Haku's Motive
Okay, another thought about Haku. But first of all, I want to say thank you to @tacharie’s theory post and @ghoulspaw’s reblog about Haku in my previous blog, because they really helped me a lot to understand more about his motives throughout the story😊✨
We all know Haku has been super sus during the whole story. His interactions with Darkwick, how he suddenly pops up whenever we try to do something related to the curse, and especially his reaction in the recent episode—it’s all really suspicious, right? If we go with the theory that Haku is a spy, I can’t help but wonder: was his kindness to the MC and everyone else all this time just a cover? And is he a villain like Darkwick? So I went back and reread from the very beginning, and also tried to recall some Tumblr posts I've read about him, to figure out his real motive. And in my conclusion, I think if Haku really is a spy for Darkwick or some other group (I’m not sure yet whose side he’s truly on), then it’s not by his own choice. He’s being forced into that role.
Do you remember Yamato? The character Elias mentioned when talking with Haku. I think Yamato might be one of the reasons Haku decided to take the role of spy. Why do I think that? Well, it might be wrong, but in Elias and Haku’s conversation, when Elias talked about Yamato’s disappearance and wondered why he still hasn’t been found, Haku replied, “Who knows? Maybe some kind soul’s taken him in and is spoiling him rotten.”
Sometimes Haku uses sarcasm or acts unserious to dodge questions he doesn’t want to answer. So I interpreted this line as a hint that Yamato was actually captured by Darkwick, and Haku might be one of the few who knows. Darkwick could be using Yamato as a hostage to threaten Haku into obeying their orders.
Also, if we go back to Chapter 38 of the first Frostheim episode, Haku warned us about how dangerous it is to be on bad terms with Darkwick or the institute. He even said, “Maybe they’ll put a collar on you.” I think this “collar” might symbolize Yamato—or someone close to Haku—being captured. And maybe in the past Haku helped someone who went against Darkwick, and this is also his punishment. So without any other choice, he agreed to become a spy in order to protect that person. He’ll do whatever it takes to eventually free Yamato (or whoever else it is). I also want to connect this with his answer to the MC’s question in chapter 20 of the first Hotarubi episode, when she asked why he works so hard for everyone around him.
At first, I thought he was talking about Zenji because at that time we still didn't know about Zenji existence. But after reading the latest chapter and connecting it with the Frostheim chapter, I think it might have been Yamato. He works so hard do this and that to gain Darkwick trust. I’m still not entirely sure, though.
So overall, that’s my thought on his motive if he really is a spy. Back to my first question: does this mean Haku’s kindness to MC and the others is just a cover? Honestly, I think some of it might have started as an act. At first, maybe he was kind just to keep an eye on MC as part of his mission. But over time, I think his feelings became genuine. Now, I’m sure he really does care about MC, just like the other ghouls do. That’s why I think he’s currently torn between two priorities: helping MC or obeying Darkwick’s orders in order to free his friend.
If in the end of story Haku is a spy, I don’t think Haku is a bad guy at all. For me, he still comes across as a genuinely nice and hardworking person and definitely isn’t fully on Darkwick’s side. We can see this in the times he corners the Chancellor or other staff who harm others (like in Lyca’s case), or when he hides things from Darkwick (like MC’s attempted escape, Subaru's real stigma or Zenji’s existence). Plus, Darkwick doesn’t even trust him fully—proven by the fact that Haku didn’t know Subaru’s secret about Lyca. If they trusted him completely, he wouldn’t have been so surprised and asking Subaru why he hid it.
That’s all my rambling about Haku. Again, these are just my thoughts—it could be right, it could be wrong, because he’s such a complex character and the story doesn’t really tell us much about him. I remember reading a post months ago from someone who shared same idea, but sadly I can’t find their posting anymore. If anyone knows, please let me know! I’d really appreciate it since their theory helped me enjoy and understand Haku’s character even more.
Anddd let’s discuss this here!!! Though I’m sorry in advance if I take a while to reply or didn't reply to it yet because I’m still not used to Tumblr’s reply/reblog features even though I’ve been using it for a year 😅. Also, since I’m not fluent in English yet, it sometimes takes me longer to understand the story or other comments😭.
I wish the devs would add a translate feature in the discussion box, cuz I wanna read the JP and other language users’ comments sooo bad. It’s really inconvenient going back and forth to Google Translate just to understand every single comment 😩
Spoiler of Episode 21
Warning: If you haven’t read it yet, please skip my post.
There are a lot of things I want to say about this chapter, but since it’s full of riddles—and unfortunately I’m not really good at solving riddles—I need to reread the story. For now, I just want to talk about the ghouls in this chapter that I found interesting, along with some questions that still confuse me.
First is Haku. In this chapter, we finally learn a bit more about him. From what Professor Dante said to him in the staff room, I think Haku is the type of person who isn’t good at relying on others and prefers to do things by himself. As far as I’ve read, especially in Hotarubi’s episode, he rarely asks for help. For example, in episode 5 he worked alone to gather information about the shrine and contacted his acquaintance by himself. And now, in this chapter, he again chooses to check the staff’s name by himself. It seems kinda suspicious why he wants to do it alone this time. But aside from that, I think it’s just his habit—he forgets he can solve things together with others. I don’t think it’s because he doesn’t trust anyone. Looking at his background as the heir of a prestigious shrine, where he’s expected to do everything perfectly, it makes sense that he developed the habit of working hard and not relying on others. And if the theory about Haku being a spy is true, it also makes sense that he wouldn’t want to risk involving others in his actions. If that’s the case, it’s kind of sad. Maybe that’s why Professor Dante reminded him to ask for help when needed. Haku boy, don’t push yourself too hard to carry all the weight alone. I also feel relieved that Haku isn’t on bad terms with Haru and Jiro. You know Haku is one of my favorite ghouls, and since we still don’t know much about him, I’m really curious about his relationships with the ghouls from other dorms. So far, after this episode, it seems like he only has bad tension with Tohma. I’m not sure about Jin. And Yuri? I’m not sure either.
Haku initiated a conversation with Yuri in this episode, but Yuri looked surprised and nervous. I don’t know if it was just Yuri’s reaction to suddenly seeing Haku, since it seems they’ve barely met in person after moving from Frostheim.
Second, I really liked the unexpected banter between Haru and Taiga. At first, I thought Haru was a little afraid of Taiga, because sometimes when he talked to him he seemed scared. But actually, it turns out he was just anxious about Peekaboo’s safety whenever that cute little furball was near Taiga. In this episode, without Peekaboo around, I finally saw another side of him—he was more stern toward Taiga.
Based on Rui and Haku’s comments about their past, it seems Haru and Taiga were like this from the very beginning. I think he’s actually on good terms with Taiga, but because of Shion, their relationship looks strained. Now I really want to know more about the relationship between Dionysia and Sinostra students from a year ago. Maybe we’ll get more answers in the second season?
Third is Taiga. I knew this guy would be more cooperative in this episode. Before his memory impairment, I believe he was just as smart as Jin and reliable when it came to missions. You can see several times he gave logical opinions during their discussions. Also, I don’t think he’d cause a big ruckus this time, since this mission is the MC’s last chance to break her curse—and because he knows something about this mission. Every time his chat box shows the “…” I feel like he’s planning something. Please, Taiga, just tell us your plan already! Don’t stay silent all the time. And about his relationship with Haku, I think I finally found the answer. Some people say Taiga doesn’t like Haku, pointing to his reactions in the prologue and during the second Sinostra mission. But I think their relationship isn’t good or bad—it’s just neutral. His reaction to Haku seems the same as his reaction to everyone. So I don’t think the claim that Taiga doesn’t like Haku is valid. It's just Taiga is being Taiga.
Next is Rui. If we look at it without context, Rui’s statement in this episode almost sounds like a typical “poor second male lead” who unfortunately isn’t chosen by the FL, LOL. But aside from that, I really liked the way Rui treated us in this episode. He genuinely cared for and prioritized the MC. His quick reactions whenever the MC yelped or seemed in danger, and the way he volunteered to join the mission and give the effort to keep the team together—Rui, you are the man! But what surprised me is why no one, especially the MC, asked about his clothes. I mean, is it okay for him to wear loose clothes that reveal so much skin in such a crowded place? In previous episodes, Rui was always cautious about both his clothes and being in a crowd. Maybe I’m just overthinking, but it feels odd.
Also, in the last chapter when he told the MC he had something to do, it seemed Rui was suspicious of Haku and decided to follow him.
Another interesting thing is the female staff member. I’ve always believed side characters in this game have deeper connections with the plot. And after finishing the story, I found her really suspicious. Nancy said humans can’t see the denizens, but based on her reaction, the female staff could see the mice. That makes me think she’s not an ordinary human. Could she be connected to the denizens or Kyklos? Could it be... she is the denizen? What if she’s the one who killed Robin, the oldest brother mouse, and Humpty Dumpty? Maybe she was the denizen disguised as staff who entered the storage room before the mice brothers went in, as Nancy mentioned and then poisons the mouse. And since she was in human form, she could have pushed Humpty Dumpty from the wall.
Also, when Haku said the denizens seemed harmless, Taiga looked doubtful. Could it be that Taiga knows something about the female staff or the denizens—that they aren’t as harmless as they seem? Here’s another absurd theory: what if she is Kyklos herself? She said she had just started working at the park recently, and we know Kyklos has been around the park not long ago. The timing feels too strange to be a coincidence. She might even be the “something horrible” Nancy said was watching her. And maybe it’s just me, but her voice somehow feels similar to Kyklos’s.
Oh, and about Professor Hyde. When he appeared after Haku and the MC left, he said Professor Dante was “walking on the ice.” Could it be that Dante wasn’t supposed to give advice to Haku and the MC, because it would help them catch Kyklos, which goes against Darkwick’s plan? I’m not sure.
Finally, the ending. I still felt the tension when the MC picked up the phone, Haku’s voice wasn’t clear, and suddenly the MC returned to Kisaragi. Honestly, it scared me because all of a sudden, she was alone. Where are Taiga and Haru? Does Kyklos have the ability to open a domain that isolates someone, like the anomaly in Waves of Love? If so, then why were Taiga and Haku able to enter Kisaragi station in the prologue?
We finally in the climax of the story. It's really a long time to reach this point. I hope she’s okay, and the ghouls can save her. Or maybe we’ll finally get a conversation with Kyklos—like why she decided to show herself to the MC now?
There are so many questions left in this episode. Hopefully, we’ll get answers in the next one. For now, I’m still confused, but I really enjoyed reading it.
Oh last thing :
my reaction :
I’m so hyped for the new episode!! Zigza, you better spoil us with more MC screen time. Let her shine this time 🫵✨
Omg have you guys seen the new teaser?? Toku-chan is sooo adorable in that witch outfit😍
Ehem, so… my absurd mind suddenly whispered, “Hey, let’s make fanart of all the ghouls!” And since my drawing mood was fully charged, I started with the ones where I could already imagine the suitable pose for them. Surprisingly I drew Sho and Suba smoothly. BUT THEN… when it was Haku and Taiga’s turn…
You two… I love you, really. But WHY are you both such a nightmare to draw?? I lost count of how many times I redrew them. Haku’s eyes just never looked right, and Taiga’s menacing (?) expression? Forget it. I wanted to throw my sketchbook.
And yes… I gave up, everybody. I don’t know if I drew them well. I just completely drained all the energy I had been saving up for a week. Maybe next time, when my drawing battery is full again, I’ll fix them. Also, I really admire other TKDB fans who can draw them beautifully—like wow, you’re all so cool!! Teach me your secret please 🥺
Okay, enough of my yapping. By the way, I want to try drawing the other ghouls, but I still can’t figure out what poses would fit them. Do you guys have any recommendations?👀 I think it would be fun to hear your opinions!

My yapping about Episode 19
Slight spoiler ahead!
If you haven’t read Episode 19 yet, feel free to skip this post
Baby Alan?! He’s so adorable! And his backstory… pat pat pat — I just want to give him a big hug.
After all those Sho and MC moments in this episode….
Me : Sho, what are we?
I saw that Jin and Tohma will appear in the next episode. Could it be related to the third-year roundtable? And is there a chance the next episode might be an inter-house mission?
Go Yuri! You did great standing up to those who looked down on you.
Aaaaa Luca I love you so much. How can you be so sweet like this?
Leo, thank you for voicing what I’ve been thinking about Alan and MC! Honestly, I don’t hate Leo, but I don’t exactly like him either. I just don’t appreciate how he constantly acts like a jerk to everyone. Still, I admit there are moments where I agree with him. I think he just doesn’t like sugarcoating things? I’m actually happy that—even while still acting like a brat—he encouraged us and helped Alan not carry his burden alone (in his own way, of course).
Girl... It really hurt to see MC almost give up on curing her curse. I understand how she feels—always being given hope, only to end up disappointed again and again. It’s no wonder she started to feel hopeless. I’m just glad she could finally be honest with herself and the ghouls.
And that scene really got me thinking. If the spy is working with DA, could there be a chance we’ll uncover the truth about the spy through Yoshitaka’s phone?
Overall I really enjoyed this chapter. I laughed, smiled and cried throughout the story. We got more lore about each ghoul, and we finally got a glimpse of what lies ahead. It feels like the story is nearing its climax and we’re getting closer to the prologue scene. I seriously can’t wait to see what happens next!
So, uhm, MC only has two months left, and this is how I imagine she looks when the flowers start blooming from her body. I'm not really sure why I drew two versions of her—I think I just wanted to portray her curse with two different vibes.
Happy birthday to my ultimate favorite ghoul!!! 🎉 I adore him so much for always being kind and dependable to the MC. He deserves all the love today!

OMG, SHO AND HIS SKATEBOARD !!!! Are we finally going to see his skateboarding skills?! Damn I'm so hyped for the next episode!🤩
