sometimes you read a fanfiction to distract and enjoy yourself but you end up reading a dialogue or a sentence that fundamentally changes who you are as a person and how you perceive the world around you, and honestly i wouldn't have it any other way
A ‘Ring of Fire’ solar eclipse is a rare phenomenon that occurs when the moon’s orbit is at its apogee: the part of its orbit farthest away from the Earth. Because the moon is so far away, it seems smaller than normal to the human eye. The result is that the moon doesn't entirely block out our view of the sun, but leaves an “annulus,” or ring of sunlight glowing around it. Hence the term “annular” eclipse rather than a “total” eclipse.
Note to self: in order to write, you have to actually do more than stare at a Word document rereading what you’ve already written. For example, maybe typing new words would be a good strategy.
Summary: You work at a concession stand in the arena that Shawn Mendes happens to be performing at.
A/N: This isn’t my first imagine, but it is my first Shawn Mendes imagine. I hope you enjoy it! It might not be my best work. I still have to get used to the feel of writing Shawn Mendes imagines and fanfiction. If you want to make a request, just send me an ask. <3
It’s already in the air, the excited buzz of a concert. It’s one of your favorite things in the world. It was one of the reasons you took the job to work at the concession stand in the arena. You don’t get to attend the concert and see what’s happening, but you get to hear it and watch other people get excited as they enter the arena to see their first concert or their favorite artist. You count yourself as lucky to see such joy on people’s faces.
It wasn’t time for the concert yet and you still had hours before the first customer would arrive. You hop up on the counter and swing your legs kicking the cabinets under you. You work with two other people, Ethan and Sara. Ethan is busy loading up the ovens and Sara is helping with prep. You pull out your phone and scan through twitter, specifically looking at the tweets related to the concert happening tonight.
My first ever Shawn Mendes concert in 8 hours!! Xoxox
I hope I meet him, he’s so amazing!
Third Shawn Mendes concert is tonight, never gets old <3
You find yourself smiling along to the tweets. Shawn Mendes is talented and if you are being honest, you would prefer to be a concert goer this time.
“Feeling a little sad to be missing out on this one, y/n?” You look up as Ethan nudges your foot with his knee, wiping his hands on a towel.
You shrug your shoulders and wave as the bartender you’ve come to call Uncle Scotch walks by. “A little bit, if I’m being honest. It’s fine though, there’s always next time and I still get to hear it.”
One of the security guys walks by and stops at the counter, “Shouldn’t you be helping them, y/n?” He smiles teasingly at you.
“You know me, Brian. I’m always working so hard. I just needed a break.” You laugh and hop down from the counter and start cleaning its surface again, making a point to look at the big security guard. He chuckles to himself and you laugh as the other two staff members roll their eyes playfully. You love this place and you’re more than happy to be working alongside Ethan and Sara even during a Shawn Mendes concert.
You knew they had already set up the stage, you walked in a few times to get a glance of the progress. It wouldn’t be long before you and Ethan would make bets on which girl in line is a concert pro and which one is going to lose their concert virginity. It was one of your favorite past times with the two of them. Ethan will decide if they are a pro or not and Sara will decide if they have been to see this particular artist once before or not. You will agree or disagree and then casually ask as you take their order and money.
You listen as soundcheck comes and goes and you imagine how Shawn Mendes must look on stage in the nearly empty arena. He sounds amazing and you fight the urge to sneak a peek. Even Sara offers to cover for you if anyone asks but you shake your head. You know very well they have also both given up concerts they would have loved to go to and never snuck off for soundcheck or to try and see the artist.
It was getting closer to time for people to start being let in and you are helping wrap slices of pizza in tinfoil and put them in the warmers. You all three have your backs turned to the counter as you playfully nudge each other and make up embarrassing songs as you get ready for the start of the concert. It catches you off guard when someone clears their throat behind you, making you jump which makes Ethan laugh. You shoot him a glare as you turn quickly and look at the group that is standing on the other side of the counter, you step forward and clear your throat, “Sorry, we weren’t aware anyone was here. How can I help you?” You’re talking to the man standing in the front, but then you glance at the other two in his company and freeze.
Shawn Mendes is standing right in front of you as he looks up at the menu. You uncomfortably look down and wipe at the flour that is smeared across the front of your black work shirt. Are you imagining things? Surely, it’s just someone that looks like him because why would Shawn Mendes be at a concession stand at the arena he’s playing at? They have food catered in.
He looks down at you and smiles, “Hey honey, how are you?”
You blink a couple times before you realize he’s actually talking to you, “Uh hi, I’m so sorry. Was there something you wanted?”
He gives you a funny look and smiles, “Why are you apologizing?” He shakes his head and looks back up at the menu, “Honestly, I just really want something small and greasy. I shouldn’t, I just couldn’t help myself. I think I’ll just have some fries.”
You nod and look back at Sara who is looking at you with wide eyes. “Uh we haven’t put any down yet, we were waiting a little closer to time so they would be fresh. It’ll be a few minutes.”
You turn back to Shawn, but he already heard and nods. “That’s fine, I can wait.” You expect him to walk away and come back in a few minutes, but he takes a seat at one of the many stools on the opposite side of the counter. “So, what’s your name?”
You try to calm your heart and speak normally. “My name’s y/n. I would ask what yours is, but..” You both laugh and you watch as the two who walked up with him start wandering off, looking at the merch booth.
He smiles brightly and it makes your heart stop, “Fair enough. How did a pretty girl like you get stuck working tonight?”
You blush at the unexpected compliment and wish you could stop the warmth that starts flooding your cheeks. “I mean, I work at a concession stand in an arena. I typically work during events.” You laugh as he chuckles and continue, “I don’t mind. Concerts are my favorite. I enjoy the feeling and what it’s like to see everyone as they get excited. The buzz is amazing even when you aren’t completely a part of it.”
He’s nodding along, leaning forward across the counter. “That’s amazing. I imagine it’s pretty great to get an outsider’s perspective on the buzz and hype of a concert.”
You bite your lip and shrug, “I bet it’s pretty great to get a performer’s perspective on the buzz and hype of a concert.”
“True. It never gets old, I love it.” He leans forward a little more, sliding to the edge of the stool. “Will you get to see any part of my show?”
You shake your head sadly, “Unfortunately not, I have to make sure your fans get fed.”
“I’m sorry. Would you be interested in getting to see some of it?” He’s biting his lip and reaches up to mess with his shirt.
You shrug, wanting to play it cool, but you can’t lie either. “I might be. I did kind of want to be an attendee tonight instead of a worker.”
His smile returns even bigger, “I’m sure arrangements can be made.”
You start to shake your head, but then Sara is handing you a small container of fries and the two others that walked up with Shawn have returned, “Time to go. Food done?”
You feel your heart drop, you wanted more time. Was he going to offer for you to see the concert anyways? “Uh, they just got done.” You reach to hand Shawn the fries, but he’s reaching in his back pocket for his wallet. “Oh you don’t have to pay.”
He looks up at you quickly, “Of course I do. Let me pay. How much is it?”
You shake your head and force the fries into his hands, “No really. Staff and company of the venue eat free. I wouldn’t even have a job if it wasn’t for performers and such.”
He smiles and thanks you as he takes the fries and pops one into his mouth. He opens his mouth to say something, but then he’s getting escorted away. He looks back at you to give you an apologetic smile and you smile back and wave. Once he’s out of sight you sit in the floor behind the counter and run your fingers through your hair. “Well that was exciting.” You shoot a glare at Ethan who’s standing over you.
“Did I say anything stupid?” You look both at Sara and Ethan who look just as confused and dumbfounded as you.
Sara shakes her head though and finally laughs. “No, you did great. We were all a bit shocked to see him. Has that ever happened? Anyone performing coming down to the concession stand?”
Ethan shakes his head, “Never. It was worth it for the look on y/n’s face though.” He laughs and you kick your leg out at him laughing too.

The concert is over. You wave goodbye to the last few staff you can see finishing up the odd jobs here and there and head for the exit with Ethan and Sara in tow. “You know, I’ll never know what Shawn was going to say to me. I bet he’s already forgot who I am and everything.”
You feel them both shrug beside you rather than see it. Sara is the one to speak though, “Maybe not. He might oddly remember the random concession stand girl.” You both giggle.
You see Brian at his car and wave, he always leaves slightly earlier than the other security guys so he can get home and relieve the babysitter. He spots you and waves back, before looking at you again and shouting from a couple of cars over, “Hey, y/n! I heard some rumors that Shawn Mendes’ bodyguard was asking about you after the concert. Don’t know how true it is, but I found it interesting.” He slips into his car before you have a chance to react.
You lock eyes with Sara and then Ethan, “What? Probably not me, right?”
Ethan shrugs and laughs, “You know how rumors here are. Maybe he thought you was creepy and had his guys find out about you.”
You roll your eyes and get into the car with them as the two of them snicker. This is one time you wish you hadn’t carpooled with them. “Just get us home.” You try to ignore what Brian said, even if it was true, you didn’t know why and it would probably come up to nothing.

You take off your work clothes that always end up smeared in flour even though you don’t do the cooking. It’s not until you’re out of the shower and in bed when you hear your phone ding. You look at the twitter notification and sit up straight. It’s not real. You click on it and there it is: Shawn Mendes followed you. You click on his profile and almost scream into your pillow, what?! You barely have time to think before you receive a message, “About not being able to see the concert…”
