my family’s daal recipe (punjabi malaysian)
daal (lentil curry) is a fundamental/staple food across south asia as it is cheap to make, packed with protein, flavourful, and completely vegetarian. it can also be made vegan by substituting ghee (clarified butter) with coconut oil if desired. there are as many ways to make daal as there are lentil varieties that can be cooked on their own or combined, but this is the blend i grew up eating and the one i like best. this daal is meant to have a thick and hearty texture.
daal can be served with fresh basmati rice or any kind of south asian flatbread of your choice (chapati/roti is most common, but it is really good with aloo or paneer stuffed prantha too.) my favourite way to eat it is with basmati rice and a couple of fried eggs on top :)

anyone wanna make this with me?
@bookshelfdreams I'm so tempted... It would be an autumn project for me though. Do you have any ideas for colour combinations you'd like to do?
I would love to make this with one of these diamond twills, they are so beautiful
but the pattern calls for 2-3m and that's gonna be. hm. expensive as fuck.
As an alternative, I found this boiled wool in a grey-green colour that I think is pretty enough and would go with the rest of my wardrobe quite nicely.
I think I'd line this with a cotton flannel since it wouldn't be a winter garment anyway, and using another wool would be too heavy (and again, expensive). For colour, im thinking a dramatic contrast, maybe something like this?
The burgundy might be a bit too much, I think I'd prefer the navy. But that's my vision, the broad strokes, as it currently stands.
Oh boy the fabrics are so pretty. The diamond twill is of course incredible (especially the second one Oo), but I think combining the grey-green with the navy would look so good!
I just checked out the fabric website and omg I'm in love with this yellow one:
I was thinking of making it to wear to a Mittelaltermarkt or something like that... Just for that it's too expensive though. Hm. Maybe I'll try to make the pattern with a fabric I have in my stash and see how it drapes.
I fully intend to wear this day-to-day :D
I will just have to continue to longingly state at the diamond twill..... sigh.
Anyway, I found this blog post by someone who added pockets to the pattern and (most importantly!) made it printable! I haven't looked at it too closely yet, so idk how well it works. I'm just gonna leave this here for future reference :D

Stitching on black Aida can be annoying sometimes, but the result is striking enough to be worth it. My own design.
More blackwork shading, this time inverted. Cross-stitched candle casting a blackwork glow. My own design.
The cat quilt is complete!
This cat quilt is for my niece’s birthday. She’s two and she loves cats (she calls them “meow meows”)
Here’s the pattern for the cat quilt! It’s free and it’s awesome
For anyone finding me through this cat quilt, here’s the pattern! It’s free, pretty easy to make, and all I changed from the pattern was that I made it smaller (4x4 instead of 5x6). I used 1/4 yard or a fat quarter for each cat, and I had leftovers (but not enough leftovers to make another block of any one color)
It’s been a while, so here! Have the link to the free cat quilt pattern!
I’ve been seeing a lot of anti-Nazi ones, which is great, but I felt like we needed one to show our support for the Jewish community.
