gourdy doesn’t remember his parents’ faces because they probably didn’t have faces. cartoons of the era tended to cut adults’ faces off and show them from the neck down (think miss bellum from powerpuff girls). what if that’s what they did for gourdy’s parents since they weren’t major characters? no need for full toons and designs if they’re hardly ever mentioned, right? they gave gourdy the memories, but he will forever have that tip-of-his-tongue, not-quite-right feeling about their faces whenever he tries to draw them. he is desperately trying to recall faces that simply do not exist.
