he’s folding both of his arms over his chest, ducking his head down to try and shadow his bemused expression that crosses his features with a downwards twitch of his lips – she likely saw him as cold and jaded. but that was okay ; he had to be. for the amount of blood that he felt weighed down his shoulders from every solider that died under his watch, it was better that he be jaded than to let those younger suffer the guilt of it. besides, someone who splintered more easily could not lead – he couldn’t be that way.

“you … want to know how i am?” he echoes, both parts disbelieving and patronized at the younger girl as he quirked a brow at her. “i’m fine, you don’t need to worry about my well being when you have bigger things you should be deciding – like your placement.”

PAIGE  CLOSED  her  eyes.  were  she  a  different  person,  she  might  have  imagined  a  better  world.  a  world  without  the  walls,  without  the  titans,  without  the  constant  threat  of  death  hanging  over  them.  she  wasn’t  sure              she  would  like  that  world,  that  future.  she  honestly  would,  but  paige  lived  in  the  present.  she  lived  in  the  moment,  taking  every  second  as  something  precious  &  important,  no  matter  how  horrible  or  mundane.  it  was  just  the  way  she  was.  

           ❛   of  course  i  do,   ❜  paige  answered,  like  it  was  the  most  obvious  thing  in  the  world.  everyone  deserved  to  be  worried  about,  even  if  just  about  how  they  were  doing  at  the  particular  moment.  she  had  a  lot  of  things  to  worry  about,  all  of  them  did,  &  she  decided  a  long  time  ago  that  he  was  one  of  them.   ❛   i  don’t  need  to  worry  about  your  well  being,  but  i  want  to.  i  like  to  think  we’re  friends.   ❜

IT  WAS  a  rare  moment  alone,  after              everything.  it  had  all  happened  very  fast.  paige  wasn’t  too  sure  on  the  details,  everything  had  moved  &  she  was  pulled  along  with  the  current  of  time,  energy  &  frantic  chaos.  rose  had  scarcely  left  her  side.  she  was  glad  for  it,  having  her  sister  at  her  side  every  after  all  this.

but  it  left  little  time  for  introspection.  she  hadn’t  the  proper  chance  to  digest  what  had  happened.  not  yet.  not  when  rose  needed  her  to  be  the  same  as  she  always  was.  &  paige  could  understand  that.  she  didn’t  mind              they  all  lost  a lot.  paige  didn’t  mind  giving  her  this.

         ❛   i’m  sorry  to  have  put  you  all  through  that,  ma’am,   ❜   she  said,  maybe  a  moment  off  beat.  paige  struggled  to  summon  up  a  reassuring  smile,  her  eyes  still  holding  echoes  of  her  thoughts  before  the  admiral  entered  the  med  bay.  paige  looked  down,  bitting  her  lip.  she  had  to  pull  it  together.  there’d  be  time  for  it  later,  she  had  to  believe  that.  for  now,  there  was  work  to  be  done  (  *  you  should  take  it  easy,  paige,  with  an  injury  like  that              falling  in  microgravity  wasn’t  all  it  was  cracked  up  to  be,  it  seemed  ).    ❛   but  i’m  fine.  honestly  i  am.  i’m  good  to  get  back  to  it,  as  they  say.   ❜
