@cloak-enthusiast
I’m just saying what we’re all thinking.
Alya loved the winter time, even with the leaves gone the trees still managed to look beautiful with their adornments of snow and ice. There were snowball fights and fairy lights and ultimately..
“Hot cocoa! Thanks for the hookup Mari, your parents make the best hot cocoa in Paris!”
“Alya, I’ve sent you the recipe a dozen times, you can make it on your own.”
“But there’s something special about it when your family makes it!”
“No there’s no-” Marinette was cut off as Adrien said,
“I-Wow! This is really good! You gotta get me some more of this!”
“Back off Sunshine, the cocoa’s mine.”
Everyone laughed it off and they were soon heading for the site of their double date: The skating rink. Logically, Alya knew that Marinette and Adrien were already dating (though she did find it suspicious how quickly they got together) and though she didn’t need to set them up anymore, that instinct was still there. The plan was, due to Marinette’s clumsiness being exacerbated on ice, she would fall, and Adrien - being the gentleman that he is - would catch her.
She mentally patted herself on the back, because she was a genius. They should probably get her a Nobel prize or something, maybe some money? Now for her plan to fall in place.
She watched as Marinette wobbled over to the ice rink on her skates and gracefully stepped onto the ice- Wait, gracefully? Something wasn’t right, Marinette was never graceful.
Did Marinette just pirouette? When did she learn to do that?
“Nino, are you seeing what I’m seeing?”
“What. The. F u c k.”
“Yeah, I know.”
“You’d almost think she’s Ladybug with how graceful she’s being.”
“Pssh, Marinette as Ladybug? That’s crazy!”
Ironically as they said this Marinette was going through the motions of her Ladybug transformation sequence.
“I guess that makes Adrien her Chat Noir?”
“I mean, they’re actually quite in sync”
“But perfect, polite, Adrien, running around in a skintight leather catsuit all day? Nah.”
Privately, Nino disagreed as he had seen the ‘fireman’ pole in Adrien’s bedroom before.
“Yeah, couldn’t see it.”
T h u n k! Marinette had smashed into a wall like a bug on a windshield. There it was! Alya laughed at herself for thinking that Marinette could be Ladybug. If Marinette was Ladybug she would have figured it out in an instant. Marinette couldn't lie to save herself!
Ha, Marinette as Ladybug, what a novel thought...
So I know a lot of people rag on Chat Noir for making jokes in the times he definitely shouldn’t be but to me, it makes sense. Adrien was taught that when he was hurt, in a bad situation, or just not feeling very well in general, to push hose feelings aside and to just smile, smile like nothing’s wrong. But now Adrien is Chat Noir and the stakes are up and the pressure is higher and at any moment the world could literally be falling apart around him and he finds that smiles just don’t cut it anymore. When the pressure’s on he pretends it isn’t there, but now the pressure’s higher so he’s pretending harder. So he jokes and he flirts and he makes others smile. Adrien’s jokes as Chat Noir are just another manifestation of his deflection through comedy.
Prickly Thoughts
The little boy glared at Adrien and pointed “I will get you Mr. Evil Guy! Mark my words!” He shouted.
Adrien without hesitation responded,“Please, Mr. Evil Guy was my father, you can just call me Adrien.”
He hesitated, struck by memories he’d rather not remember and emotions he thought he’d buried. His smile faltered, the skin around his eyes seemed to crease and tighten, and his eyes themselves seemed to turn glassy while his shoulders slumped slightly.
Little Hugo spoke tentatively, “Daddy, do you not want to play anymore?”
Adrien seemed to snap out of whatever funk he was in as he gathered Hugo up in his arms and exclaimed “What!? No, nothing like that! Daddy just had a few prickly thoughts he needed to shoo away.”
Hugo nodded as if he understood.
“Adrien?” Marinette questioned as she came through the hallway, sidestepping pillow forts and long forgotten toys. “Did something happ-” her sentence cut off upon seeing Adrien as understanding dawned in her eyes, only to be replaced by sorrow.
“Honey, go play with your sister Emma.”
“But she-” He was cut off with a stern look and was soon on his way to torment his older sister.
As soon as Hugo was gone Marinette rushed over to Adrien and enveloped him in a warm hug as she sat down. She murmured “After what that man did to you he could at least have not left any lasting psychological damage.”
Adrien laughed a little at this but it didn’t last long. Tears pricked in his eyes. “You’d think after all this time I’d be over it, huh? You’d think after all this time I’d be a little bit stronger?” His voice cracked on the last word.
At that last sentence Marinette grabbed him by the shoulders and whispered to him fiercely.
“Never say that again! You’re the strongest person I know, anyone else would’ve cracked long ago but you still come out every day smiling. Your mother disappeared, your father neglected you, you had the weight of Paris’ safety resting on your shoulders almost daily, and your father turned out to be the emotional terrorist we were fighting, and he claimed to be doing it for your mother which put you in an impossible decision where you still chose the right path.” She took a breath to calm down and spoke again “Adrien you are the light of my life and the strongest person I know. We will be okay.”
The smile that broke out on Adrien’s face was far from bright, but to Marinette it seemed like the sun breaking out from behind a cloud. Marinette stood up and gave Adrien a kiss. Her work here done.
As she stood the oven dinged, letting her know that the cookies were ready. Before she could even open her mouth to call her kids, they were already waiting there ready to eat. Upon seeing this, she couldn’t help but laugh.
Hugo walked over his father, “So, are the prickly thoughts gone now?”
Adrien looked around his house, at his still laughing wife, his beautiful children, and the smell of cookies already tempting him and responded, “Yeah, I think they are.”
