“Learning is great. Believing is different. I think healthy skepticism is a better approach.” He returned the small, wry smile. At least from what he’d observed, believing in things too hard only led to trouble, usually for other people. Then again, maybe he would be happier if he’d been able to give himself wholly to something like that.

He listened quietly to her explanation and found it easy to empathize. Being afraid to lose something had cost him a lot in the past too. He was trying not to let it cost him anything else. “Nobody makes their best choices when they’re grieving or scared. And I guess knowing that’s a problem for you is a good first step. It doesn’t mean you won’t repeat it, but at least you’ve got some warning.”

He tipped his head back against the wall, smiling easily. “Well, that’s the most important part.” They’d already agreed they were friends and established that he was in a relationship, so he didn’t take the comment at more than face value. He probably wouldn’t have anyway. Until James literally stumbled back into his life, he hadn’t believed he was ready for more than friendship with anyone.

“Acceptable terms,” he agreed, offering his phone for her to text herself. More than was necessary, even, but he probably would have wanted to do the same and dinner wasn’t unreasonable. “Just text me the time and place? My weekend is pretty open.”

“Perhaps. There’s also a lot to be said for just absorbing what you learn and discarding what doesn’t fit from your day-to-day life. I don’t know if I could live under a banner of healthy skepticism. Maybe a banner of ‘oops, that’s not what I meant to do and now I’m not repeating it.’ But that’s too long to mention as a life philosophy.” By the end, it was more of a distracted musing than outright talking to him. She offered him a closed-mouth smile at his words of comfort. “Yeah, that’s true. Part of me feels like I’ve been in a perpetual cycle of grieving since I was sixteen and, you know, maybe now is the time to stop repeating old habits.” She bit her lip. “At least the potential boyfriend right now is way different from that other one. But it’s freaking me out because he’s, like, a man. He’s a single dad, so whatever we do is guaranteed to be serious because he’s not really in that casual time of life where you can just fuck someone and be in a different country by sunrise.” She accepted his phone and, with probably way less caution than she should’ve had considering all the epic overshares, she typed her number in and then sent herself a text. She may have listed her name as ‘NavelGazing Extrovert’ in his phone, complete with the rolling eyes emoji, but details. “I will. Thank you for this.”

🩰 = is there a type of fashion your muse prefers, or do they not pay attention to their appearance at all?

Her style is loose and airy, maybe a little Bohemian. That applies to clothing and scents. Underneath it all, she's the opposite of utilitarian and will be wearing either something sexy or nothing at all. The appearance of it is effortless, and she's really not fussy about it, but she definitely has an aesthetic.

🐺 = does your muse have trouble relying on others? why or why not?

Generally speaking, yes. She's been on her own for most of her adult life in every way - emotionally, physically, and financially. That's all been her choice, living more nomadically, kind of like an expat but not entirely, and philanthropically than anything else. Historically, it's not that she has trouble relying on others so much as she doesn't stay in one place long enough or develop a relationship enough to rely on someone. In terms of romantic attachment, she's very emotional and will fall in love over and over, but she doesn't stick around just for the sake of love, either.

👻 = does your muse have regrets? what are some of their deepest ones?

Anytime she's cut and run on someone, it comes with a certain amount of regret. She doesn't dwell on it, though, because she's never been with anyone long enough to be willing to stay. There was one time, one ultimatum she kind of regrets, but at the same time, the end of that story was probably coming regardless of the details. She just broke both of their hearts in the process.

“Uh..” Walking hadn’t been Chandler’s first choice in transportation, but he didn’t want to tell Carly no. “We can. Absolutely. The weather is beautiful.” And the walk wouldn’t be that bad. He mentally calculated the distance between the restaurant where they were and the place he had in mind for them. The art gallery of a friend Chandler happened to have an access badge too. It was half a dozen blocks away give or take. They could do that. Less than a mile. He opened the door for Carly on their way out and kept his pace in stride with hers as they began to walk.

“So, how was your day?” They hadn’t spoken much. He’d been busy. Classes were out, but he used school breaks to focus more on his art. Summer also meant his daughter was home more, and she was a ball of energy. Only five but full of personality and wit. He wondered what Carly would think of her, but even more what Elodie would think of her. She’d never known her mother. It’d only ever been them.

“You look great.” As if she needed to be told. “By the way.” The dress was practically made for her. Hugging all the rights spots and exposing the rest for easy access. His eyes unashamedly took her in as they moved, watching as her steps made her lithe body bounce in some of Chandler’s favorite ways. “I’m glad you agreed to go out with me.”

His hesitation, however slight, made her grin a little. Apparently, she was throwing curve balls of her own. As they left the restaurant and settled into their walk, she couldn’t stop the errant thought that at least she was on the shorter side, so it would be easier for him to keep up. Before she could offer up any kind of commentary or question, he was doing it for her. And she sorta uncharacteristically hated his question. Usually, she could find a way to neutralize strong feelings about a day, but this day had been a relentless asshole and she wanted to forget, excluding the present moment, it had happened. She felt like the question put her at a bit of a crossroads. She hadn’t wanted to dump anything on him during their first official date, afraid of breaking something new and delicate with her heavy truths. However, it also felt like an opportunity to open up a little. In its own way, that was also a test.

She had to wonder how much of her thinking had to do with the wine she’d consumed while she was getting ready. In the end, she decided to lead with that by way of explanation, and she tried to keep her voice light. “Well, let’s just say I drank half a bottle of wine before I got here, and I’m hoping you can complete the day’s turnaround. No pressure, the bar is fairly low.” She smiled over at him. “How was your day?”

His compliment had her slipping her hand into his free one as they walked. It was an innocent gesture that almost felt a little off, just because they’d engaged in so many way less innocent things. For all that, though, it also felt like comfort and ease. She didn’t hate it overall. “Thanks. Well, I mean, the sex alone is reason enough to say yes. If you can do that, I wanted to see what kind of a date you could plan. It hardly seems fair you can do both, but here we are. I’m not complaining.”

More or less. Chandler had to laugh. The sound was too loud. He tried to hide it with a cough after, but a few students turned to look. Quickly, he scolded them to pay attention to the film. It was several minutes after that he finally spoke again. Once he was sure no one was still looking. “Today?” Carly didn’t strike Chandler as someone who didn’t get what they want. On the contrary, he imagined she got everything she wanted. He, certainly, was inclined to give her absolutely anything. “Yes.” Except for today because he still had the will to resist.

The credits for the film began to roll and Chandler stood. He purposely scraped his chair loudly against the floor as he did. A few students groaned in response, and even more joined in on complaining when he flipped the lights. “Did you enjoy that?” The question was posed to the entire class but intended for only one student. He didn’t watch to see if she caught it but instead continued on with the class.

At the start of the following week Chandler canceled all of his classes. His daughter was sick with the flu, and there was no one else to take care of her. He sent an email out to his students that cited a personal absence and thought they’d all enjoy a week off. All but, maybe, one. He didn’t know if she enjoyed their time together as much as he did. It’d be inappropriate to ask, and he was trying to avoid being inappropriate. Unsuccessfully at the moment because after the email went a text message directly to Carly;

Chandler: I’m out with my sick kid.

Chandler: If you were wondering.

The last part was unnecessary, but he wanted to know if she was wondering.

Carly smirked and issued a comment out of the side of her mouth. “Well, that depends on what I want. It also depends on if you’re the source of it,” she pointed out, more to see how he would respond than anything else. It wasn’t a test, exactly. It was more of a tease, part of her master plan for the entire semester.

In reality, though, he did have a class to tend to, other responsibilities she honestly had no scope for, and she stayed silent as he poked and prodded the class.

The following week, according to a university-based email, the reindeer games were paused. A vague sense of disappointment filled her, but she refused to give it too much leeway, and instead toyed with the idea of checking to see if he was okay. That was maybe her first clue (or should’ve been) that it was all more than a game. Before she committed -- a shock to no one -- he reached out first. While it wasn’t an easy thing to forget, his status as a father, it also wasn’t something that sat forefront in her mind. The reminder, the idea that she was messing with someone’s dad, gave her some paused before she returned the text, a less flirtatious response than she might have mumbled to him in his class while the other students were distracted.

Carly: I don’t know if wondering is the word, but something like it. Carly: Is she gonna be okay?

He gave her an easy smile and gave the dog some more room on her leash and patted her softly. “Go ahead, it’ll make her day,” he chuckled a bit, knowing she was spoiled to being loved on all the time. “Alpine, have a seat and introduce yourself,” he instructed. She sat her fluffy white butt down with a soft wuff and extended her paw.

While Carly had little experience with dogs, or cats, she loved them. They were so often vibrant, a little unpredictable, but also generally sweet. She’d always thought the affection from a well-loved pet was one of the purest forms of love and devotion. (Of course, that meant she was terrified of it.) “Oh, my God, Alpine, you are beautiful,” Carly said, turning her attention to the dog at the expense of her handsome owner. “Thank you for letting me say hello.” She shook the offered paw and then moved to scratch the pup’s chin and ears. After her fingers were working gently through the thick, soft fur did she redirect to Alpine’s companion. “Thank you, to you both. This is definitely making my day. I’m Carly.”

“Never cared for the idea.” His parents were holiday Christians, and he’d moved even further away from it as he got older. Eternal torment didn’t sit well with him, and that wasn’t taking into account all the real-world issues with organized religion. He believed in something. He had to believe there was something looking out for them, some sort of life after death, but he wasn’t arrogant enough to think he had the one right answer.

“Good to know your options.” He was in no position to judge how someone handled their problems. The walk of shame had never been his style, but he’d done his share of drinking to forget. He’d stopped when he realized it didn’t work and that was no kind of life. There was no drinking away grief, or crying it away, or running from it. There was just learning to live with it.

He was quiet while she spilled her story. It seemed like the kind of thing she needed to get out. A therapist would have been a better person to tell, but sometimes it was easier to lay it out for someone you never planned to see again. “I’m sorry. I can’t imagine how hard that is to deal with on your own.” He could relate on the high school boyfriend, except for the ultimatum part. He kind of wished it had been that simple for them. “Nothing hurts like first heartbreak. But if you were getting everything you needed out of it, I don’t think you would have resorted to an ultimatum.” Then again, he hadn’t made his best choices at eighteen.

“Nah. I had an idea what I was getting into when I came over here.” He offered a smile in reassurance. She hadn’t looked sad so much as crushed by the weight of life. Now, he knew it was both. “If you want some help with that, I’m not bad at lifting heavy stuff. No shame required. I can probably get my boyfriend to help too.” He probably wouldn’t even ask; he didn’t know if James should be lifting boxes after his injury, but Grant wouldn’t put it past him to offer anyway. He was sweet like that.

“Me, either,” she sighed. Carly aimed a close-lipped smile his way. “I think it’s fascinating to look at what other cultures believe. I’m always up to learn, I just don’t necessarily buy into it.” She’d learned from plenty of people who were very passionate about their beliefs, and some who were also very passionate in sharing those beliefs. It still hadn’t translated into anything she presently applied, because her life was too much about the present. She relaxed as he validated and maybe even applied some meaning. After a quiet moment where she was absorbing and turning his words over, she nodded. “You’re probably right. I was coming off a really hard loss, and I was very afraid I was going to lose him the same way, which means I didn’t have the safety or security I probably needed. We were so close, I guess I hadn’t thought of it that way. Either way, I know the problem was more with me and less with him. That concept has really dictated a lot of my adulthood, if I’m being honest.” For a stranger, he could’ve saved her many awkward hours of conversation with her mom, who was a little too close to the situation to provide the insight he provided. If she hadn’t lived under the same roof as a psychologist for so long, this exchange alone probably would’ve saved her thousands in therapy, too.

His admission of foresight made her chuckle. “Well, thank you.” She sighed. “You probably look really good doing it, too.” She didn’t mean anything by it. She’d always carefully compartmentalized her friendships versus her romantic relationships. For as big of a mess as she made on a regular basis, that was one area she felt fairly confident in. However, the lack of crossover in the years since the first time she’d really mixed those concepts also probably explained why she’d never had a serious relationship. Maybe, it occurred to her, you should lean on Chandler for this stuff.

She rubbed her hands over her face and, on a deep exhale, relaxed and let go of all the hard feelings for the day. “That is really kind of you. Maybe I could buy you dinner to say thank you. Even if your boyfriend doesn’t want to help a total stranger move, I could probably thank him for sharing you, too. I’m sure your time is valuable.”

The weight of his body, pressed firm against the desk, made the furniture creak. In the dark room the sound seemed deafening, but no one turned to look. Chandler reasoned no one heard it either, except maybe the hot blond in front of him.

“And do you always get what you want, Carly?” There was something about saying her name he liked very much.

A smile was prevalent in his hushed voice. Chandler was grateful for the dark. It hid the expression on his face. Which gave him away as a man bewitched by a woman; an artist by his muse. He didn’t know how he’d last the semester like this. Close enough to touch but denied the right. Chandler wondered how she felt about it all, but asking about her urges was probably as inappropriate as acting on his.

She did hear the desk creak as he leaned, but it wasn’t as alarming as it would have been without the movie actually pulling some kind of focus. Even if people weren’t paying strict attention, they definitely weren’t paying attention behind them. The pedestrian sound filled her with anticipation of what would be next, though. And his words didn’t disappoint. Without looking, she could use her active imagination to remember and to envision how his tongue curled around her name, holding it almost softly in his mouth as he waited for her to answer his question.

“More or less,” she supplied by way of an answer. “Do I strike you as someone who doesn’t?”

“I’ve learned my lesson, honestly,” Evie snorted. She dug through her bag to find a protein bar, her lifeblood as of late. “If anything, it’s always a good laugh. It’s good to get a grasp on your audience. They’ll either think you’re a genius or you’re insane. All the good people are.”

Carly chuckled. “I’d like to think he’s enamored enough he thinks I’m both,” she replied. “I guess if he’s not, it’s a sign I should consider finding someone else. Unless I’m looking for not enamored. I guess I haven’t thought about that.”

“Ah, right. That rings a bell. Literal, wasn’t it? Weighing hearts after death.” He struggled with the concept of judgement, or maybe it was just that the idea of keeping count of all his mistakes made him tired. Life was already exhausting and full of judgement. Death should at least be peaceful.

“Nice to meet you, Carly. Always nice when the schedule works out in your favor.” He smiled. He preferred to have his mental breakdowns at home without an audience, but it wasn’t always an option. She looked like a lot had crashed in on her all at once. “What brings you here? Besides existential despair.”

“I think so,” Carly said, just a little hesitant. It had been a really, really long time since she’d studied any sort of afterlife culture. “I guess I should know who could potentially send me to hell. Or whatever they call it.”

She supposed, at this point, the conversation could’ve been offensive to someone who had strong religious convictions. Using the way he’d sat by her and continued to not smite her as a metric, she was going to guess he wasn’t that bothered.

“Yeah, it sets me up pretty well for a Shame-Walk Saturday,” she agreed. “Which, of course, comes after Forget Everything Friday.” She rolled her head against the wall to look over at him, not bothering to pick any part of her body up for something resembling independence for a moment. “My mom is sick. Like... forgets everything about herself, others, time and space sick.” It was so much easier than stating the clinical diagnosis. “And today, while I was visiting her, she knew who I was -- which was great. Except she forgot I’m an adult now and asked about my high school boyfriend who.... let’s just say it was that epic first-love kind of heartbreak. It’s been years and it still stings. But she just had to point out how much he loves me. And... he probably did, right up until I gave him an ultimatum that backfired.”

She let out a sharp breath. “So. I really needed to keep working on packing up her house so I can sell it, but I just couldn’t do the trip down memory late. Which means Shame-Walk Saturday just got a lot more complicated, probably.” She raised her eyebrows. “Wow. That felt good. But I bet you were sorry you asked about five minutes of exposition ago.”

Kat softened a bit, “all of them?” she asked quietly. It felt painful enough the few times she had softened herself enough to be vulnerable, to be emotionally intimate with another person. She couldn’t imagine how anyone could ever be that vulnerable with so many people. Maybe it was more she couldn’t imagine that for herself. To give someone a power over her heart, to allow them a chance to really hurt her- it felt detrimental but she couldn’t help but admire Carly a bit for having a heart that appeared as soft as water.

Kat tapped her nose, “Solidarity there my friend…but just some unasked for advice so feel free to tell me to blow out my ass- I was a kid raised with the mask of perfect structure. And I have the scars to prove the demand of structure.” Not that she regretted how hard her mother pushed her for perfection- sometimes Kat couldn’t tell who demanded it more. Dottie or herself. “Sometimes all a kid wants is love- the rest comes, but hey far be it for me to tell anyone what to do with their womb. I’d be a shit mom myself so my advice is probably no good.”

Kat shivered, “well that puts him into a bit more perspective.” Kat was mildy releived when Carly stood up on her own; she was afraid she was going to have to bring the booze to her just for a little liquid courage. A total look of seriousness washed over her face, “I never say no to dancing.” She looped her arm with Carly’s. “If I do shoot me because I’ve been body snatched.” Kat led her in a little jaunty walk towards the nearest drinking establishment. A little dance club hidden away in the basement of a sandwich shop. Kat liked a little mystery with her alcohol- “I bet we can drink for free with just a little bit of effort.” To punctuate her point Kat adjusted her dress revealing more cleavage.

“Yeah, I don’t really have a ton of self-preservation, as it turns out. I’m pretty good at running before it gets super sticky most of the time, though. When it’s a little acknowledgment something was fun or someone was really kind to me once, it’s not as heartbreaking. I would say I’ve only had one or two really great heartbreaks. The rest were just a couple days of downtime.” Really, in her case, it was more about longevity, and she didn’t really allow that.

She sighed. “Yeah, I can see how that would be. I just think kids need someone they can count on, someone who is really in their corner. My mom was great at doing that for me. But I.... have some shit to work through and wouldn’t be able to pay it forward, I don’t think.” She bit her lip. “Well, thanks for the insight, though, even if it was unsolicited.

Carly stood and looped arms and followed, very into this turn of events. She laughed as Kat adjusted her clothes. “I bet you’re right. It’s been a long time since I played this game. I used to be pretty good at it, though.” She snapped her fingers and ended the snap with a point in Kat’s general direction. “How opposed are you to kissing me if you need to? In spite of the drama, I swear I brushed my teeth.”

“You come here to escape the oppressive heat?” Kat commented tossing a few pieces into her mouth. She enjoyed the movies, whenever things were too much, too quick- too anything and she needed an escape she could be found hiding in the dark, blowing every dime she had to see every movie in the theater.

Popcorn for lunch and dinner- tho she was happy to see a familiar face.The smile that followed suit Kat took up an all too serious stance, holding a piece of popcorn carefully between her fingers before arching it into the air towards Carly’s mouth. “I could have been int he WNBA if only I was taller.”

“Abso-fucking-lutely,” Carly confirmed with feeling. She’d gotten used to tropical heat-to-humidity ratios once upon a time, but those days were largely behind her. She needed new coping mechanisms for a new climate.

As Kat adjusted her stance, so did Carly, dipping back on her knees like she was ready to jump for it if she had to. (Even though that was probably total bullshit and less dedication than she would show to get a kernel of popcorn.)

“You and me both,” she confirmed after catching the kernel tossed nearly perfectly. “Except by WNBA, I mean anything athletic and by taller, I mean more dedicated. Wanna go for two?”

Earlier in the week, Chandler had made reservations at a nice restaurant in town and asked Carly to meet him there. It felt like the right thing to do. Dinner was a typical first date, and he couldn’t really call what they’d been doing dating unless they did something with clothes on. Yet, as he sat at the bar top nursing a drink while he waited for Carly to arrive he decided this wasn’t him. He didn’t find a crowded dining hall, no matter how upscale, romantic. So, he changed their plans.

By the time Carly finally arrived he’d given up their table and ordered takeout instead. He made assumptions about her meal based on the few times he’d seen her eat but was mostly just hoping she wasn’t too picky and would appreciate the spontaneity. They still had a lot of actually getting to know one another, and this would be apart of that trial and error.

When he saw her come in he noticed an unfamiliar expression on his face. He didn’t know her well enough yet to place its origin. The moment they made eye contact it mored into a smile so wide and warm Chandler forgot all about the near frown that had been there just seconds before. That was one of his favorite things about Carly. She made everything else in the room cease to matter the moment she spoke or even cracked a grin. “Hey.”

There was a dirty minded remark about making her sorry on the tip of Chandler’s tongue, but before he could say any more than his generic greeting a waitress approached with their bagged food. It was perfect timing. He didn’t want to linger in the restaurant and waste more of their night together. Time was limited when a babysitter was on the clock. “Are you ready to go? I know this isn’t exactly what we talked about but…” He shrugged sort of sheepishly. “I won’t make you take an uber to our destination.” If he had known she didn’t drive Chandler would’ve picked Carly up, but that didn’t mean he couldn’t take her home. Which seemed like the best part.

He gave her a leading hey, blessedly not commenting on the fact she was almost ten minutes late. Carly relaxed a little further when he didn’t call her out, even if it was because he was interrupted by a bag of food. Well, he was interrupted by a person, but that person was bringing a bag stacked with takeout containers.

Something on her insides did something chaotic she couldn’t quite describe.

She loved the change of plans, even though she’d barely known the plans to begin with. and the spontaneity of it. She thrived in those moments when something knocked her a little off balance, especially when it was a good something that knocked into her. At least, today, half of her felt that way. The other half protested mightily. She was dressed for dinner in a restaurant and probably some easy-access fooling around. She was mentally prepared to handle that much, to add into an overwhelming day. She wasn’t prepared for something entirely unknown. And, the reality was, she didn’t know him well enough to have any idea what he might have in store.

After a moment of chewing on the inside of her lip, she tried her best to let the more casual response lead the way. “Yeah, okay. Is it somewhere we can walk to? Walking would be.... good.” It would be a good way to buy some time to tamp down the less neutral part of her response.

While Chandler had seen the film a dozen times at this point and played a role in its production, for the life of him, he couldn’t recount a single moment of the last two odd hours. His mind had been distracted. Purposely, he assumed but couldn’t know. He only had eyes for her. A lithe silhouette, occasionally illuminated by the flash of a screen. Those were his favorite moments, the ones in which he could really see, whatever she was doing. Intentionally or otherwise. It nearly drove him insane.

When Carly finally spoke to him, damn near at the end of the film, Chandler exhaled. He normally sat at his desk for these things, in the comfort of his cushion chair, but he knew given the opportunity she’d speak to him. What rules was he really breaking if she started it? “Lucky me–” He learned forward to speak. His voice a whisper of breathe against the back of her neck. “To fuck–” Okay, so he was definitely breaking at least a few rules. “–and to date are not synonymous.”

When his breath hit the back of her neck, she honestly didn’t know if she was the winner here, or the loser. Did she care? Chances were good she did not, because his words soaked through her without any kind of restraint or consideration. She didn’t turn toward him, though they were fairly isolated in the back, instead keeping her eyes on the screen and speaking from the side of her mouth. “Not always, but I’m getting older. Maybe my upcoming birthday has me wanting them to be. Then what will you do?”
