Notes from F5 - Dispatch 3. Last weekend I had the privilege and honor of attending F5 right here in NYC. F5 is a conference hosted by motionographer.com bringing together creative types with a proclivity for motion and storytelling through various mediums. The mix was deliciously eclectic and opened me up to different ways to both tell and experience stories. Writing about what they said seemed akin to singing all the songs from a great concert to someone who wasn’t there. Instead, I tried to boil everything down to a digestible stew. Here’s the last batch of what stuck with me from F5:
Julia Pott illustrator/animator - Make what you want to make and put it on the internet. People will see it and pay you to do it for them, too. - Animation was a way for her to sit in her room and make something all her own. Really nice sentiment about making something happen out of imagination and sketching…and lots and lots of frames. http://www.juliapott.com/ Patrick Moberg creator of Dots and Two Dots - Experiment, collaborate, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. - Being terrified seems to be an integral part of trying something new, but once you start, and it’s working, you can’t stop. http://weplaydots.com/twodots/
Block & Tackle motion designers - Hey they did the opening titles! https://vimeo.com/125317556 - Hey they showed us their project files for the opening titles! Always rad to see files. - “It’s nice to be nice”…but not passive aggressive with your direction. That’s not nice. - “Fix your mistakes when you find them.” - “Shut up and get in the pool.” Don’t waste your energy on bitching. - “You’re only as good as the last thing you’ve made.” - Your conscious ::shudder:: - “You’ll figure it out!” Don’t stress. Trust yourself. - “You can’t win if you don’t play.” - Grandma Gwyenn http://www.blockandtackle.tv/home/ Rama Allen director - “Seek the fear” - Remember your first reaction to a brief, that’s the gut feeling you want to feel when the project is complete. That doesn’t mean your first idea is the best. Your first feeling is the best. - Build a playlist for each project and listen to it the whole time. - HAVE FAITH - In the end, the project doesn’t have to look like what you originally thought, but it should FEEL like what you originally felt. - “Feel the fear and do it anyway.” http://www.themill.com/ Dr. Janet Iwasa molecular biologist - This is the coolest lady I have ever seen speak. - Animation, it’s for science, too! - Somehow I now understand how proteins interact on the surface of my cells. http://biochem.web.utah.edu/iwasa/projects.html GMUNK 3D motion designer/director - Loves Pinterest - Make stuff you’re really interested in and put it on the internet. The work will come. - GET EXCITED. Then he melted faces with this: https://vimeo.com/75260457

Writing about what they said seemed akin to singing all the songs from a great concert to someone who wasn’t there. Instead, I tried to boil everything down to a digestible stew. Here’s the first batch of what stuck with me from F5: Scott Carrier writer/radio producer - Write how you talk. - Writing for him starts with an image. Build on the image and find your Beginning, Middle, and End. - Has “Home of the Brave” podcast that I am listening to now. Check out his podcast: http://homebrave.com/ And his latest book: http://books.google.com/books/about/Prisoner_of_Zion.html?id=36nGAgAAQBAJ Erin Sarofsky owner/creative director of Sarofsky - “Make something really fucking cool out of what you have.” Just because the work doesn’t seem sexy doesn’t mean you can’t make it a kick-ass project. - A good producer makes the designers life and the project so much better. Amen! - The balance between Art and Commerce is delicate and hard to get right. http://sarofsky.com/ Giant Ant motion design/animation firm 1. Never miss a deadline - it’s about trust and respect. 2. Don’t be a jerk - no one wants to work with jerks. 3. Put love in your work - it shows. - Work and life are two things, keep them balanced. http://www.giantant.ca/work/ Antfood sound designs - “Don’t doubt just do.” - “Doubt kills.” - “There is no right decision.” - Don’t wait for your ‘muse’ to show up. Work isn’t magic, it’s work. - “Get weird with it.” https://vimeo.com/antfood
Darius Kazemi builder of bots - Can code have soul? A piano is an inanimate object, yet when someone plays it, pianos have soul. - Examples of Darius’ bots: Random Shopper, Two Headlines, Content, Forever, and Sorting Bot.
