This does seem to sum up their competitive relationship, doesn't it?
SO... What's Happening?
...and by that I mean, wow it's been a while. Been wrapped up in important things like saving the world, inventing, keeping my spouse happy, not drinking myself to death and drowning my sorrows. You know, adult stuff.
Anyone home?

A Long Time Coming
"You?" Tony tried, attempting to diffuse the situation. “No? Not funny? Not today?" He sighed. “I don’t care. You make good food and I’m not a picky eater, you know that." He paused, weighing his words before he realized he didn’t have to because this was his husband.
"And the anxiety pills are because I’ve been having panic attacks. About, you know. The Battle of New York. And what happened with the Mandarin." He paused and his voice dropped as well as his eyes. He stared at his hands, unconsciously wringing them together. “I don’t know what happened to me. One minute I’m fine the next my heart is going at a crazy rate, my chest is tight, I’m lightheaded and I’m - panicking. And I can’t stop. And everything that’s happened in the past year hits me all at once and I can’t function, Steve." He finally looks up, feeling the hysteria take over. “I can’t function like a normal person and I can’t help it. I’m terrified even though it was in the past. In Malibu, I wasn’t sleeping for days at a time, because I had nightmares and I didn’t want to take sleeping pills. Pepper didn’t want me taking them either. Addiction is a problem for me, it seems."
He takes a deep breath, trying to calm down. His eyes squeeze shut. “I think I cracked something that I don’t know how to fix."
Steve had lifted an eyebrow at Tony’s joke. “Not today."
Steve listened to Tony and felt rather guilty that he had acted so rashly. True, it was out of concern for his husband, but even the supersoldier could take his emotions too far.
"Tony." Steve began once Tony had stopped speaking. “You are going to be okay. You are safe. You are here, with me. You are here with your Steve. Your husband. Everything is all right."
Steve hugged Tony close and positioned Tony so he could hear the heartbeat pulsing under the supersoldier’s chest. “Shhh, shh. There is no need to panic. But if you need to, I will be right here. Nowhere else. Just right here. Holding you. Listening to you. I’m sorry that I jumped so rashly in my response. You know you can cry, you can yell, you can be held around me. I will stay here with you as long as you need me to."
Steve thought for a moment, feeling his chest cave in slightly at the feelings of sadness for Tony. “As for the pills, we will figure something out, love. Don’t stress yourself out over this. Please. If you feel like something is broken, I will not judge you. I will do my best to be here and support you as best as I can, and you know my word is good. I love you, Tony, and whether it is in sickness or in health, we’re staying together. Forever. No matter what."
Lunch would have to wait. But it was going to be leftover potato salad, grilled chicken, and a tall glass of milk mixed with a third of Half and Half cream. The calcium would help significantly. And afterwards, not just a shower, but a relaxing bath. Lavender bubbles were in order to help relax stressed muscles and induce sleepiness. Tony needed pampering, in Steve’s opinion, and as little stress as possible. But for now…
"I’m right here, sweetheart. Whatever you need me to do, I’m here for you."
Tony held on for a moment, focusing on nothing but his breathing and the sound of Steve's heart beat. He let the other man's words wash over him, the tone and inflection soothing and grounding. He let himself calm, not enough that he felt better completely, but enough that he could at least think again, form coherent words again.
In all honesty, it was a big step in the right direction for him.
"Wow. OK. Let's just... pretend that didn't happen since it's been happening far too much for my taste." He grimaced and laughed, the sound shaky and fragile, no matter how much he tried to cover it up. "Whoa. Harley would have gotten a kick out of this, the big, brave super soldier coming to the poor genius' rescue." Tony swallowed hard and closed his eyes again. "Though I must admit, the position is rather comfortable. You've been working out. Nice abs, husband of mine."
A Long Time Coming
"Um…" Tony looked away and cleared his throat. “I may have uh… not?" He back tracked. “But hey! No reason to get your boxers in a twist sunshine. Besides the fact that several of my doctors want to put me on anxiety pills, I’ve almost died several times and um, well Pepper’s almost died several times, and Rhodey…" He trailed off. “Well." Tony cleared his throat. “This isn’t sounding good."
He squirmed in his seat like a kid caught cheating in class. He perked up though.
"Oh! Wait! Harley. Yeah, this little shit genius. He’s pretty cool. I got him into some scrapes, but you can ask JARVIS, when I was using him out of the Malibu house, they bonded. Ish?" Tony turned to him with a smile on his face, because yeah. Harley was freaking awesome. “He’s like eleven, and he’s great for snot-nosed brat. We gotta visit him sometime. He’d freak if he saw you."
Steve’s eyes darkened and his brow furrowed as he absorbed Tony’s words. Not sounding good, indeed! Anxiety pills? Almost dying? Skipping meals? Almost dying? What even were anxiety pills, anyway? And what did Tony mean, ALMOST DYING?!
"I’m force-feeding you. And chasing you into the shower. I don’t care if I have to wash you myself, mister, you’re in trouble." Steve stated in a very stern, no-nonsense voice. “Whatever your anxiety is, we’ll take care of it later. Right now you need care and I’m going to give it to you."
Steve shifted positions so that he was the one cradling Tony and holding him close. “Harley sounds like a great kid. I’d love to meet him one day. I’m glad you made a friend."
Now Steve had to think about what he was going to do for meals. Knowing Tony and his eating habits, he’d be needing vitamins and other essential nutrients in a steady diet over the next few weeks. Steve made a note to pick some up as soon as possible and mulled over their lunch options. Something with protein, at least, and calcium to go with it.
"Don’t argue with me, you need to be fed. What would you like to eat?"
"You?" Tony tried, attempting to diffuse the situation. "No? Not funny? Not today?" He sighed. "I don't care. You make good food and I'm not a picky eater, you know that." He paused, weighing his words before he realized he didn't have to because this was his husband.

He takes a deep breath, trying to calm down. His eyes squeeze shut. "I think I cracked something that I don't know how to fix."
A Long Time Coming
Tony took a deep breath and tangled his fingers in Steve’s soft hair. He bent over in half to burying his face in Steve’s hair and breathe him in for a moment, that familiar scent of sweat and cinnamon from the baking.
He’d missed him with a bone-deep ache, a heart-wrenching yearning. He’d longed for not only his body but his company as well. He had wanted to listen to Steve’s voice every day, have him around at all the long meetings, have him be there fighting by his side when he’d needed back up he could count on but none of it had been possible. The Mandarin clean up had been taxing and he just wanted to be where he was at this moment months ago.
Alas, at least he was here now.
"Good, cos I missed your fine ass too," he mumbled then chuckled. “Mmm, how are you? What’d I miss? Let me just talk to you, yeah?"
Steve sighed happily, reaching up and entwining his fingers between Tony’s as his husband stroked Steve’s hair. “I’ve been well. A few skirmishes here and there, a battle over yonder, and it’s been pretty lonely since most of the team has gone off to do whatever it is that they need to do. It’s just been Ozzie, Nirvana, and JARVIS here with me. I can tell you it’s been mighty lonely to sleep in that big bed of ours all by myself."
Sure, Ozzie and Nirvana had made themselves more than welcome on the furniture at night while Tony had been away, but it just wasn’t anywhere near the same. Steve enjoyed waking up to Tony’s spicy, earthy scent and loved to watch his eyelids twitching and following everything in his dreams. Steve liked watching the arc reactor pulsate with light upon every breath Tony drew in.
And all the same, there was comfort in Steve waking up and finding Tony in the lab. It meant he couldn’t watch Tony sleep, but it meant he could still bring Tony coffee and breakfast before going along with his own activities. It truly was the comfort of having his husband there and close by that reminded Steve of the better lives the two of them had now.
"So now that you’re home, what would you like to do? I can make us some lunch, or we can… Well, I don’t know. But I do know that all I need if to be near you right now." Steve stated, lifting his blue eyes up and catching Tony’s dark ones. “Got any ideas?"
"Well, obviously I’ve got ideas," Tony said suggestively. He threw a little smiles Steve’s way, but it softened when he got a good look at the man. They really had missed each other and coming back to him felt like coming home.
Tony leaned forward and captured Steve’s lips with his softly. The kiss was gentle, so achingly gentle which was odd for Tony, but for once he didn’t want to be rushed. He’d been rushed for too long now, rushed into saving people, rushed into running, rushed into cleaning up the messes that seemed to follow him. He wanted to take his time for once. So he kissed slowly.
"There’s a few things I want to talk to you about, a few people I met along the way that I’d love to introduce you to. But for now, this is good. I mean, it’s you of course it’s good, but you know what I mean."
Steve tasted Tony’s lips as they kissed and purred in delight. It was a good, delicious, slow kiss. When they parted, there was a sweet sense of satisfaction and belonging. Steve had figured Tony would like to do a few things- but as they were married, that was okay.
For now, though, just being this close, penetrating each other’s proximities like this, was wonderful.
"I’d love to listen about it all." Steve replied. “It’s been so long since I even heard your voice. Without interference from phones and all. Please tell me all about it."
As he spoke, Steve found himself nudging Ozzie aside and taking her place on the chair next to Tony, nuzzling into his neck and clinging happily to Tony’s body. “And please tell me you’ve been taking care of yourself. If you’ve been skipping meals I WILL force-feed you and chase you into the shower."
"Um..." Tony looked away and cleared his throat. "I may have uh... not?" He back tracked. "But hey! No reason to get your boxers in a twist sunshine. A Long Time Coming
Tony took a deep breath and surveyed the Stark Industries New York Tower. It had been a long time since he was there, having to take care of business in Malibu after the whole Mandarin scare. He was tired, but he was happy to be home.
"Now, to find the husband," he muttered to himself, heading to the living quarters floor of the Tower. He wasn’t sure where Steve was and he hadn’t told the man of his arrival previously because he wanted it to be a surprise. He could only hope he found Steve before Steve heard he was back and found him.
Steve was relaxing on the couch lazily petting Ozzie with one hand and reading a magazine with the other. The pup had grown quite a bit, and Nirvana was off doing her kitty thing. Tony had been off on business- a very, very long business trip. Steve found himself missing Tony more and more by the second, but he knew other duties called.
It was much the same for Steve himself. Though really, it couldn’t be helped that the superhero would find himself glancing up from his magazine and looking out one of the many vast windows in hopes of seeing a certain iron-clad man. It was during one of these glances that Steve noticed Ozzie lifting her head and perking her ears.
"What is it, girl?" Steve asked, petting the soft fur on the canine’s head. “Is it Nirvana?"
Little did the beloved Captain of the Americas know what- or, should I say, who- was coming home at last.
Tony’s first guess was the bedroom (which was wrong) and then he checked the kitchen (also wrong, damn-it). He finally poked his head into the spacious living room that he and Steve had in their shared living quarters and caught sight of a tuft of blond hair on the couch. He pulled back, but not quick enough for Ozzie to miss him, which was okay. He didn’t think the dog would give him away. Not much.
Tony thought for a moment how he was going to do this. Would he just waltz in like he would any other person? Would he make a big deal out of it? This was Steve, he reminded himself. Steve didn’t like big charades. He took a deep breath and decided to approach the way he approached everything.
He was going to wing it.
Tony walked into the room, leaving the suitcase he carried around for show at the doorway. He tossed himself onto the recliner across from Steve, loosened his tie then looked up and gave his husband a crooked smile.
"Miss me?"
Steve had been so focused on Ozzie and looking out the window that he was more than surprised when Tory appeared as only a Tony would. Steve’s jaw dropped slightly as his eyes drank in his husband; a sight that was very much so more than welcome.
"You’re home. You’re home! Welcome home! Y-yes, I missed you!" Steve stammered as Ozzie jumped up off the couch and into Tony’s chair. Steve stood up and put his magazine down, still a bit shocked and happy to see Tony all the same. “Are you hungry? When did you get back? I made some apple pie yesterday if you want that. Or maybe you’re tired? The bed’s freshly made if you are. And the animals are taken care of, too, and oh gosh I just…"
Steve knelt down and put his head in Tony’s lap. “I missed you."
Tony took a deep breath and tangled his fingers in Steve's soft hair. He bent over in half to burying his face in Steve's hair and breathe him in for a moment, that familiar scent of sweat and cinnamon from the baking.

"It is- it is not just destined, Steve Rogers. It will reach through the decades, through entire universes if it has to. It will scour the galaxies without rest until the two of you are standing next to each other. Migardians- Migardians call them soulmates, I believe."
