These are leaf cutter ants! They harvest leaves to take back to their nest. They don’t eat the leaves but instead feed it to a fungus they tend to and eat. These guys are farmers and the leaves are fertilizer. Such fascinating little creatures!

Holy fuck, I love leafcutter ants so much. They FARM. THEY FARM. Think about that!!! These insects practice agriculture!!! (in a loose sense of the word.)

They can carry 50x their body weight!! They have a bite force of 2,600 times their body weight!!!

And they also can massively transform the forest where they live! There will be so many of them that they will wear down visible paths into the floor of the rainforest!!

Their colonies are massive, too. Both in terms of physical space and number of ants. The central mound can be over 30m / 98ft wide, and the total area of a nest can be 30-600 square meters or 320-6,460 square feet! Over 3.5 million ants can live in one nest!!

There's also over 40 species of things that we call "leafcutter ants". (They're only found in Central and South America, Mexico, and a few parts of the southern US.)

Fun Fact, if you happen to live in the Midwestern US (or are ever visiting there for any reason), the Cincinnati Zoo in Ohio has a massive leaf cutter ant colony that runs basically the entire length of a building (which is meant to allow them to practice their natural behavior of traveling long distances to collect that fertilizer!). And their actual home colony space is set up so you can see into it, kind of like a MASSIVE version of those ant-farms people had as kids.

You can actually look and see the difference between the guards and the workers, and it's really cool! And if you sit there long enough you can watch them cut off pieces of leaves (which is also very cool to watch) and set off down the tunnel for home.
