I really love the moments in Jean's book where he doesn't understand the meaning of a word or doesn't know how to say something in English, so he asks someone for help. I love how patient and kind everyone is, explaining it with synonyms or examples instead of making him feel embarrassed. As someone whose first language isn't English, I so feel Jean in moments like this. It's such a small detail, but I rarely see it in books

There’s a bit in TGR when Jeans flustered by Jeremy learning French only for him and instead of saying the words were stuck in his throat, they’re “caught somewhere between his lungs and teeth”.

It’s such a good detail to me because 1) it highlights the detail OP’s is talking about and 2) it’s also using terms Jean is likely to have heard from being checked on from games or from threats he’d heard from the ravens. Throat is less likely to be mentioned than teeth and lungs, so it’d make sense that in a moment of being caught off guard, he’d default to those words rather than a common English phrase.

I want so many things for Jerejean, but one the main things? Their naps together.

Neither hot to sleep because they were kept too busy and had to sleep in small increments whenever they could. The actual progress of both getting to sleep and feel safe and the nap isn’t even because they’re that tired, they’re just happy and comfortable now.

Let’s play the fun game of what am I describing, some of the plot of 1984 or what the nest was like:

Even the closest people are trained to betray each-other for the most powerful person

There’s actual truth and the truth the powerful people decided was the truth and the followers refuse to listen or believe the actual truth and can’t conceptualise the actual truth because they are no longer able to go against the powerful people’s word

There’s two people who aren’t entirely indoctrinated by the powerful people and they form a bond which is eventually ruined because they were forced into a situation where one would be hurt/ face their biggest fear and betrays the other, damaging and basically ending the bond they had

The characters conform to what the powerful people say because that is an easier reality to live in as being in a mindset which opposes everyone else is torturous and makes them realise how boring and miserable their life actually is

Conformity is expected

Basically they were raised in an environment adjacent to a totalitarian society just in a concentrated group of people. And now I’m going to go cry into my pillow

The house we got them from we think she was on stuff because it smelt so strongly of it, they were taken away from their mum too quickly so they didn’t grown properly and they are also a bit aggressive and don’t like new people, or really anyone but me. They’re finally getting comfortable with other people (they’re 4 now) and they also used to really not like each other but are mostly fine now. Also their names start with the same letters. My Shayla’s for both sets of siblings 😭

It’d be so funny in tbc if when it’s the joint birthday party, because Jeans never celebrated before his birthday he thinks the tradition of standing around someone who has cake that’s kind of on fire while you sing to them is weird, so the Trojans either say the song or do the thing where you only sing birthday.

Okay hear me out on this, but imagine the Perfect court was some kind of a social experiment Tetsuji conducted. STAY WITH ME FOR THIS.

So Tetsuji has Riko fully under his care with no other input from someone who cares, already showing signs of being unstable, and the Jean Moreau is being used to pay his parents debts. And why not? Why not test to see how far you can push someone. So he asks for Jean to be given to him, turn him into an investment and make the family more money.

It doesn’t take much to push Riko out more into his insanity, just telling him he has power and that does it for him, snapping and becoming the monster when he gets ahold of Jean.

Jean understandably breaks after a few months under Riko’s care, and Tetsuji watches this, and then Jean promises to Kevin to keep living and Kayleigh dies, and who is there to stop Tetsuji from making this worse?

The Raven team is used as somewhat of a smaller experiment to see how far people can be pushed physically and mentally, but also to see how far Jean can be pushed, what happens when even after he’s broken and been dragged further into misery, to be torn apart time and time again in such a controlled and regulated manner of the Ravens strict regiments and 16 hour days? How far can Kevin be mentally ruined, being forced to watch the suffering yet still feel such an attachment to the man inflicting it? How far can Riko go with the power he was given over a team and the cult following he amassed?

There’s copious journals documenting their deterioration and diary’s for injuries and worse, because eventually it was easier to record them by the date rather than filling out a medical record sheet.
