PRIDE PORTRAITS AAAAAAAAAHHHH
Wacom recently asked me to talk about why I make queer comics, and given there are multiple bills right now floating around in congress that are effectively "we will kill your livelihood if we get a sniff of queer" I had some pretty strong, simply feelings to relay.
You can read the interview here, you can buy my graphic novel featuring a gay vampire here, and you can call your congressmen about rejecting HR 2616, HR 8705, HR 7661 using 5calls.org (they don't have these specific bills listed as things to call about, but luckily you can talk about whatever you want on the phone)
Because of ArtFight's recent rule clarification, I've seen discussion on whether tracing your own photos is the same as references them. This is, in my opinion, a matter of semantics. Tracing your own photos IS a method of using them as reference. It is perfectly normal and doesn't hurt anyone. When it comes to self made resources (photos, sculpture, maquettes, 3D sculpts, etc) and resources made explicitly for artists to use (stock photos with appropriate permission, 3D models in CSP, etc), tracing can be ONE step of using them as a reference. It isn't a "crutch", it isn't cheating.
You can also put the photo up next to what you're drawing, and draw from sight. Or trace the photo a few times, then draw it separately. These all have value for different situations for learning, speed, and accuracy, and I recommend trying them ALL.
Regardless of what ArtFight decides, I want other artists to not be afraid of using this type of reference material in this way. It's very normal in both professional and hobby circles, it isn't harmful, and it doesn't make you a lesser artist. Hope this hasn't ruffled any feathers, keep drawing! <3
Not to mention that this is a rule that ArtFight, realistically, cannot enforce. If they do not have the source images (3d model poses or self-made photos) they just cannot prove if the sketch used anything as a base if you have correctly incorporated it into the artwork. Unless you have a stuck-up snitch of a friend who tells on you and leaks dms, they would literally never know.
The rule should have been against line-for-line tracing and tracing of any kind from someone else's artwork (and maybe someone else's photo references). This IS a dishonest practice and a malicious use of tracing.
This thing looks like the family friendly version of that one boss made entirely out of shit from Conker's Bad Fur Day I swear to god.
