I have some advice to writers in fandom: if you start to feel like fandom is making you dislike your own writing, get the hell out. Do not wait, do not pull halfway out, fucking go. Fandoms are vicious and there are people out there who make themselves feel better by tearing others down. Waiting for likes teaches you to externalize your sense of self-worth. Reblogs and follower counts become unspoken competitions.

Leave with your sense of self-worth intact. Loving your writing is worth more than anything you could possibly get out of fandom, I promise you.

Yes! There's moths! Hard to see unless you pause, here's the screenshot:

Not sure what it means. We do know that the Hive have been on the Moon for a long time and there's Hive moths on the Moon. So it's not entirely out of place, but it's curious that they animated the moths to Inaaks stabbing the body of Nezarec.

Some other details I noticed: Mithrax inherited his mother's helmet along with the relic!

Interesting. The relics were scattered "across the galaxy," not just the Solar system. That means there are probably more than those we are collecting this season.

On a related note, concept art for Delicate Tomb exotic is out and I'm very sad that the in-game version doesn't have the black mist on it. The art however shows what's inside the magazine that you can't see in the game:

I also love the geometric black structure inside the fusion that's very much like the Pyramid stuff we see around Rhulk and the Witness:

But either way this concept and story pretty much confirms entirely that Delicate Tomb is also holding the relic and that the lore tab on the weapon is Nezarec talking.

So, if you ever see fan authors saying that no one comments on finished works after the first week, this is what they mean:

A person can only leave kudos one time per fic (two times if they’re sneaky/dedicated, but let’s face it, most people aren’t THAT invested) so that line represents individual readers.  You can see how that increases steadily over time, as more and more people discover the work.

In theory, if a certain percentage of people who read a fic are likely to leave a comment, that line should increase at a steady rate to match the kudos line. Instead, it practically plateaus after the first week or so.

So no, fan authors are not complaining when they say that they almost never get comments on older works - they’re simply telling the truth.

A few notes on data collection: All works were for a single, fairly small (in the English language) fandom (less than 1,000 English-language works). Data was collected across 12 works total for a single author. Data is for 100 days following the posting of the completed works.  For one-shots, this is from the date of posting.  For multi-chapter works, it is from the date the last chapter is posted.

If you have similar data to share - especially for a larger fandom - I’d love to see it!

I think part of it is the odd notion that commenting on a years-old fic has some weirdness attached to it. Similar to accidentaly liking someone’s old photo on instagram. And it’s ridiculous, especially on a site like Ao3 which is an archive! I love when people interact with my older works because yes they’re still in my heart in spite of the years that’ve passed, I’m still proud of them! We’re all pretending to be so cool and disconnected and that we only like what shows up on our dash or the main tag front page. No, reading and kudos'ing one author’s every work is not “creepy”, it’s amazing because HOLY SHIT imagine someone genuinely enjoys all that you’ve written. By all means do leave comments under 2018 fics. 2014 fics. They’re not dead and dry only because they’re old. If someone told me they read and liked a story I posted seven years ago I’d start crying tears of joy and enthusiastically shaking their hand.
