I am so tired of short-attention-span, trim-the-fat culture. All writing advice these days is for how to write like Chuck Palahniuk. "Cut 'think', cut 'feel', cut 'wonder' - only action, only pushing forward, show and move and move and move." What if I could emulate this style, and still don't want to? What if I want to write like Henry James, with three paragraphs of introspective musings between each dialogue line? The music advice is, "make it shortform, make it Tik-Tok compatible, make it punchy, hit the refrain as soon as possible." What if I want that 10-minute prog rock piece? What if I want that symphony? What if I want it slow and luxurious and lazy? Movies. Series. Poetry. Bodies. Everything is "trimmed trimmed trimmed trimmed, stripped bare, you have three seconds to win me over, make it airport chic." I don't want to win you over, then, I guess. I want the fat left it. I want the pleasure and the indolence and the indulgence. Fuck this art-advice that's always "your art needs Ozempic."

Suddenly thinking of 1989’s The Little Mermaid and you know what, give Eric some props here because he had the weirdest fucking hour of his life—

Wakes up from hypnosis where he was about to marry a woman he’s never seen before with his mystery girl’s voice, the instant he wakes up then the cute girl he’s actually fallen in love with now has that voice. Then she drops to the floor and has a fish tail, and then the first girl is suddenly cackling “too late!” and bursting out of her skin. So it turns out she’s actually an octopus woman who drags herself over to the real mystery girl - who’s a mermaid?! They’re real?! - and taking her back into the ocean. And Eric has no idea what’s going on here but okay, one of these women is clearly evil and he needs to go after his mystery girl.

And all of this happens/he realizes what he has to do within like, a single minute.

Prior to this he was just living out a sweet romance after having a Meet Cute with a shipwrecked girl, but okay, guess he’s involved in whatever the fuck this is. Acting first, questioning later.

And this is all before the kaiju attacks.

u guys hear about this discord autoban wave thats getting people for posting any images that look like a grid? im hearing people are getting banned for posting screenshots of folders, brick walls, etc. sounds like a new dataset had some bad hashes for the “ban anyone who posts child porn” detection system and its getting tons of incorrect hits

Discord is probably still dependent on PDNA (a valuable industry standard LLM tool) for its “first pass”look at newly uploaded content. When I worked there, it was the daily job of one person (me btw just me it was only me) to look through what PDNA flagged as potentially CSAM, and to then tell it yes/no; if I said “yes” the account that uploaded it would be immediately locked, and the image or video reported to the authorities. PDNA is an image hash matching system, which essentially means it views media in a grid pattern and looks for things it recognizes within the sections of that grid. As such, it was very common to see innocent grid patterns, screenshots of video game inventories, and checkerboard style images to show up in the matching. Now, an image just showing up in the matching in no way means (meant?) that it was CSAM, or suspected to be CSAM, just that something in the grid triggered PDNA’s hash match. My job, then, was to confirm if it was correct.

So what I suspect is happening now is one of two options:

-They have an AI agent doing the “yes/no” decision making (a very bad idea,) or, worse:

-They are skipping the confirmation stage and simply auto banning anyone who uploads anything that PDNA flags.

Again, PDNA is not a decision-making system. It just makes matches to a huge database of known CSAM, and creates a page (or 10) of recently uploaded Discord media that it thinks may match the content it knows about. It is not expected to be 100% accurate, and never could be. I highly suspect that Discord is trying to just automate this process by eliminating any step between “PDNA flagged this” and “it’s definitely CSAM.” Disappointing, but not shocking, frankly. I’d advise anyone who’s caught in this ban to immediately appeal.

I commented on Jenny Nicholson's patreon video, replying to someone else about a different topic, and offhandedly mentioned that she used my content, and that I was a little startled because I hadn't been asked at all. (The tone was like, that merch post she used was mine! I was surprised to see it because I didn't get asked)

She blocked me and canceled my patreon subscription to her. I've been a patron for years.

I've always given her the benefit of the doubt with her Starcruiser shit and have been like "eh I still like most of her content despite us disagreeing on this thing"

I also mentioned her fans having harassed me in the past, something she has literally never addressed or taken any accountability for. Her fans have harassed actual cast members who worked on the Starcruiser and have constantly bothered the community at large.

So maybe that was what did it. She doesn't want my money because I'm not a weird parasocial freak obsessed with her and acting like she can do no wrong.

Her bills are basically paid by monthly donations for creating Borderline Nothing, I should've known she could never have been an actually good person.

She hasn't seemed to block me on twitter or anything so it HAD to have solely been the patreon comment!

Really interesting stuff and nobody will give half a shit and creators like her will continue making 10k a month by just looking at other peoples' content I guess.

The unsurprising resolution to this situation is that Patreon is not going to do a damn thing. I got an email saying "oh we're sorry! that must've been very upsetting to see someone use your content without permission! Creators can block you for any reason for their safety and we cannot do anything about it ♥"

And since I have no reach on the internet nobody will ever give a shit and giant creators will continue to take advantage of people and steal their content and photos just to put them in a video to be like "HAHA aren't these people fucking SAD?"

Imagine if Jenny Nicholson could've taken 5 minutes out of her jobless life to send me a single fucking DM asking if she can use a personal photo of my belongings. But no, she's too busy taking vacations to a dozen European theme parks while living in a mansion in LA that she pretends is an apartment.
