I saw your posts about living in a desert (extremely cool!!) and I was wondering what your favourite native species is that you see in your area? ive never seen a desert in real life cause I live by the sea so I'd love to know what sorta cool animals and plants you see!! (and in return, my favourite native species in my area are gannets and humpback whales!)

in the cold they turn into little pom poms to expose the underside of their feathers to the sun to warm up

they are produced through parthenogenesis so they don't reproduce with an another animal- they're asexual and they're all female!

the western diamondback rattlesnake is very cool, though I've never seen one myself. they're deeply misunderstood creatures. they're not aggressive at all and don't want to strike at you. they only really bite people when you (nearly) step on them or you pick them up (don't do that). for the most part, if you get near them they'll just run off

I am Corvid and therefore must talk about corvids. these are the pinyon jay (left) and woodhouse's scrub jay (right). woodhouse's scrub jay is my all time favorite jay.

Albuquerque is home to over 100 species of bird, many of whom are supported by the bosque (the stretch of cottonwood forest that runs along the rio grande).

I've never seen a mountain lion but they have definitely seen me. we have a ton of them here, people just don't realize it. they have a bad reputation because they will very rarely kill people. the vast majority of mountain lions are uninterested in humans and will, more often than not, actively avoid humans. we know this from numerous studies done tracking mountain lion activity near hiking trails across the country. the mountain lions actively avoided human interaction in all studies that I know of.

the main reason that people will get attacked by a mountain lion is not maliciousness, it is startling a mountain lion with kittens. mountain lions are very protective of their kittens. a good way to avoid this is to make noise while hiking. when a mountain lion is aware of your presence it will almost always leave the area and bring its kittens with it.

this is technically the great plains in new mexico, not the desert (though honestly eastern NM is both) but here's the lesser prairie chicken. I've also never seen one of these (I'm in the wrong part of the state) but the males look really silly so I had to include one
