I commissioned some art for my fic Age of Intolerance of little Kass and his teacher Olin from @chxxpers ! She was amazing to work with and put so much thought into the character designs!
Here is a little segment from chapter 2 that goes along with the art (cw: panic attack, allusion to trauma, orphaned Kass)
Kass did not track how much time had passed since he had come to be in Kakariko Village. He spent much of it writing and trying to read, though he did not have much luck with the reading. Instead he transcribed poems he did not understand onto scraps of paper that Olin had trimmed from the pages he hand-bound into a book.
He had not yet ventured further into the village than the edge of Olin’s garden. From there, he could see people in the steppes below tending their own gardens. To Kass, they looked so like the Hylians who had run his tribe out of the fishing village that he returned to his hammock to hide until his heart stopped pounding.
“Kass.”
Still worried the inside of his throat might tear and bleed if he made a sound, Kass looked up as he always did in response to his teacher.
“I want you to come down to the shop with me,” Olin said.
Fearing this might be some sort of test, Kass nodded slowly. He would show Olin that he could go out into the world and remain on his best behaviour. It wouldn’t do to be cast out of the only place he knew of to stay.
“Many of the people here have not seen a Rito—at least not since The Calamity. They may stare, but it is curiosity, not malice,” Olin warned him.
Kass accepted the scarf which Olin handed him to keep the cool wind at bay. As Olin slid the door open, Kass blinked against the comparatively harsh light. Bracing himself, he took a deep breath and followed Olin out into the frightening wideness of the world, through the herbs and vegetables in the patch of garden in front of his house, and down the path through the village.
Olin had been right; the villagers did look at him for just a little too long. Children stared openly, though their parents whispered at them that it was poor manners to do so, and all the while, the adults sneaked furtive glances at him. Kass fixed his eyes straight ahead, trying to ignore the stares he felt as he followed as closely to his teacher as he dared.
When they arrived at the shop, Olin approached the young woman at the counter and Kass stood stupidly between the tables of produce, unsure of what he should be doing. At the market in the fishing village, he and his mother would look at the fish and the fruit, so he stared intently at the goat butter, never handling anything as he had been taught, and trying hard not to remember his mother in public.
At the touch of a sticky hand up on his wing, he started and turned to see a small, white-haired girl with sparkling brown eyes, smiling at him.
“You’re it,” she giggled.
Kass didn’t know what that meant and backed into a table in horror. A basket of purple innards rocked off the table and spilled to the floor with a terrible organic squelch. The sound startled Kass—sounded too like other terrible sounds he tried not to remember—and he threw himself beneath the table, covering his head with his wings and curling into a ball.
A terrible noise filled Kass’s ears. He didn’t realize that it was he who was screeching and crying until he found Olin sitting beside him on the ground, the shop empty around them. He stopped and tried to catch his breath as soon as he realized what had happened and looked up to see Olin’s remorseful face.
“I’m sorry. I pushed you too soon,” said Olin.
Kass just wiped the tears from his face. When Olin held out his arm Kass reached out to his teacher, and let Olin lift him from under the table and carry him back to the cottage. His head upon Olin’s shoulder, he was too exhausted to do more than wonder if he was too old to be carried—certainly his father would have said he was. He couldn’t halt the tears that welled up when he thought of his father.
While he wept Olin held him close and stroked his head, saying nothing as Kass pressed his face into his shoulder. When Kass had finally cried himself to exhaustion, Olin laid him down in his hammock and tucked his blanket around him.
Despite how little Uramichi had brought with him to their dorm room, the small cot seemed to consistently brim with his presence; the thin navy sheets were always tucked in, a matching doona straightened out across the mattress as an admittedly uncomfortable pillow sat fluffed on top. In fact, the only sign of life seemed to be a slightly worn baby blue blanket that, when not in use, was always folded on the foot of the bed without a crease insight.
Everything had to be neat to a fault; as if no one lived in there at all. So surely he would figure out that Tobikichi had made himself home amongst the silken sheets. Uramichi would know his personal space had been invaded.
Edward was not much more than a statement piece at the Midford manor; a son who was far too typical to be seen as unique despite all that he hid in his shadow.
Maybe that made Edward sound drab, but Aster couldn’t think of him as such.
To him, Edward was simply beautiful.

To be looked at as if he was every bit tempting, by someone like Langa meant that Reki was the 5-star, 7 course meal that made everything else on the buffet seem hopelessly tasteless.
Reki barely felt like the crumbs under the table half the time, so to him Langa’s more ravenous affections were simply a unique way of understanding love - a way that whilst Reki didn’t share, he could still interpret, and no matter what way he looks at it; Langa really does see him as the most important thing in his life.
Sometimes, you have to take creative measures in shutting up your roommates.
But maybe making sure it doesn't turn them on would be a little bit smarter to do...
