there’s something so freeing about science. understanding yourself by understanding the universe and understanding the universe by understanding yourself. 

and at the same time understanding nothing about yourself and nothing about the universe because understanding is a concept that waxes and wanes as fast as you forget the formulas you just learned.

 staring at your hand and the cells and atoms and protons and neutrons and electrons and quarks and photons and empty space. your hand is a part of you and you are a part of the world. reality as an extension of yourself. yourself as an extension of reality.  

we can categorize the study of existence itself into a million words and a million branches and keep learning and always know there will be more to keep learning beyond the span of any human lifetime because the universe is expanding and so is our understanding. 

the second law of thermodynamics states that the directions of natural processes such as the increase of entropy in an isolated system are irreversible and flow in one direction and as our understanding increases in one direction there is no finite point of total understanding so we are endlessly laboring to comprehend the incomprehensible even as we force it into comprehension. 

knowledge as rebellion. learning as a violent push against the restrictions of time and the human lifespan. i will cram every little fact about the universe into my brain as i can and one day i will die and i will die knowing i loved every particle i ever came into contact with because i am the universe and the universe is me

and then it’s bestfriend!daichi who is helping you pack up your bags and make sure you have everything. even driving you to shops to get everything you don’t have. he keeps trying to tell you how he feels but nothing comes of it.

bestfriend!daichi who sees you going off to college with all your friends, everyone going their separate ways, but swearing to stay in touch. meanwhile he’s staying in town and becoming a firefighter.

bestfriend!daichi who remains your best friend, even when your miles upon miles apart. he still calls all the time and drives out to see you and you do the same. but slowly those calls and those visits become fewer and fewer.

bestfriend!daichi who rambles ON and ON about you - to you - and about how god awful your boyfriend is, and look at that. he’s just confessed that he’s loved you since highschool. after years, he finally has the words. words he didn’t even think about. suddenly he’s completely sober again.

bestfriend!daichi who stops in his tracks and glances at you. mouth agape, eyes wide. he just stares for a second before watching you pull out your phone and type something out quickly before looking back at him.

bestfriend!daichi who tentatively watched you reach out. almost the second you hand touches his face he does the same and pulls you so near him that you can feel his breath across your face. and he hesitates once again. but this time he says something. “can i?”

bestfriend!daichi who sees the almost unnoticeable nod and presses his lips to yours. finally kissing you. he holds your face in his hands and is as near to you as he can be from his spot next to you at the bar. and he pulls back and laughs breathlessly.

bestfriend!daichi that becomes more than your best friend after that night. coming up on every anniversary and as much as he can between them. he always has flowers or chocolates or plushes or something to give you, some sweet, something loving.

loving bakugo katsuki is the august heat before fall comes and chills your bones. it’s that warm feeling when it cools down at night and you can finally curl up beneath your duvet.

it’s seeing the freckles line his eyelids and his nose and how they become more visible in the summer.

loving katsuki is burning cheeks from hitting frost, and it’s warm drinks in the early morning dew.

loving him is bitter coffee warming up your hands in late december afternoons. it’s a night curled up together at the drive in, trying not to fall asleep half way through the second movie.

loving katsuki is warm and it’s slow. it takes a lot of patience. he will push you away and act like you aren’t that big a deal. it isn’t easy either, he is a headache sometimes. he’s scared of affection and he isn’t sure how to approach his fear of losing you. and he is clueless. he hasn’t ever been good at differentiating his feelings. when he did finally let you in, it took him months to figure out that he cared for you differently then he cared for for others. when he did piece it together, it took him a while to figure out what to do with it.

he started being gentler, softer almost. he didn’t yell at you as much, certainly not out of anger at least. and he lost the edge to his words, letting them not be as sharp. he started showing more, letting himself be seen when he isn’t being dynamite. he cooked and hummed and lounged with less guard.

and eventually, he held and he told. he listened most of all. he grew to bask in your warmth and took time to escape into your world. slowly, he loved.
