NOW PLAYING… ‘all my ghosts’ LIZZY MCALPINE
the soft hum of the buzzing lights in the tiny gas station was the only thing filling the ambiance in the air. daniela walked with her hands in her coat, her eyes settling on the last bag of trollis hanging on the shelf.
“thank god.” she said under her breath.
you happened to peak over, grabbing a twix bar.
“chocolates are better you know?” you said to her, looking over at her, daniela’s gaze meeting yours.
“yeah? how so?”
“they’re more.. chocolatey.” your words coming out in a soft hum, a smile appearing on daniela’s face.
don’t. run.
her eyes flinched slightly, feeling an unsettling presence around her. she turned around, to see jonah behind her, a more foggy version of him, as a ghost.
“you know better, daniela.” jonah spoke, leaning on the shelf.
she shook it off, rubbing her eyes, seeing as he was gone. she whipped her head, you were distracted, picking out a different candy. daniela took that as her option to get the hell out of the store.
she stumbled backwards, placing the candy there on the shelf, she rushed out the store.
“i- i said to quit following me already.” daniela spoke, fumbling inside her coat pocket for her keys. she unlocked her car, settling inside, as she ran her hands over her face.
“you always do this, jonah. get the hell out of my head.” she spoke to herself, mumbling under her breath.
the sound of her car engine was loud enough to make you snap out of a trance or twix or kitkat, you looked over to the unknown woman, to only see she was gone.
“how long was i trying to decide..” you mumbled under your breath.
“i didn’t even get her name.”
you huffed, grabbing the twix, and the trollis she had left.

the next time you guys ran into each other was in the cereal aisle, same store, different area. how sweet!
“you disappeared on me, like as if you were a ghost. also get frosted flakes theyre so good.” you said, speaking, leaning against the shelf slightly.
“ironic, hm?” she mumbled, “you wouldn’t know.”
“i would like to know.” you fired back.
“maybe it’s for the better you don’t.” she blurted, looking up at you.
“just give me a chance.” you pleaded, you reached into your pocket, taking the two day old trollis, you grabbed a marker from a nearby shelf. you wrote your number down on it.
“just text me, i’ll take you on a date, all expenses paid by me.”
don’t.
“don’t do it, dani.” jonah said as he swarmed around, going next to you.
“so? just text me, okay?” you said leaving the store quietly.
“why do you never let me try and date, i broke things off, i should be haunting you.”
“because dani, we both know you’re not over me.”
“i am.” she snapped, her tone getting louder. before realizing she looked probably insane talking to herself, she looked around seeing as nobody was even bothered by her.
“why her even? because she’s nice?” jonah complained, swooshed around the shelves.
“because she’s different, she trying to make it seem like she cares unlike you did.”
“yeah cause she’s a girl.” jonah laughed.
“shut up. it’s not cause she’s a girl, she tries.” daniela said, as she looked over to see, he was gone, once again.
“fuck, i’m crazy.” she said grabbing a random cereal box, and going to the check out. she stood there dumbfounded, scanning the frosted flakes, hell she doesn’t even like frosted flakes. she just remembered you saying that you liked them.
daniela looked down at the gummy worms in her hand, and shoved them into the bag.

after a while she gained confidence enough to text you and set up a plan to meet, and well she decided on going to the nearest beach.
she wore a bikini top, that covered just enough to seem appropriate for a first ‘date’, with some jeans shorts, and sandals.
you wore a loose grey shirt, with jean shorts, and ur birkins, matching daniela slightly. walking along the shore line, she looked over to you, seeing as you were already looking at her.
“this is nice.” she hummed softly, moving closer to you.
“yeah it’s peaceful.” you smiled at her, nudging her playfully, a small smile appearing on both your faces.
the sky had gone from a fury of pink and blue and purple color to a darker blue signifying the coming of the night. you both walked alongside each other getting to know each other, sandals in hand, the now cold sand beneath their feet.
“you like this place? like the whole beach?” you asked, looking ahead of you.
“the beach is kind of my thing, i come here when i need to clear my head, have fun with my friends, or just in my free time really.”
you smiled to yourself, as you could feel yourself purposely brush her hand. and she knew it, dani knew what you trying to do.
yet she didn’t try and pull away, she didn’t feel the need to. she felt safe with you and complete again.
“you’re not tense like you were in at the bodega.” you spoke to her.
“maybe it’s the ocean.” lie. jonah wasn’t even trying to bother her, that’s why she seemed lighter.
“or maybe it’s you.” you spoke to her, finally intertwining your fingers with hers together.
but if it was her, it meant, she would self sabotage herself.
and that’s exactly what happened.
when it got colder and the waves began to swoosh harder onto the sand, you both had decided to just go cruise around til then.
the second you shut her door, jonah had appeared in the back seat.
“you enjoying her so far? she’ll find out about me eventually.” he said smug, manspreading.
“shut up, leave.” she said, looking at you throw the rear view mirror, seeing you were coming back.
you opened your door, an settled in.
“where would you like to go to first?” you asked a soft smile, placing your hand on the gear shift, driving off.
“anywheres fine.” she said in a low hum. her energy shifting.
a long quiet moment happened.
“you’re distant now. you’re very hard to read.” you said, hand gripping the steering wheel, keeping your eyes on the road.
“i’m not.” dani fought softly,
“she’s figuring it out.” jonah spoke.
“daniela,” you spoke a soft tone in your words.
“you don’t know me.”
“i want to.” you said immediately after she spoke, as if you knew what she was going to say.
“she’ll get tired eventually.” jonah spoke, fixing his fitted cap.
“it’s a waste of time, you’ll leave.” daniela spoke a lump in her throat growing.
“that’s not for you to decide but me. you haven’t given me a chance long enough. i won’t leave, i’m still here.”
daniela looked over at you, and suddenly it went quiet, everyone went quiet. and in that moment, she decided to not listen to her ghosts, but to you.
“i’m here, daniela.”
