nolan warden !
a couple things i love about my sewer rat cowboy son:
- he’s a very quiet, nonverbal person (outside of his singing), and he always has been. he’d prefer to go days without speaking, but when he does, his words are thought-out and meaningful. his vocabulary is incredible, and he sounds like he’s got a phd in philosophy with the way he talks about things. he’s funny if you let him be. - his grandfather vincent and his aunt milly are his two favorite people. while he loves the rest of his family, they are the two that understand him the most. in a way, a lot of his personality is a combination of the two of them, since they were incredibly involved with raising him. - his bull riding arc? what a thing of tragic beauty. he didn’t know how to deal with life, or what he wanted to do with it, so he ran with doing something that threatened it in eight second intervals. chasing that rush and dancing with death did its job, though, and nearly killed him. it left him with a life sentence of chronic pain and not a drop of satisfaction or purpose. - he’s incredibly empathetic, like milly, but it’s far less developed than hers. this is part of the reason why he’s not as verbal as the average person--- he doesn’t need to ask as many questions or use conversation as a tool of clarification. - he is angry. fucking fuming, almost constantly. it’s a problem. but, he doesn’t make it anyone else’s problem. sure, he directs all that anger to himself, which translates to self-destructive habits, but he’s also one of the most compassionate characters i have ever written. he understands his shit is his own. he isolates and he denies, but he also uses all that anger to do everything he can so no one he loves feels the way he does. - that being said, in an argument, he goes for the fucking throat. it’s rare, but he can be cruel. he will weed out insecurities and secrets and denied truths (using that handy-dandy enhanced empathy he’s got) and turn someone on their head with the way he dishes them out. he gets this from both his mother and his father, both of whom he’s exposed this mean side of himself to. - those mean arguments? a surefire way to spark one is to insult or threaten someone he loves. he doesn’t give a fuck about himself, but he’ll gladly fall on any sword for his family. another way? be an asshole to a woman in front of him. he may have a broken back but he’s also got no fear, so go ahead and play your cards, bud.

That’s different. I’m innocent.
Then I drove to Mexico, and I tried to enter a cockfight. As a person? Yes, Cliff, as a person.

songs written by nolan warden : dark, gritty melodies that tell a story are more his style, and it goes hand in hand with his deep, gravel voice, heard perfectly in silver wings. a good amount of his songs have the same outlaw theme as country music’s roaring seventies but shown through a modern lens. cocaine, codeine, murders, drinking, rambling, and tall tales of old cowboys can be found in his lyrics. he can say things that are just as jarring as an exposed nerve, like calling out bigots in the chilling track everybody walkin’ this land or singing about a murdered girl in kate mccanon. some songs, however, are soft and romantic, like hide me babe and caroline. the range of his sound is a major reason why he rises to fame quickly.
