in honor of this day. im actually writing out my analysis of things rather than going “please trust its there”

the diving bell (the crane wives) in context of tsftl. this is going to be long. you have been warned. it’s gotten out of hand and there’s nothing i can do about it now

first of all the title - im not saying it invokes the diving lanterns but im not saying it doesn’t

”I will drown for you” self explanatory

“sink to black from blue” - aside from continuing prev lyric, wifies goes from blue (the ocean) to black (screen going dark, footage/screenshots being redacted)

“and let the water win” all he had to do, letting levi win, and he’s doing it for hummer, really (“for you”)

“wear you ‘round my waist” metaphorically carrying him through it all, even after he dies. also if you’re insane like me you can draw parallels to parrot and the spyglass being commonly portrayed as worn at the waist

“hold your heart like waves” heart of the sea symbolism that will be referenced approximately a hundred more times here

“open my lungs to let you in” he gives hummer the water breathing potion, literally giving away his ability to breathe. can also be compared to opening his mind and being receptive of the whole idea, letting levi in and allowing levi to save him and let him breathe

“i descend so well / in an open diving bell” confidence in his abilities when he has equipment (most clearly the lanterns, but yknow). confident as long as he has tools. as long as he knows what he’s working with

“the beauty of the deep / far into abyss” he’s beginning to enjoy it, really. the oceans that are deeper and different in ways he’s not used to. he goes to such lengths because it interests him. as he goes further - as he’s taken to a separate place entirely - it’s beautiful. objectively. and he appreciates that

- note from midway through, realizing - you can interpret the lyrics with “you” as referring to hummer or levi, either works and both are interesting

“(far into abyss /) in your silent lips / call me, will i sleep” in all honesty this line is more confusing to understand for me. hummer and levi are both silent at the end, and both calling to his curiosity, pushing him to continue forward after he’s gone so far. he can stop (“will i sleep”). he won’t.

“swallow my heart whole / sink me like a stone” there we go, the faith is back, completely and entirely. plus the “heart” / heart of the sea connection

“I am not afraid / of anything” reads as trying to convince himself, à la derek.

“the warmth against my ear / echo heartbeats here / crashing inside my head” same heart symbolism as before, “echo” given that there’s two of them (wifies and the heart of the sea, which i really need a shorter way to refer to)… also all of the heart stuff can connect to the whole 571-is-the-numeric-id-for-heart-of-the-sea thing (knowledge gained courtesy of user deerdogs)…

“far too soon for this / but i am all in / no matter how it ends” he doesn’t want to die, doesn’t want to lose this lead so soon, doesn’t want hummer to have died / but he is committed. he’s come this far and he’s going to keep going. whatever happens. he is “all in”; he’s dedicated himself to this

”water rushes in / and i will welcome it” again self explanatory

“I am not afraid to give you everything” ((parrot)x2) - he isn’t. you could take the repetition as referring to hummer and levi separately, or just as reiterating it. this feels less convincing himself and more promising. admitting. accepting. just true. if not the first time he says it, then the second

yeah that’s enough. it’s… just a little bit long. a small amount. sorry for that

aaa actually feeling insane. i need to talk to people about this!!! what do we think about the theory that hummer might be the human incarnation of levi because of all the testing wifies all along and all levi wants is someone to believe in him and when he finally does hummer disappears? but then what about him ‘accidentally’ picking up the water breathing potion because isn’t that why he dies? did he die? also been thinking about how hummer never logs on and is always already being there idk i might be wrong? is hummer real? is anything real?
