RIP by Tomsk
I think people often confuse universal compassion for universal tolerance.
And others will often evoke this misunderstanding when you tell them what they’re doing is wrong, or worse, when defending yourself from them.
They will say “but you are Buddhist/Christian/Pagan/etc! You are supposed to be tolerant. Your religion commands it!” They believe that universal compassion means submission to others. And that if you oppose them for any reason, that it is done with malice and hate in your heart.
Universal compassion is unconditional love for all living things. We love our children unconditionally, but there do come times when we must tell them “no”. We do not do this because we hate them, but because we love them. Because allowing them to continue with their bad behavior will ultimately hurt them. Hurt us. Hurt others.
To tolerate is to resign your compassion 🍃
Imma stop you right there, because
A) adults are not kids
B) they’re not YOUR goddamn kids in the first place
You get to have all opinions you want but 0 say in how others live their lives unless they’re direct immediate threat to yours. Worry about trash in your own backyard first.
Everything you do either actively or passively affects the world around you. All people and all things. Your actions and behaviors have consequences that exist outside your own narrow perception of the world.
We are all connected in this way and this is why we should not apply our compassion selectively. This is why it behooves us to treat all people as if they were our sisters and brothers, to love them and care about the harm they bring themselves, and to the world around them.
You fuck off from me, I’ll fuck off from you, it’s as easy as that.
Some people think you won’t go to heaven if you don’t mutilate baby genitals, I’m not about to listen to their truth.
Someltimes the most compassionate thing you can do, op, is to learn when to leave well enough alone.
Apathy is the opposite of compassion.
my friend, I’ve had someone use my grandmother’s death to preach about people going to hell, your idea of “compassion” can wind up being insanely cruel to others sometimes without even realizing.
I’m not a Christian and I wouldn’t preach about hell at what I presume was a funeral. I’m sorry for your loss, sincerely. But you are misplacing your anger from that experience onto me.
Compassion is not doing what feels good to others, compassion is doing what is right for others. From a doctor realigning a broken bone, to telling a loved one you will no longer enable them. We do these things because we love them, because we feel compassionate. And sometimes it hurts.
