It was half past eleven, and the train carriage was quiet. Arthur was leaning against the glass barrier by the door, his earbuds in his ears and his rucksack on his lap. Florence Welch crooned in his ear, sang about kissing and fists. The cuffs of his maroon jumper folded around his fingers, and he slowly fiddled with a loose thread. Outside, the train rattled along in the dark, passing stations and stopping. Arthur was tired, and eleven stops away from home and his bed.

Bed.

It was all he wanted. He couldn’t wait to go home to his little flat, strip his clothes off, and curl up under the duvet. Perhaps he’ll have a little cry. Yes, that sounded like a good idea. He’ll have a little cry, allow himself to be pathetic (just for a moment), and then he’ll pick himself up, pop the kettle on, and sort his life out as soon as he had his tea.
