hour, that schedules and lists were easy to follow; and they made her focus rest on something other than how nervous she was. Fidgeting had never been allowed in her childhood, it was a display of unease and lack of attention; but with no eyes on her, fidget she did.
First it had been her hair, finding even restyling her waves into loose curls gave them more volume and more bounce, but her hopes that it might frame her face in just the right way were lost in her agitated state. It felt as if no matter how she has twisted and pinned it up or let the locks hang loose and free, nothing seemed to exactly fix the aesthetic she craves for the day. She wanted supple and sweet, carefree.
All she sees in her mirror is a someone who is too high strung for her own good with a jittery gleam in pale blue eyes, a woman who can barely handle the idea of a formal date, terrified the outcome could be tipping delicate scales out of place.
She wonders, when watching her reflection apply a layer of subtle and lavish red to her lips, if that was what really mattered. Tipping scales. How she looked.
For once, maybe it was more prevalent to remember how she felt, now that Future has taken steps to come forward and admit their feelings.
It had been mutual, the brunette reminds herself with one last touchup in the vanity. Mutual, and a long time coming.
By the time the knock at the door comes, she has put herself together in a way that just-so sates her worries, dressed for the part and holding her clutch purse in the living room, sliding her phone inside the purse and quickly making her way to the front door, putting on a genuine smile. A twists and jerks of locks allows her to turn the knob, and sheโs thankful for the height her heels give her, only having to crane her neck a tad to have her smile turn from excited to bashful as sheโs presented with a handful of peonies.
โ Theyโre beautiful,ย โ She breathes, momentarily starstruck, reaching out to gather them carefully, her nerves smothered unknowingly by Futureโs gift. In taking the flowers, one hand holds the bouquet, the other their hand, giving it a small squeeze while allowing her to hold a lot a small tug, wordlessly taking them to join her inside the flat. โ Thank you, I love them.ย โ
Future is taken inside her home, a place they had never exactly been a stranger to even before they began dating, and when Jeanie lets go of their hand and closes the door, she leads them to her kitchen counter where a vase of (admittedly wilted) pink roses sit, and the exchange of flowers begins.
โ Itโs good to see you, โ The brunette begins sweetly, taking out the roses and setting them to the side, ignoring how their tips dribbled water over the quartz counter top, taking the vase in her free hand and passing Future to get into her kitchen and dump the water out into her sink, refilling it enough for the peonies, bringing the bouquet to rest inside the vase moments later when itโs placed back in the same spot the roses had once been before she, regretfully, tosses the older flowers in her trash. โ I missed you, Pragueโs far away you know. โ
Turning, blue-grey hues pin her partner down before a hand reaches out, finding its place on their waist while she draws in closer. โ How long are you back this time, do you wager? A day? A week? โ
Sheโs no stranger to Futureโs erratic schedule, just as Future was no stranger to her own. They were at the beck and call for the same cause, just in different sanctions of the agency, and while one took comfort at a desk, the other found their calling in the field. Their moment together now might only be found again in two weeks time, maybe later if the Checquy had anything to say about it, so her question is as sincere as it is teasing, truly wondering just how long theyโll have together this time before Future is whisked off across the continent and Jeanie is left to sit idly at the Rookery waiting on a text or a once in a while phone call.
Her other hand reaches up, laying at the juncture of their neck and shoulder, thumb gently tracing their jaw. โ Longer than a week, maybe? โ
๐ โ OH, THE HILARITY! An amused gasp escapes him, hand pressed to his chest to exaggerate feigned surprise. Though, if the smirk playing on his lips is any telltale, Jerome doesnโt believe a word. Fingers idly fidget with his magic worm, its neon orange fur a stark contrast to Jeromeโs blue-gray coat.
ย โ Now, I ainโt callinโ baloney, bearcat, butโ uhโฆ โย A knowing glare shifts from Jeanie to the worm. Within a nonchalant shrug and a mere twitch of his brows, Jerome wets his mouth slits. โ All โm sayinโ is thatโs exactly what youโd say if you were jelly. โ
ย ย ย He is quick to follow it up with faux sympathy, one hand releasing the worm in favor of clamping down on her shoulder. โ Hey, I feel โya! โ His tone grows softer. โ If some fruit cake had nudged my lovebird the way that slut did your orgy-in-a-bottle, Iโd sure be pissed too! โ Eyes roll to the ceiling. โ Iโve had their head for less. Anywho, Iโฆdo happen to have a spare silly string on hand.. โ Of course it is not just any silly string, but a highly acidic one.
Even from the corner of her eyes she can feel the preening gaze of the clown resting on her, Jeromeโs โsugar sweetโ attempt at curing the sour expression set about her features of a frowning lip and suspicious glare doing little to settle the predicament she found herself in, knowing full well that should she cause the scene shes just dying to make that the ride home would be less than ideal.
Yet, her possessiveness reared its ugly head and caution slowly began to distance itself, the arm of which a gloved hand is clamped down upon shifts to cross over her ribs as the other raises glossy acrylics high so as to allow one needle like point to tickle pearly whites when she bares her teeth for the idle act of irritation. A tap or two passes, and in between the seconds she takes to ponder what move to make, or if there was one to make at all, Gestaltโs platinum hair appears to dip out of the reach of said fruit cake that had originally drawn the collective attention of Jeanie and Jerome.
Itโs satisfying to have Gestalt immediately take some distance, their disinterest obvious in placating someone else's needs that weren't her own, elating a small tug at the edge of her lips that spread into a smirk, her hand dropping to effectively cross her arms almost proudly.
โ Seems as though the situation fixed itself, Jerome. โ She replies in an almost sing song sort of tone, watching Gestalt mingle into the crowd around them and not even risk a glance in the direction of a girl who, although attractive and well put together in her own right, seemed to take the rejection with little grace and threw a nasty little look across the floor at the platinum blonde ignoring her existence.
โ But... if youโre still offering that silly string, I think Iโm willing to partake. โ
The beginnings of ire registering itself upon her features offered him satisfaction that his words have made their mark. Much better. The sooner she understands that she knows close to nothing to even begin bargaining with him from the position of equals, the easier it will be. Faded eyes, a sick contrast with the red veins prominently projected against pale skin, tracked her every move as she approaches. Patient. Ever watchful.
When prompted with the question of whether or not this was an exchange, Jeremiah offers a shrug, insouciant in nature. ย
โIt could be. Or it could not. Frankly, I havenโt decided yet.โ
She wasnโt too far off the mark with her presumptions. After all, Jeremiah has the energy bombs engaged with a relay system. Though the blasts may seem far from one another and at random, there is a systematic pattern at work, should one care to delve deeper. Unfortunately for her, she hasnโt yet to grasp his meaning that โeverything must goโ. It was essential after all, to further morph Gotham into the dark city that Bruce deserved.
โConvoluted and troublesome- as one would expect from an individual belonging to the criminal families.โ As he expected, his methods may beโฆbarbaric to some but they are undoubtedly more decisive, less of a risk and cleaner. โStill. I do see the schematics behind your ideas though we both know youโd have set forth with the plan if you were certain that youโd be able to stay on top of everything that could possibly go awry.โ
The engineer turned terrorist paused in his ruminating to examine his conversation partner closely, eyes seeming to affix on an unseen goal as he forms his own decision. Finally, Jeremiah snaps his fingers. In the settling dust, a squeak of rusty hinges can be heard when a door swings open from the far right corner of the room. A silhouette of a clothed jester emerges from the shadows, waiting.
โHappy news, Miss Gareson. Iโve decided that youโll be one of the key individuals I want to witness the emergence of my vision for this cityโฆand the emergence of the Dark Knight. As such, itโs in our common interest to keep you alive.โ
Jeremiah directs her attention towards the mysterious person by the door.
โCome now, we best hurry. After all, this building has only two minutes more before it too will be demolished. Follow Eccoโs lead, if you please.โ
Jeremiahโs remarks sting at first, but sheโs grown used to a prick of venom in her veins ever since she delved deeper into a world she once barely knew. He makes a point though, that if she was more secure in claiming a choke hold on Gothamโs political figures and payroll that she would have already snatched up the opportunity before they had crossed paths.
Too much time wasted scheming, not enough time enacting what strings could have been pulled viciously taut should she have given the true interest and investment to her earlier sentiments and plots - she sees that in this moment, but itโs far too late now that it is Jeremiah who stands proud and tall with the power she (an other liken to her situation) wished for.
The snap of his fingers brings her back from private thoughts, her lashes fluttering and eyes slimming to suspicious slits when considering the creak and cry of the rust encrusted door opening to reveal a silhouette she did not recognize.
โ Glad to see the clown motif wasn't just a one-hit wonder. โ She thinks to herself wryly, a jester stepping forward to be seen and leaving Jeanie to mull over the familiar costume choice, wondering what could have been should the first clown prince hadnโt taken to the grave once more. A thought of possible resurrection prods her musings, but his twin, the one who was so very much alive and causing chaos in Jeromeโs absence, rouses her attention once more.
Immediately she is puzzled. A fated Dark Knight? Of whom she would witness rise?
God almighty the Valeskaโs were a theatrical bunch, but with a time stamp on the building they occupied presented, Jeanie doesn't even hesitate to come forward to the door and its awaiting entourage. her shoulders stiff and words stern.
โ I accept your invitation to live, Mr. Valeska. But we have more to discuss, I hope you know. โ
God only knows where this Starter is at but I sure donโt: [ NOT ACCEPTING ]
Her returning sentiment is little more than a playful scoff paired with a short roll of her eyes that isnโt shown as her back is to her partner, the soft clink of her ring finger clasping white gold against the short neck of a brandy snifter heard thereafter the informants amusement. Two glasses are filled, one just a tad more so than the other, and while she considers dipping out of the billiard room to grab ice for the drinks, she decides against it and replaces the snifterโs glass top before turning on her heels and making her way to where Jerome awaits by an emerald green lined mahogany pool table.
The queue is lined up for play, stripes and solids glossy with fresh polish underhead of warm lighting dotted across wood ingrained walls of a similar color to its furnishings and fixed just above the table where she arrives, offering the redhead a crystal glass that was an extra nip awaiting consumption.
โ You canโt get jealous of me upkeeping my contact list, Jerome.ย โ Glass in hand, she wanders past the game which is ready to begin, her focus held on what she says even when her free hand skims the cue sticks before plucking one off the wall fixture it was once attached too and she resumes her speech. โ Besides. Youโre still the best at what you do; why would I ask you to go fetch for something well under your pay grade when a rat can do the same thing for less trouble and less money? You like the action and the mayhem, not knocking on doors and skulking around the docks in search of packages or loose ends, it benefits us both that youโre not the only man I require the services of, donโt you think? โ
Jeanie is aware her words seem like sweet talk, the truth drizzled in honey so i its easier to swallow. Jerome is a useful ally as far as she is concerned, and while the brunette does genuinely consider him to be one of her greatest assets and she would gladly have him taking care of the matters Gestalt could not, based purely on his efficiency - he was a recurring detriment to the aspect that was of considerate consequence to her business at the end of the day.
People pleasing.ย
Not that she blamed him, with the popular platform allotted to him and the whole โresurrected from the deadโย nonsense being the basis of what had built Jeromeโs sensationalistic stage persona over the period of time they had become acquainted, he didnโt owe casual banter nor a polite facade to her colleagues as she did on principle. He was too far above that now and in between their talks and co-conspiring behind others, she had come to acknowledge that confidence and way he carried himself with some muddled envy she veiled as muted surrender to the awe of her partnerโs domineering disposition in Gothamโs underworld.ย
Shame it forced a buffer between them and all that could have been aside from a couple double-edged blades hidden behind their smiles and a careful two step around just who was in control in what that had made together. Were they friends? Business partners? Who was to say.
Burgundy lips tug until they show the scarcest hint of teeth, the cue pole balanced in her hand tapping against the floor as Jeanie regards him with keen hues of murky grey-blue, the other hand raising her crystal glass to frame parted lips. โ You can break. โ
Thin trails of heavy cigar smoke linger in the air, hanging like a haze about the shoulders of a man slunk in an armchair that has been crafted to fit his stature comfortably, one sleek leg clothed in pressed navy slacks thrown over the knee of the other, ringed knuckles of an unoccupied hand tapping in a slow but steady rhythm against warm mahogany wood fill the room with an uneasy flare, which matches the mood of a desk draped in papers seemingly presented as an unorganized messed. The stacks are jumbled, leafed between folders and envelopes, keen hazel hues snapping rapidly between what is drawn out before the dark haired man who leans across it all and stubs the butt of a fat cigar out in a clean crystal ashtray.
He sucks against the back of pearly whites once his back hits the leather of his chair, the sound accented by the unfurling of one pink tongue that runs against his teeth when they are bared as he speaks.
โ The accounts aren't adding up. Someone is skimming the books. โ Nimble fingers leave their roost of mahogany armrests to dip under the exposed matching navy vest of the Informant. Through the little motion a simple metal case no larger than the palm of his hand is procured from its breast pocket and opened, his collection of toothpicks displayed before one is plucked from the bunch and perched between his lips and held by pointed incisors once he continues with a stern tone. โ Tell me why it is that youโve let this happen when youโre supposed to man the books now, not me, and yet you expect me to always be the one to catch it before its too late, Gestalt. โ

[///OOC] Jeanie talks a lot of smack for having been in a co-leader of a youth group at her church back in her high school days while also having been the debate club president at a private catholic school
โMaybe it was a bit of venting,โ He acquiesced with a shrug, if only to buy himself a few minutes to process- he knew her face, he knew he knew her face, but the connections were too slow, which built panic, which then translated to frustration, that then-
โOH!โ He suddenly snapped his fingers, straightening up suddenly to point at her. It took an embarrassment filled moment as he realized his gesture, cleared his throat, and wove a hand,ย โRight, right! You came for meetings at the Manor-โ Mayoral or Underworld?ย Probably Underworld. Made sense. Right. โOf course I know you, Miss- uhโฆโ Name, name, hadnโt she just said it? Ed was screaming internally.ย
โ Gareson, โ she finished for him smoothly, giving a proper inclination of her head and muting her smile so as to keep from showing too much teeth in her moment of amusement. โ Jeanie Gareson. Donโt worry about it much Mr. Nygma, I had made it my job to let my name escape people at the best of times up until recently. โ
There was no need to deep dive into the question of whether or not Ed was suffering from a lapse of time and space, his memory sparse and unclear being proof enough to the brunette that his time stuck in the ice age had done some damage.
Sheโd have to mention that to Oswald the next time she saw him, she figured.
โ But it really has been quite a while, nearly a year, since we last spoke. โ Keen eyes took into account the expression on the manโs face, taking a bold step forward to the side, as if she was thinking of taking her leave. โ So again I wonder, what is a man like you doing nosing around down here? โ
โAh, well,โ He cleared his throat and straightened his jacket, glancing to the bar, the stairs that lead up to where he was supposed to deliver the medication, and then down again.ย Errands could wait.ย โActually, I pretty much run things around here these days.โ After a moment, he added,ย โTechnically from aโฆ second in commandย capacity-โ A comedic sidekick at best, he left it unsaid although the flicker of embarrassment washed over his face briefly,ย โWhy donโt I buy you a drink and we canโฆ catch up?โ At that, he tried to give her the best debonair smile he could, but considering his general disarray, it wasnโt much.ย
A courteous smile is given in return to Edโs proposal and smile that was too many teeth to be true, a sure sign his seemingly skittish self was trying to compose itself with some effort. The nod given is more curt than anything, the purpose for her inherent acceptance nothing but based on playful curiosity for herself alone, figuring a little detour on her way home was nothing that would be cause for concern with who waited for her back at their residence (though she reminds herself to send a text the moment a drink is in her hand).
โ Cocktails and catching up sounds fair, Mr. Nygma. But dont think Iโll ask you to put out for a tab, โ Her eyes glitter, hints of coyness simmering under her tongue. โ I can cover a few drinks, after all. โ
Composure was always key when sharing a table with her business partner and those affiliated with his person, as a slip of the tongue or too-fast blink of an eye could insinuate hesitance and that fine lather of disgust that was admittedly bubbling in the informants gut the longer ivories were tickled and the slideshow progressed into the bizarre and unsettling content. Jeromeโs mantra could arguabley coincide with accepting the unacceptable, the macabre, the demented, and the unsightly - all of which she could haphazardly duct tape across this little show sheโs been called to sit poised and pretty before, the wrenching in her gut as a secondary storyline unfolded on the projector screen the longer she sat.
It starts out simple and sweet, and though she should be accustomed to the slippery slope of twisted infatuation, she is at first too distracted by a melody which would have once been heard in her own home to even register what she seeโs until it is far too late. She knows the keys and anticipates the music as much as the masked pianist does, her own sort of link to the song whipping up fragments of precious memories that soon are thrown to the wind when her attention is garnered by evidence of what she assumes to be borderline obsession and clear intrusion toward a mystery woman Jeanie can only assume would feel a similar horror to her own if aware of the production reel she currently watched with a rapt, if not unconsciously intrigued, gaze.
She wonders, the longer the show goes on, how the poor girl fell into the pianist's path. Lilies and lavender speak of something delicate and refinement; something precious and true. Even with the deep shadows carved across his mask she can see the artistic application rendered across the emotionless marble-white surface placed over his face, and thoughts of the effort and devotion put into his performance are soured in her mind by the devote invasive nature flashed above their heads while Jerome basks in the madness and Jeri is all but silent, for now, presumably enjoying what she sees as well. Itโs all unorthodox, it leaves her unsettled (as it should), and it reminds her that not all love is comparable to others, that she is lucky she hasnโt faced what the pianists fixation has, and silently she wishes for the slideshow to come to its uneasy close and for her to down more liquid courage to get through the rest of her evening.
Itโs Jeriโs quiet offer that pulls Jeanie from her stupor of unrealistic trepidation and allows her eyes to wrench themselves from the performance. Her mouth tries to give a proper response, but to her surprise, sheโs found that a foul bout of cottonmouth has caught her off guard. Swallowing hard and allowing the smallest cough so not as to overreach the dramatic hunch of silence, she nods with a hard blink, as if the simple action could wash away what sheโs seen that night. โ Yes, please. โ

" Here comes trouble. " Trevor says as he says Jeanie enter the bar. He servers the drink he was pouring and walks over to her usual spot at the bar. " The usual or something diffrent? " he asks as he leans in.
โ Different, โ Approaching on the height of her heels and short pass of her clutch from under her arm to her hands, Jeanie undoes the gold clasp and glances down, seemingly searching for her card to start a tab.
A card does reveal itself once it is offered between a two fingered point in the bartender's direction, however, it is not the sleek black American Express that Trevor would have grown acquainted with thus far. Instead, it is simple paper and ink; a business card?
Jeanie edges closer to the counter, flipping her gift over and so it flashes an address indented in fine print lettering.ย โ Youโre invited to a party Iโm throwing this coming weekend. โ
โNot that drinks arenโt great and all, they definitely are,โ Ruth peers across the table at the woman curiously,ย โbut I was hoping to ask you something a bit more serious.โย
Jeanie has given both herself and the young woman a much needed gift of privacy and tucked them securely behind a scarlet velvet curtain, the Red Room Loungeโs music and patrons alike muffled by the shield, but even still the informant wonders if eyes who perhaps followed her guest to the booth they sat in attempt to pry past the fabric and question the same thing the informant wishes to know, curious to know why a Wayne has crossed into uncharted territory such as hers.
โ Then why are you here, if not to abuse the privilege of underage drinking Iโve allotted you? โ For Ruthโs benefit and hers alone, Jeanie decides against lighting a cigarette, despite how the nicotine would be a relief to cure the impatience she feels riding inside her. So many questions to ask, Jeanie muses past a stilled expression of perfect composure, but itโs really up to the prodigal daughter to lead the chase for them to flow organically.
