I kinda think the point is that sam and john weren't that similar at all until they had shared trauma. grief affected them in the same way, and it brought them closer before johns death. it wasn't like oh sam was just like john all along it was similar trauma and grief pushing them in the same destructive direction. sam stood outside of the grief that directed his life for 22 years. john and sam could never understand each other until they shared that tragedy.
