God I feel absolutely emotionally exhausted this week. But at least I can recognise the low point and have my own support system.

Cried my eyes out on the tram to work yesterday because I made the mistake of thinking about a friend's wedding song that very likely will soon be his funeral song.

And I feel so sad for what he's going through, for what they're going through. When he's discharged he'll likely have an at home hospital bed so they've likely slept beside each other for the last time and what a simple pleasure to cruelly lose. And it's the small things like that I'm already grieving for them.

Lately, I feel like I'm often on the edge of panic. My chest feels tight and I catch myself and acknowledge the feeling. I tell myself I don't have anything to be panicking over.

My mom is stuck in an exhausting situation that takes up every second of her day that she can't get out of and my best friends partner is dying. They have real issues. But also then I feel like I can't talk to them, because they have real issues.

Fuckkk... I think I just need a holiday.

How far back in time can you understand English?

An experiment in language change

Nifty little language game here.

I can read back to 1500 with basically no difficulty

at 1400 I have to read slowly and carefully, but I can understand all of it save a couple words

at 1300 I can still comprehend most of it if I read slowly, but a much larger percentage of the words are unfamiliar to me, even with context

1200 and earlier are almost totally unintelligible

Thanks to mandatory Old English at Oxford a very long time ago, I can just barely make out the major plot developments all the way back to 1000 but it's a question of slowly sounding out one word at a time and even then I'm missing a lot of detail.

Choices

This morning has me questioning just how much choice we have in who we are as people. I feel like we do and we can come to recognise our traits and choice paths that recognise our traits and steer our lives in the way we'd like. We can understand the reasons why we make the same decisions or routines, patterns of behaviour and then choose to make changes, educate ourselves, give ourselves the knowledge to make the changes we want easier to achieve.

But then I look at others who seem absolutely doomed to repeat the same decisions over and over and over. Mistake after mistake, because they don't know better? Because they're stuck in the same mental rut? Don't seek assistance? Think they know better? Year after year just stay in the same place.

I don't understand it.
