Sun, Blake and the awesomeness of friendship

Whether you ship Blake x Sun, bumblebee, or any other ship, the way Sun and Blake were parlayed into friendship was unique and I thought, very telling. It makes him a more nuanced and complex character to have him end as Blake’s friend and not her romantic partner. He’s a faunas, she’s a faunas, they’re both fighters with a lot in common—it may seem like the perfect fit for a romantic partner. But, isn’t it also the perfect fit for a best friend?

In the beginning I thought Blake x Sun might be where CRWBY was going, and I don’t deny Sun probably started out having romantic intentions with Blake. However, once he realizes that what Blake needs is a friend, he steps up and is just that. He listens to her, he doesn’t judge her, he sticks by her when things get dangerous. He doesn’t try and tell her how to handle Ilia, even though he disagrees with her characterization of her at first.

There were several instances he could’ve illustrated romantic feelings and he didn’t. When he was stabbed, he could’ve told her he did it because he’s in love with her. When he followed her on the boat, when he announced he was staying in Menagerie for as long as needed. What makes Sun awesome, is that he’s a character we don’t see enough in media. He’s the guy friend who accepts friendship not as a consolation prize, or as a standby position, but as a valuable relationship. He’s the guy friend who directs Blake back to her team, not because he realizes he won’t get to have a relationship with her, but because he truly wants her to figure things out and be with the people she needs.

Not only that, but I don’t doubt Blake potentially, initially had some romantic interest in Sun. However, as the relationship changes Sun shows how much he cares about her, not by being angry about ‘mixed signals’ but by accepting her choice and respecting her need to work through her confusion. He knows her feelings weren’t malicious, and it doesn’t change that he cares about her as more than a romantic partner. And Blake doesn’t ‘apologize’ to him for her confusion, because she knows he wasn’t demanding anything of her, which goes to show the kind of genuine individual he is.

He truly is a genuine person who only wants what’s best for the people he cares about—even if what they want isn’t what he wants. Regardless of who you ship, or how you feel about any ship, Sun Wukong is unique character in media that often takes female/straight male friendships as the first precursor to romance and not the destination. 

I don’t feel the writing in RWBY is one way or the other: Blake x Sun was sort of real at one point, and now Bumblebee is and that’s what makes the whole dynamic that much more interesting and real. Feelings are multi-layered and confusing, and you can move from romance to friendship or friendship to romance at many points in a close relationship. The show is about the bonds people forge when they genuinely care about others, not for what they can gain, but for their own intrinsic value.

P.S. I fully realize I may be jumping into a pool of sharks with this post, but I just really like Sun Wukong, and love the RWBY Fandom too much not to share my appreciation of him.

tl:dr Sun Wukong is a genuine Nice Guy and he deserves all the high fives.

Hey do y'all know of any artists that draw RWBY art and do commisions? I wanna get some art of my RWBY character done but I don't have any art of her in the first place and it's been kinda hard to find someone who doesn't need/prefer visual reference.

I’ve been waiting to see if any other mod might have a better idea, but it seems not so I’ll bite. I only really have any experience with artists who do character art, not RWBY specifically. It might help to broaden your search like that, a character is a character, it doesn’t matter if the artist draws RWBY

In terms of visual reference, you really need to appreciate how important that is. If you just describe something verbally, that doesn’t give them much. You don’t need art of your character specifically. Or art at all, really, it could be photos, videos, whatever. But if you have a picture and can say “this is what I imagine the jacket looks like” or “ignore the rest of the armour, I just want the shoulder plate” or something, that goes MILES to help the artist

Also be prepared to pay up, commissions can be expensive! You get what you pay for
