Does anyone have any recommendations for herbs that I can plant in small pots?
I don’t have a lot of room to have a full blown garden (unfortunately) but I do have room for some small pots.
Dad keeps sharing random facts about bees
To treat common mites, beekeepers coat their bees in powdered sugar. This kills the mites but doesn’t hurt the bees, and they will clean it off anyway. It does, however, make them look like tiny bee ghosts until they groom themselves.
Skunks are natural predators of bees. They will grab a mouthful of bees and suck the juices out before spitting out the bees’ carcasses. To keep the skunks from doing this, beekeepers will build their hives high enough that the skunks have to reach their front paws up to get to the hives. This way, their bellies are exposed and the bees are able to fight back and sting them. Either way, bees die.
Bees are curious, and they may follow you around for a while just to see what you’re doing. Most bees will trail you for a yard or two, but one breed will stalk you for up to half a mile.
*** bees are curious** that is adorable omg
I would be interested in seeing a skunk grab a mouthful of bees. And i like how bees went from curious to stalking real quick
Okay but no one included a picture of ghost bees soooo here:
I was talking with a beekeeper at my parent’s summer blowout party over the weekend (my life is awesome in the oddest ways) and he clued me in to a kind of bee called the ankle-biter that has been bred to fight mites in other bee colonies by BITING OFF AND EATING THE LEGS OF THE MITES and if that isn’t the coolest thing then get the fuck out I am 1000000% here for those bees
Oh, look. Bees. Fluffy, sugar coated bees. Time to get @formaldehydedoesstuff
I was VERY WORRIED THERE for a second because it almost looks like a– bunch of fungus covered partially dead bunch of bees or something. But that is precious. They’re little… linen-looking small walking sugar collections. Excellent.
I had to look up sugar coated bees myself and I found this beauty:
@kryallaorchid
I ain’t got other shit to post so uh, take a non-canon Chrysocolla
Talking about Blueberries with Dave!
Dave is my coworker and has endless knowledge of gardening facts!
Dave: I have several blueberry pants, but the best producing ones are the Chandler Blueberries. They do really well in acidic soil and next to major roads.
In the fall the leaves turn a beautiful fire red before falling.
When it comes to pruning, do NOT prune for the first 2 years! If you do it will effect the growth and production of the bush. In the third year, only trim of the third year growths. After that you can prune it however you'd like.
Flow hive! My mom and I are planning on buying one of these. They are excellent for easy, simple beekeeping. They allow you to extract honey from the hive without disturbing the bees. Besides checking the hive for bugs/diseases, there is no need to interact with the bees! Unless you want to take honeycombs, in which case you’ll have to disturb the bees.
We are planning on getting Italian honey bees, which are the most gentle and even tempered of honeybees.
Nigerian Dwarf Goats is the breed I’m looking into getting!! I will upload any information I get on them, i.e room needed, food consumption, ect.
This website/catalog was recommend to me by a coworker of mine named Dave, who has been gardening for many many years. He always gets good seeds and crops from their plants year after year, and since they sell heirloom seeds, you don’t have to keep buying seeds every year! You can just harvest the seeds from your most healthiest/productive plants, save them, and plant them the following year! This will be my first year ordering from them.
Little about what I have
Hi! As of right now I like in about 700sq/ft of house and yard. I have 3 chickens, 2 dogs, and soon to have a tiny kitten.
I am going to try out a few new plants this year for gardening, last year being my fist year and only having only done sweet peas and cilantro, I’d like to expand my horizons.
Please msg me at any time if you’d like to know more about my garden or my animals!! ^-^
