Vegans of tumblr, listen up. Harvesting agave in the quantities required so you dont have to eat honey is killing mexican long-nosed bats. They feed off the nectar and pollinate the plants. They need the agave. You want to help the environment? Go back to honey. Your liver and thyroid will thank you, as well. Agave is 90% fructose, which can cause a host of issues. Bye.
So let me get this straight ,vegans should stop eating the food of the Mexcian long-nosed bats, because the bats need it, and instead vegans should instead eat honey, the food of bees, that their larvae need, even though the bee populations are facing ecological issues as it stands. 10/10 post, dude.
Did you forget the whole part where only excess is taken and all their needs are met and then some orrrr?
Like, did you read it orrrrr?
Anyway, BUY HONEY SAVE BEES
It is a 10/10 post. Because OP is right.
Bees do not suffer when beekeepers take their honey, because experienced beekeepers do not take all of their honey, in fact, they leave plenty of honey left for the bees to consume over the winter. If we do not collect their honey, 1 of two things will happen.
1. they will leave for a bigger home. Which at first seems fine until you remember that bees are dying very quickly out in the wild.
or
2. They will start using the areas that they reserve for their young as a place to make more honey. This is bad because if no more young are being produced, then the hive will start to die out because no new workers are coming into the world, and the average live only 150 days, so it would also mean the loss of more bees.
So yeah, eating honey isnât inhumane at all. In fact, youâre helping the bees by eating what they produce and giving money to the bee keepers who are the ones making sure that the hive will keep being healthy.
LOUDER FOR THE VEGANS IN THE BACK: use honey, not agave! Bees need your support and other animals need agave! Using honey means more bees!!
Other animal products that are absolutely fine to use because they produce it in excess:
- Wool. Sheep need to be sheared or their wool will get excessively large, matted and gross. Its legit just a haircut. Calm down and use wool instead of whatever fake acrylic microplastic shit they have in stores now. Wool is super warm, insulating, and guess what! It grows back! Its a renewable resource and all the sheep want in return is some good pasture and protection from predators.
- Eggs. Iâm not talking about storebought eggs. Go to your local farmerâs market. Find someone around with chickens/ducks. These birds produce eggs literally every day and will not stop unless they are molting, brooding, or kept in the dark for most of the day. Like I am not joking when I say you can very easily find someone with poultry and they will beg you to take some eggs. Theres so many. Please. Take some duck eggs. I dont want them. I had 8 laying ducks last year. Thats 8 eggs every day. Thats 2 dozen eggs every THREE DAYS. Thats SO MANY EGGS PLEASE TAKE SOME EGGS
Reducing animal cruelty does not mean abolish the use of animal products. Go eat honey. Go use wool. Go find a friend with birds and eat eggs, or get your own. Just because it comes from an animal does not make it cruel.

A âSpanish dancerâ sea slug (Hexabranchus sanguineus) has been spotted putting on a vibrant display along the coast of Western Australia. The large droid nudibranch has a soft and flattened body and can grow to a maximum length of 90cm, although they are more commonly 20 to 30cm. The Spanish dancer is found throughout the Indo-Pacific, including around Australia, near Japan, Hawaii and parts of the east coast of Africa, with a penchant for rocky and coral reefs. (Source)

Why donât some people realize that the best way to care for some creatures is to humanely euthanize??
Case in point:
This just crossed my facebook feed. This poor kestrel was electrocuted and is under the care of a center in Hungary (I believe). Both its feet and one wing had to be amputated. How is this a life? The poor creature canât perch, canât hold its own food. It canât be a bird.
Amputations alone arenât bad, but trying to keep an animal alive when it canât preform basic behaviors is cruel. Why canât people understand this?
Just because it can't perform basic functions doesn't mean it can't be happy. Should we be putting down humans with those limits? Should any human who cannot perform basic functions be put down?
Do you work with animals? If you did, youâd know we donât use words like âhappy.â Donât distract from the point by putting anthropomorphizing words in my mouth.
Since Iâm fucking tired of people comparing injured animals to disabled people letâs use the basic framework/analysis for an animals care/welfareâthe five freedoms
Hereâs the five freedoms as written out by the Farm Animal Welfare Counsel:
Freedom from Hunger and Thirst: By ready access to fresh water and diet to maintain health and vigor.
Freedom from Discomfort: By providing an appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting area.
Freedom from Pain, Injury or Disease: By prevention or rapid diagnosis and treatment.
Freedom to Express Normal Behavior: By providing sufficient space, proper facilities and company of the animalâs own kind.
Freedom from Fear and Distress: By ensuring conditions and treatment which avoid mental suffering.
So what we can do for this bird is feed it and give it water. Thatâs it.
This animal cannot understand where its limbs have gone, cannot feel comfortable and at ease in any environment missing three crucial limbs, is bound to be in pain and injure itself from trying to act like a normal kestrel, cannot do most basic behaviors, and cannot be saved from its own distress
A bird cannot have explained to them why they donât have their legs and wing. A bird lives in the here and now and their here and now will always be âI cannot act in all the ways I need. I am scared. I am alone. I am vulnerable.â
So no. Weâre not about to compare a fucking animal to disabled people and it speaks volumes of ignorance to animals and their welfare, and to profound dehumanization and disrespect of disabled people that you would even think to do so.
Now, Iâm not a bird expert, just a human medicine nerd who knows a little bit about electrical injuries, but thereâs two more big differences that really jump out at me:
1. Kestrels canât report their symptoms. The possible sequelae of an electrical injury are wide and varied, and they donât necessarily hit all at once. There is no way of measuring the true extent of this birdâs distress, and its distress could easily increase over time.
2. Kestrels are fucking tiny compared to humans. Electrical injuries are going to hit more systems and do more damage. A creature that size is going to suffer a lot more than a similarly-shocked human.
Absolutely. Electrocuted raptor patients have later exhibited bone death, necrosis of various tissues, brain damage, and long-term chronic pain. Any electrocuted raptor that is not put down should be carefully monitored and constantly reevaluated for signs of distress, which are not always noticeable.

How can you justify keeping your cats inside all the time if you can acknowledge that they do in fact want to go outside and hunt?
How can you justify not letting your child eat glue if you can acknowledge that they do in fact want to eat glue?
Keeping a cat indoors for their whole life is just sad honestly
Not as sad as what happens when theyâre allowed outside bud
Listen: if you cannot be bothered to properly enrich an animal who sleeps eighteen (18) hours a day and takes delight in such simple items as crumpled paper, a piece of string, and a box, you shouldn't have animals whatsoever. Keep your cat inside where it won't die a horrible death at a third of its natural lifespan after decimating the local small wildlife population.
Oooo heres one! What, in your opinion, are the coolest/most unique symbiotic relationships between animals?
I think most of the most interesting just because most people have never heard of it and it's truly bizarre is the symbiotic relationship between a salamander (Ambystoma maculatum) and salamander algae (Oophila amblystomatis).
The alga actually grows inside in the egg capsule of the salamander's eggs, and is not been found to grow anywhere else. They've also now been found to also grow within the actual cells of the salamander embryos.
The alga metabolises CO2 that is produced within the egg by the salamander embryo, via photosynthesis and converts it into O2. This makes it the first (and so far only) example of endosymbiosis in a vertebrate species.
This is our little feeder warbler, a yellow-rumped warbler to be exact, but donât let the cuteness fool you. This both delicate and sometimes cute, plump (on cold days) warbler lords our feeder, and fights off much bigger birds. And due to the little âvâ of yellow on its crown, I have named the dear bird V, or maybe I should spell it out as Vee. Having a regular bird I know reminds me of the quotation below. I love this quotation more than anything. And I wish you your very own bird that you recognize and see on a regular basis.
If one day I see a small bird and recognize it, a thin thread will form between me and that bird. Â If I just see it but donât really recognize it, there is no thin thread. Â If I go out tomorrow and see and really recognize that same individual small bird again, the thread will thicken and strengthen just a little. Â Every time I see and recognize that bird, the thread strengthens. Â Eventually it will grow into a string, then a cord, and finally a rope. Â This is what it means to be a Bushman. Â We make ropes with all aspects of the creation in this way.
