showed my therapist pics of reboot She-ra today and she said, "wow she looks so much cooler than the one I grew up with!"

I joked that there are people online who would flay her for that opinion. she looked at me with utter confusion and asked why. I stopped short. mentally flipped through the many, many arguments I've seen over the years..."they think it's woke slop because her boobies aren't out."

which really sums up so much of the "critique" I saw at the time. oh nooo the cartoon isn't hot enough for you? :(( go rewatch the og if you like it so much, it's not that hard

she also said the original He-man and She-ra designs look like they were drawn by a gay man and a straight man respectively* and well

she's not wrong. the original designs are iconic but I don't think it should be controversial to acknowledge they're very silly and to prefer the 2018 designs. conclusion She-ra has always been gay as hell and is therapist-approved :)

*I think the studio behind both originals employed many queer creatives? this is just my therapist's judgement lol, not a factual statement

also it's a weird thing to discuss, but the characters do in fact have feminine figures and chests. not in every shot; the animation can be a bit inconsistent. but they're there. they just don't have their tiddies out for battle lol

with the exception of catra's s4-5 boob window ig, but it seems to work like a compression type sports bra; squish down not push up. very secure.

To be fair, I don't think anything says Adora is a lesbian in canon? Like she's attracted to women, but there's no reason she couldn't be bi. And Pidge/Katie is literally shown to wear dresses several times in vld and be fine with it, why is it wrong to see her in one?

My only issue with that post is that it's ai, which steals from artists.

counterpoint: Adora only shows attraction to women in spop and so, even without external confirmation, it's as obvious as it can be in a show that doesn't use the term that Adora is a lesbian.

spop also has many canonical bisexual characters who, in contrast to Adora, show attraction to men and women. for example: Mermista blushes at She-ra and is also into Seahawk; Perfuma goes to prom with Bow and later dances with Scorpia; Glimmer and Bow are a little into Adora and Seahawk respectively, and are also in love with each other. this is how bisexual characters are portrayed in spop. if Adora were written to be bisexual, she would be portrayed similarly. she is not.

as for Pidge, I only watched Voltron once many years ago, but I believe she only wore dresses before joining the Garrison (flight school? military? idk) and once she cut her hair and started dressing masculine to sneak in, she never turned back, even after she was revealed to be a girl and had the opportunity to do so. but I could be misremembering. I was never very into Voltron lol I just liked Pidge

it's just so. ugh. that people want to push societal gender expectations onto female characters who don't conform. the expectations in question being performing femininity and attraction to men. I have a hard time believing it doesn't extend to a particular attitude about women irl :/

at the end of the day, I can analyze -society- all I want, but people are still going to do stuff like this and I can't stop them. I remember seeing Adora x Keith and Catra x Lance art as far back as season one when I searched Adora on google images -_- it's very much an attempt to straightify characters who many read as queer (correctly in the case of Catra and Adora!). I can't see it as anything other than vindictive and homophobic — even if that wasn't the conscious intent.
