If the US went vegan 350 MILLION more could be fed (new study)
When we say animal rights are human rights it is not just hyperbole. The welfare of nonhuman animals is intertwined with the welfare of human animals in a great variety of complex ways, with food security being one of them. Animal products are not sustainable for this planet or the number of people living on it. Instead of throwing money at numerous charities to feed those that, for whatever reason, do not have access to healthy food, we could actually fix the problem entirely simply by changing our diets.
Check out our website for more information on how veganism could save our planet.
Why Vegans Shouldn't Eat Organic Food
“Reasons why "organic foods" can actually be *more* harmful to the environment and the animals than conventional foods (and remember, there is currently NO EVIDENCE to support the claim that "organic foods" are healthier than conventional foods) 1) Fertilizer is animal-based (so not only is it supporting the animal agriculture industry, but it makes it so that the runoff from these farms could potentially be even more damaging than others as the soil contains higher levels of nitrogen (which is one of the main contributors to water pollution, coral bleaching, etc) 2) "Natural" pesticides are often more harmful as they are less specific in what/who they kill and often more is needed than if generic pesticides were being used 3) Overall yield is smaller (so more land needed to grow the same amount grown on a conventional farm)“
Definitely something to think about!
While Canada receives its fair share of summer heat, under the influence of unrestrained climate change, residents of our largest cities will likely be contending with tropical summers by the end of the century.
“The overall conclusion: Without swift action to limit climate change, Canadians in the most populous region of the country (the Windsor to Montreal corridor) will be able to have a tropical summer simply by staying at home. Population centres in other regions of the country, such as in the Prairies, on the west coast and on the east coast, may avoid dipping into the tropics, but their average summer temperatures will still climb significantly (for example, Calgary will feel more like Los Angeles).”
And no, “swift action” does not mean that we all just start taking shorter showers and using our bikes more (something which isn’t even an option for many people). It means that substantial changes must be made at both the commercial and individual levels. And as an individual, the absolute best thing you can do for the environment and our future is live vegan as much as is possible for you.

Yesterday (June 10th 2017), Toronto held its fifth March to Close All Slaughterhouses, along with dozens of other cities across five continents! Once again we had an incredible turnout with about 800 people participating!
As with the years before, we marched down all the major streets at the city’s core. We also did the die-in, where the activists laid down on the ground to symbolically represent the trillions of animals we tragically lose to the animal agriculture industry every single year, and to show solidarity. As we lay silent on the ground, screams recorded from dying animals inside actual slaughterhouses is broadcasted over a loud-speaker. Most likely, anyone passing by has never even seen the front of a slaughterhouse, let alone heard the horrific sounds that resound from inside; this is intentional on the part of the industry because, as Paul McCartney famously said, “if slaughterhouses had glass walls we would all be vegetarian”. This is one of the reasons for why the die-ins are such incredibly powerful demonstrations; they bring attention to the voices of those who are violently silenced. A newer addition to the march was the inclusion of a Direct Action Now disruption inside a “Whole Foods”, where some of the activists walked in and around the store while holding up their signs depicting the disturbing and heart-shattering reality that was the life of the animal whose flesh a customer is contemplating purchasing. These actions are called “disruptions” because they do precisely that, they disrupt the “normal” act of shopping for animal products, and in so doing, disrupt the speciesist mindset that allows for this shopping in the first place. Finally, towards the end of the march, a memorial was held for all the beautiful angels who have fallen victim to this incredibly cruel and violent system we have developed,.during which flowers and other items were symbolically laid beside pictures of a few of these lovely beings, who represented the plight of their entire species. All in all, it was an incredibly moving and powerful event, and we are CERTAIN that we planted seeds of compassion in many minds, and that at least one person will make a change in their lifestyle in order to show love, the love that we know each and every one of you has, even if it is currently buried deep inside, to all persons, whether animal or human.

Did you know that Climatevegan has its own merchandise? Because we do!
Care about the plight of these magnificent creatures? Want to help? Here are some ways:
- Stop eating fish. Contrary to popular belief, there are no “safe areas” where fish can be caught and have it not affect the whales who rely on these fish for food. There are simply too many people on this planet for the ocean to feed us and them. In fact, most scientists estimate that at the rate we are going, we could see fishless oceans by 2048. Furthermore, an average of 650 000 whales, dolphins, and seals are killed by fishing vessels EACH YEAR.
- Transition to a vegan lifestyle. Animal agriculture is responsible for 18% of greenhouse gas emissions (more than ALL transportation costs combined). And while this global industry is sending all these pollutants into our atmosphere, it is simultaneously destroying the plants and trees which are vital to the production of clean air, with animal agriculture being responsible for 91% of amazon destruction. These, combined with other factors, make animal agriculture one of the number one causes of climate change. With climate change comes the warming of our oceans. The warming of our oceans creates the perfect environment for algal blooms, which enjoy the resulting higher concentrations of phosphorous and nitrogen. These “blooms” lead to the death of coral via coral-bleaching and suck up the available oxygen in the water to the point where fish and other marine creatures cannot survive, thus creating a “dead zone”. As if this were not enough, runoff from farms, which includes huge amounts of animals waste, antibiotics, etc, leads to direct increases in nitrogen. For these reasons, animal agriculture has been named the NUMBER ONE CAUSE OF OCEAN DEAD-ZONES (along with water pollution in general, habitat destruction, and species extinction).

I just supported Compassion Is Not A Crime on @ThunderclapIt // @TorontoPigSave
After two years, the #pigtrial will be drawing to a close with the final sentencing happening this Thursday May 4th 2017. Here you will find information regarding the events happening that day such as the All Day Vigil for the pigs outside Fearman’s slaughterhell and when the sentencing is due to commence, for those who wish to show their support with their physical presence the day of.
Another fabulous way to show us and the pigs support is to join our Thunderclap campaign. This will help us draw more and more attention to the trial, and therefore, more and more attention to the pigs and other animals that are still suffering and having their lives taken from them each and every single day. The attention this trial has brought to The Save Movement has resulted in the creation of dozens upon dozens of new Save groups all around the world, with more starting up each month, and a countless number of people going veg as a result. This just goes to show the power of media attention when it comes to social change, and thunderclap is a great way to garner this attention and make one’s own noise/thunder.
After two years the #pigtrial, which has put a spotlight on the horrific treatment of farmed animals and got the public discussing whether any living being should be considered property, will come to and end with the sentencing happening May 4th. Please support our friends at The Save Movement, and more importantly, the animals on whose behalf they speak, but joining Toronto Pig Save’s Thunderclap campaign.
After literally years the Pig Trial will finally be coming to a close this Thursday March 9th 2017. Throughout the trial we have heard that Anita Krajnc, who has been criminally charged for giving water to a pig suffering from heat exhaustion and dehydration in the summer of 2015, acted out of concern for the animals, as well as the environment, and the health of her fellow humans. Experts upon experts have testified on topics ranging from the environmental devastation of a non-vegan diet to the incredible emotional and cognitive intelligence of farmed animals such as pigs. This trial, which stemmed from an attempt to silence Toronto Pig Save, has brought international attention to the fight for animal rights, and since the first court date years ago, hundreds of groups have been created in countries all over the world and have joined The Save Movement. It is for these reasons that we can confidently say, though we do not yet know the legal outcomes of this trial, that we have won, for any advancement in the world’s compassion for nonhuman animals is a victory in our eyes.
Please join us outside of the Burlington courthouse one last time to show the world that you know that giving water to a suffering being, to show them compassion, is not a crime!! Schedule: 8:00 am: Vigil at Fearmans slaughterhouse at the corner of Harvester Road and Appleby Line (821 Appleby Line, Burlington) 9:00-10:00 am: Vigil at the Burlington courthouse at 2051 Plains Rd E, Burlington, Ontario, L7R 5A5 10:00 am: Concluding arguments A simultaneous slaughterhouse vigil will take place at Fearmans pig slaughterhouse, 10 minute drive from the courthouse. If you are unable to attend, you can still follow! There will be live feed from both the courthouse and from the vigil on the Toronto Pig Save page. #CompassionIsNotACrime #PigTrial
President-elect Trump has called climate change a Chinese hoax, vowed to dismantle America's climate and clean energy policies, and appointed climate deniers with ties to the fossil fuel industry to his transition team and Cabinet. There is too much at stake for us to stay silent. Human-caused climate...
Just this last year we tragically passed an extremely crucial tipping point when it comes to how our actions will PERMANENTLY affect the future of our planet, and life on this planet. Although our society often seems to forget/ignore that our lives are inextricably tied to nature, we as humans are not escaping/will not somehow magically escape the absolutely disastrous effects of climate change; lives will be lost and yes, that will include human lives, possibly even the lives of your future children/grand-children. As stated in Rolling Stone magazine, “[now that this tipping point has been surpassed] sea levels could rise 10 times faster than previously predicted: 10 feet by 2065. The [scientists] included this chilling warning: If emissions aren't cut, "We conclude that multi-meter sea-level rise would become practically unavoidable. Social disruption and economic consequences of such large sea-level rise could be devastating. It is not difficult to imagine that conflicts arising from forced migrations and economic collapse might make the planet ungovernable, threatening the fabric of civilization””; so we very literally cannot afford to be taking steps backward. In fact, we cannot even afford to be standing still in one place; it is absolutely essential that, to save the future of everyone and everything that calls earth home, we move forward, and at a fast pace. Do not allow this one person to undo all the progress we as a society have made and you as an individual have made and continue to make with the goal of protecting and healing our one and only home.
Speaking of important ways in which individuals, such as yourself, can help fight climate change, did you know that living vegan is the most effective action you can take to this end? There are a whole host of explanations for why this is the case, but here I will only list a few:
-- A person who follows a vegan diet produces the equivalent of 50% less carbon dioxide, uses 1/11th the oil, 1/13th the water, and 1/18th the land of a meat-lover for their food. Furthermore, a person who eats vegan saves 1,100 gallons of water, 45 pounds of grain, 30 sq ft of forested land, 20 lbs CO2 equivalent, and one animal’s life
-- Animal agriculture is responsible for 18% of all greenhouse gas emissions. This is more than the total combined exhaust from all transportation
-- Farmed animals are responsible for 65% of all human-related emissions of nitrous oxide – a greenhouse gas with 296 times the global warming potential of carbon dioxide, and which stays in the atmosphere for 150 years. Reducing methane emissions would create tangible benefits almost immediately
-- Even without fossil fuels, we will exceed our 565 gigatonnes CO2e limit by 2030, all from raising animals
-- Fracking (hydraulic fracturing) water use (which is of great concern to environmentalists such as yourself) ranges from 70-140 billion gallons annually, while animal agriculture water consumption ranges from 34-76 trillion gallons annually
-- Only 5% of water consumed in the US is by private homes, whereas 55% of water consumed in the US is for animal agriculture. This means that while doing things such as taking shorter showers does help, it does and will not have nearly the same effect that cutting out animal products (such as milk, which for every 1 gallon produced, requires an input of 1000 gallons of water) does
-- Animal agriculture is responsible for 20%-33% of all fresh water consumption in the world today
-- Farmed animals cover 45% of the earth’s total land
-- Animal agriculture is the leading cause of species extinction (we are currently experiencing the largest mass extinction in 65 million years), ocean dead zones (farming operations on land have created 500 ocean dead-zones around the world), water pollution, and habitat destruction
-- As many as 2.7 trillion animals are pulled from the ocean each year. As a consequence of this, as well as pollution, we could see fishless oceans by 2048 (for every 1 pound of fish caught, up to 5 pounds of unintended marine species are caught and discarded as by-kill -- as many as 650,000 of these species are whales, dolphins and seals and 40-50 million are sharks)
-- Animal agriculture is responsible for up to 91% of Amazon destruction. This equals the loss of 1-2 acres of rainforest every second which results in the extinction of up to 137 plant, animal and insect species every day
-- 82% of starving children live in countries where much of the country’s cultivated food is fed to farmed animals whose bodies and products are then eaten by western countries. In fact, at least 50% of worldwide grain is fed to farmed animals. Were we to directly consume these grains, we would have enough food to very comfortably feed 10 billion people
Now remember, the above list includes only *some* of the main ways in which animal agriculture severely harms and destroys our planet, as well as the beings who rely on the health of this planet (that includes us - never forget that) to survive!! To learn more about the toxic and terrifying relationship animal agriculture maintains with climate change, check out our website and watch Cowspiracy, an extremely informative, non-graphic, meticulously researched, science-based documentary from which the above facts were obtained (references for each fact can also be found on their website).

Says Marc Ching from Animal Hope and Wellness:
“The owners and association that run one of the largest and oldest dog meat markets in South Korea, agree to close their slaughterhouses.
Not just the dog meat slaughterhouses, but all of them. The chicken slaughterhouses. The duck slaughterhouses. The rabbit slaughterhouses.
They told me that many local activists and international groups have lobbied and petitioned, asking for the same thing. They told me that when they come, all they do is argue and fight with them.
He said, “This is the first time ever, that someone has come asking how we can work together.”
He said, “You should feel lucky, because today is historic.”
Our first victory…
(Deeply rooted in tradition, Gupo Meat Market has been slaughtering animals for over a century.
Today marks the first time in history that they have agreed to make a change, accepting to work with our foundation.
While the process of emptying the cages still needs to be presented to the government, the hard part is over. Getting the dog meat traders themselves, to want to become something else.
This victory - let it be for the animals.)”
This post was taken from the Animal Hope and Wellness Facebook page where a short, yet beautiful video of a little dog being rescued from a slaughterhouse+farm which is currently being destroyed can be found. His name is Ari and he is one of 47 that were rescued yesterday. Thanks to this instrumental leap forward of the closing of this large slaughterhouse-chain, so many more Aris will be saved from their suffering.
While far from being the “first victory” for Animal Hope and Wellness on behalf of the animals (they have already saved the lives of hundreds, if not thousands, by dismantling individual slaughterhouses/farms and direct rescues), it is certainly one of the most monumental. And not just for the animals who are being fought for and represented by Marc Ching and Animal Hope and Wellness, but for all animals and the entire animal rights movement!! In addition to those that will be rescued, re-homed, and given a new chance at life, this victory also means that a vast number of chickens, ducks, dogs, and rabbits will now be spared from ever having to experience such sadness and pain.
Endless gratitude to Marc Ching, those who work with him, those who support him, and the “business” owners who are finally letting their true compassion shine!!
*All pictures belong to Animal Hope and Wellness and/or Marc Ching with the exception of the two pictures depicting the beautiful moment when Toronto Chicken Save, with the critical aid of Marc, rescued four chickens.
It is important that in the celebrations, we do not forget that the fight against the dakota pipeline is still on-going, and that the fight for the health of our dear mother earth through vegan activism is a long-term mission requiring compassion and dedication. Please make yourself aware of how you can continue to be a part of these efforts. Having said that though, it is also very important to put aside time for celebrations, feeling grateful, and self-care!!
Construction of the controversial Dakota Access Pipeline has been halted, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has told Standing Rock protesters.
Amazing and wonderful news!! And this victory is all thanks to the Water Protectors and their supporters. Let us, as environmental activists, learn from their incredible dedication and courage in protecting the rights of native persons, as well as the rights of mother earth.
Dakota Access oil pipeline protesters will not follow a government directive to leave the federal land where hundreds have camped for months.
